Music videos are also available to view on YouTube around the world.
There is, sometimes, much of a demand in New Zealand. Over in Australia, there is an all-night music video show that screens on ABC TV - “rage”. It was first screened on the weekend of Friday 17 April 1987. With other programmes like Soul Train and Video Hits no longer being produced, rage is the oldest music television programme currently still in production as of now.
As television came to New Zealand in June 1960, several generations of New Zealanders kept up with the music scene through dedicated music shows on television - among them were “C’mon” in the 1960s; “Happen Inn” and “Grunt Machine” in the 1970s; “Ready to Roll”, “Radio with Pictures” and “Shazam!” in the 1980s; and “RTR” in the 1990s. We’ve gone from music hall, variety and talent shows in the 1960s and 1970s to video clip-based shows in the 1980s and beyond.
In 1986 TVNZ’s music shows were taken off the air following a dispute with record companies, who were demanding payment for video clips that were becoming increasingly expensive to produce. TVNZ refused to pay to screen them on the grounds that this was ‘a form of sales promotion’. The dispute was resolved by the end of the year and the shows returned to air.
Today, New Zealanders can now view music videos online. There’s more information on the NZHistory website:
Over in Australia, “rage” was originally created for the ABC by executive producer Mark FitzGerald in early 1987 under the working title “rage til you puke”. This was later shortened to rage, as this was deemed more likely to be acceptable to the ABC board. It debuted in April 1987 – the same month as MTV Australia debuted as a late night programme on the Nine Network and two months after Video Hits debuted on the Ten Network.
More details regarding rage can be found on Wikipedia:
Part 1 was devoted to music programming. In Part 2, I have here a few details regarding New Zealand made comedy, drama and youth television on PTV2.
Comedy
PTV2 has a commitment to New Zealand comedy.
Pants Optional is a Saturday Night Live type sketch show featuring the best comedians in the country. The hour-long show is filmed in front of a live studio audience and pokes fun at current events and the pop culture of our times. The cast includes Guy Montgomery, Laura Daniel, Eli Matthewson, Alice Snedden, Nic Sampson, Donna Brookbanks, Chris Parker, Tom Sainsbury, Brynley Stent, Kura Forrester, Rhiannon McCall, Hamish Parkinson, Joseph Moore and Eddy Dever - all of whom are part of Snort, an improvisational comedy troupe.
Educators is an unscripted sitcom set behind the scenes of an ordinary Kiwi secondary school, following the hopelessly inept people in charge of educating the next generation. Created by and starring Jonny Brugh (“What We Do in the Shadows”) and Jackie van Beek (“The Breaker Upperers”) with Cohen Holloway (“Fresh Eggs”), Kura Forrester (“The Adventures of Suzy Boon”), Rick Donald (“800 Words”) and Tom Sainsbury (“Stake Out”) to name just a few. This is a made-for-television version of this programme, originally commissioned by TVNZ as a web series.
Good Grief is a sitcom with Eve and Grace Palmer as two very different sisters who inherit a funeral home - and its eccentric employees - from their koro (grandfather). Also starring Vinnie Bennett, Josh Thomson and Sophie Hambleton. This is a made-for-television version of this programme, originally commissioned by TVNZ as a web series.
Golden Boy is a sitcom which follows the hilarious life of small-town girl Mitch as she lives in the constant shadow of her rugby star brother Tama. Featuring an all-star cast which includes Hayley Sproull, Kimberley Crossman, Rima Te Wiata, Dean O’Gorman, James Rolleston and many more.
Mean Mums is a sitcom from the creators of “Outrageous Fortune” and “Westside”. It follows the hyper-competitive world of passive aggressive primary school mothers. Starring Morgana O’Reilly (“Neighbours”), Anna Jullienne and Aroha Rawson.
Raised by Refugees is a comedy series from Pax Assadi (“Frickin Dangerous Bro”), inviting viewers into the confusing, and at times harsh, reality of being a part-Pakistani part-Iranian kid growing up in post-9/11 New Zealand.
SIS is a six-part sketch show from the creators of “Baby Mama’s Club”.
New Zealand Today is a comedy/documentary series where volunteer journalist Guy Williams visits small-town New Zealand to investigate what he thinks are the most interesting stories in New Zealand today.
Frickin Dangerous Bro… On the Road is a comedy/documentary series with Frickin Dangerous Bro - a comedy trio made up of Jamaine Ross, James Roque and Pax Assadi - as they ‘take their stand-up show on the road, visiting provincial towns and exploring what makes each part of Aotearoa unique’. This is a made-for-television version of this programme, originally commissioned by TVNZ as a web series.
Drama
PTV2 is committed to a teen drama series, Head High, which is set in the home of a struggling but hopeful working-class family.
Head High charts the rise of high school rugby stars, Mana and Tai (played by Jayden Daniels and Lionel Wellington respectively). Two brothers, one dream. Under the guidance of their step-father coach Vince (Craig Hall) and police officer mum Renee (Miriama McDowell), the boys fight to achieve the ‘Kiwi’ dream of the black jersey. But will the game of rugby bring this whanau together or tear them apart forever?
A realistic snapshot of young urban Maori mindsets, the bilingual drama series Ahikāroa would be part of the PTV2 schedule. It aims to deliver gritty, funny and sexy storylines to engage PTV2’s rangatahi (youth) audiences.
Youth
PTV2 has a commitment to magazine-style youth television. It reflects the “attitude” which is expected to prove popular with the channel’s youth audience.
