It was always going to be touch and go that they’d get regulatory approval in time, but the complete system meltdown a few Saturdays ago wouldn’t have done their efforts any favours.
Never understood why the Upfield line has never been linked to the Craigieburn line at Roxburgh Park.
True, linking the Upfield line with the Craigieburn line at Roxburgh Park also means in the long term, Upfield line trains can travel as far north as Wallan (when the section between Wallan and Craigieburn is electrified). More frequencies on the Upfield line will not only reduce overcrowding on the Craigieburn line, but also take some passengers from tram route 19 (North Coburg to Flinders Street Station), which basically runs parallel with the railway from North Coburg to Brunswick. This in turn could mean frequency reduction for route 19 services, but should increase service reliability and help ease congestion on Sydney Road.
It used to be, passenger service was withdrawn in the 50s though freight traffic continued for some decades after.
I rode the new Yanchep Rail Extension out west on Saturday and gee it’s not much.
I expected being ground level with the bush which would be a great ride through whilst the areas it runs through are inhabited, but what i got was a trench that is semi underground or next to a sound-proofing wall.
the yanchep station is quite far out of the exisiting townsite, I know the idea is for the new centre of town to be around the station but it is barren with the exception of sand.
the buses on a saturday reflect a regional town and the routes are something that will hopefully be improved as time goes forward.
Brisbane is ranked as Australia’s most expensive city for public transport, with an average weekly cost of $59.67. The national capital city average is $39.35 per week, and every capital city except Canberra, Darwin, and Hobart rank significantly higher than average.
that’s journalism for you
Now we have 50c public transport fares for the next 6 months
I was over in Perth on holidays and had seen the extension advertised on billboards with a picture of Yanchep Lagoon which peaked my interest. Turned out it was opening the weekend before we left, so went for a trip out there on the 1st Monday of service. Was a little disappointed about the lack of view from the train itself.
While it was a bit difficult to nail down the bus times beforehand, I had faith and it worked out well. We got straight off the train on to a bus to Two Rocks and had a look around there, having a rather nice brunch at Neptune’s Cafe. There were quite a few senior citizens who had the same idea which was good to see. The weather that day was glorious for a winters day too which was a bonus. From Two Rocks we got the bus back towards Yanchep town (via the station) to have a look at the lagoon. We got off and walked about a kilometre between bus stops via the lagoon. Great spot. Hopefully I can go back there one day and have a dip. Once getting on the bus again we headed to Eglington to get a train. We only went past on the bus but I was quite surprised the Yanchep shopping centre was already rather sizeable. I kinda expected there to be little out that way yet but there’s a lot of homes already. I’m sure the train will be very popular.
The rebuilt Croydon train station in Melbourne’s outer east opened early this morning, marking the completion of level crossing removal works on the Lilydale line. The line is now level crossing free and mostly double tracked, apart from the 4.5km section between Mooroolbark and Lilydale which remains a single track.
Sydney Metro extension between Chatswood and Sydenham will open on Monday August 19- was announced on 2gb and 9news
It’s good to see that despite the rail safety approval delay they still had their finger on the launch button in anticipation for getting signed off.
Haven’t had the chance to commute north to try out the metro when I’ve visited Sydney, will definitely have an easy chance now that it reaches the city!
For some reason YouTube is feeding me local media coverage of Sydney public transport developments. I can’t believe the difference vs Melb. Mainstream media in Victoria only ever serves up the nimby, Debbie downer and mindless liberal party narratives. Every project is introduced as “the troubled and controversial xyz”. In Sydney there is actual positivity .
I’m glad you enjoyed it and thanks for sharing your experience too! Hope you enjoyed P-Town too. Hopefully if you return next, the PT system is expanded!
was even happening back in the 1960s and 1970s with the planning and construction of the City Loop. Hard to believe that there was push back on the concept that we take for granted now.
Although one project that was gladly failed was a planned redevelopment of Flinders Street station in the 1970s which had a modern twin towers above the train station, leaving only the heritage station entrance intact, it seems!