Short Sportz - hosted by Jayden King from The Edge - is a weekly show about young New Zealand sports achievers looking at what motivates them and the sacrifices made to excel in their sport.
Infocus is a magazine show with Flava’s Athena Angelou, as host, giving its rangatahi (young people) an in-depth look at what goes on in the teenage world. It delivers a blend of news, views and issues of importance to the emerging youth of Aotearoa as well as profiles of the country’s young tall poppies putting both teenagers and young adults on-screen to tell their own inspiring real life stories of achievement, skill and determination.
Airing on New Zealand television for more than a decade, Fresh is a show that brings ‘Polynesians from around the world with their Poly smiles, swag and sunshine to our screens’.
As mentioned before, PTV2 is a hybrid of general entertainment and music television and also screens some of the most popular television brands in the world.
PTV3 is PTV Network’s ‘broad entertainment’ channel for 55+ year olds. It targets a more mature audience than that of PTV1 or PTV2 and broadcasts a lineup of quality British dramas, classic comedies, all-time favourite movies, thought-provoking documentaries and top-tier factual and arts programming. PTV3 also plays host to Channel 4 News and CBS News, and gives viewers another opportunity to see some of the best programming from PTV1.

Judging by the schedules shown so far, I’d probably be switching between PTV2 and 3 throughout the day, going over to PTV 1 for the game shows and news, then coming back to watch whatever interested me on either channel.
Welcome to Media Spy, @LiamP! In case you missed it, here are some of the highlights in regard to programming on PTV1 with additional details where necessary.
News and Current Affairs
PTV1 is committed to news and current affairs programming right throughout the day. The PTV News and Current Affairs team are not always the same people as Newshub through MediaWorks TV/Discovery NZ, but others are attracted from other New Zealand sources like RNZ, TVNZ and so on.
PTV News Today screens weekdays from 6-8.30am and is anchored by experienced New Zealand broadcaster, Wendy Petrie (from TVNZ). Unlike most other morning news services like Breakfast or The AM Show (in real life), I describe PTV News Today as ‘the must-watch early morning news programme for New Zealanders who want to start the day fully informed’. It focuses solely on national and international news, sport, business and weather information in the form of rolling half hour bulletins (with headlines every 15 minutes), and does not include magazine or lifestyle segments.
PTV Midday News and PTV Afternoon News (formerly PTV News: First at 4.30) are PTV Network’s weekday news bulletins in half hour formats, anchored by Jared McCulloch (who, in real life, is based in Central Otago as a reporter for TVNZ and has a background which includes regional television and radio newsrooms around New Zealand). Each bulletin (weekdays at 12pm and 4.30pm respectively) provides its viewers with the latest updates on the day’s developing news stories, a comprehensive business report, sports news and a national weather forecast.
PTV Network has a commitment to regional news and PTV Local News screens every weeknight at 6pm for 52 weeks of the year. Each regional bulletin is produced at PTV Network’s studios in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, and drawn on the resources of the PTV News newsroom with support from NZ On Air. Parochial and proud of it, the PTV Local News bulletins present comprehensive daily regional news, sports, weather and feature stories - with a particular emphasis on local events, local issues and local people - in half hour packages.
PTV National News is PTV Network’s flagship evening news programme - weeknights at 6.30pm (following PTV Local News) and weekends at 6pm. Anchored by Daniel Faitaua on weeknights and Tom McRae on weekends, PTV National News covers the important news of the day from New Zealand and around the world, drawing on the resources of the PTV News newsroom and international sources (CNN, AP Reuters, Channel 9, ABC, CBS and ITN). The role of sports anchor is shared by Andrew Gourdie and Jeff McTainsh, who provide comprehensive daily sporting news and analysis, while, in exciting new roles as weather presenters, Jessica Tyson and Lucy Brock keep New Zealanders updated on national weather forecasts with state-of-the-art technology and assistance from qualified meteorologists.
For busy viewers - unable to watch the news on PTV1 - PTV Midday News (at 12pm), PTV Afternoon News (at 4.30pm) and PTV National News (at 6.30pm) would be rebroadcast on PTV3 at different times so that, in order to catch up, they can switch over to that channel. It is intended that the midday and 4.30pm bulletins would be ‘delayed by one hour’ (i.e. 1pm and 5.30pm respectively) and the weeknight edition of PTV National News would be ‘delayed by 1.5 hours’ (i.e. at 8pm).
A Current Affair is PTV Network’s nightly current affairs programme fronted by Ryan Bridge. Screening weeknights at 7pm (following PTV National News) with a repeat screening at around 11pm on PTV3, ACA takes an in-depth look at the topical events and issues of importance to us as New Zealanders. Unlike the TVNZ version of ACA (with Susie Nordqvist and Matty McLean), the programme is progressively live-to-air and combines current affairs investigations, feature stories and studio interviews. Even though the name “A Current Affair” is now the same as the TVNZ/Channel 9 version, it has no links to its TVNZ/Channel 9 namesake.
Nightline is anchored by Mitch McCann and screened weeknights at around 10.30pm. As PTV Network’s ‘late night news programme for New Zealanders who want to finish the evening fully informed’, Nightline offers a mixture of news, sport, business, weather and current affairs just like Checkpoint on RNZ. Janika ter Ellen would wrap up the day’s news as Nightline’s newsreader.
On weekends PTV Late News is PTV Network’s 10-15 minute late news bulletin anchored by Tom McRae. It provides audiences with a comprehensive wrap of the day’s news, sport and weather in the form of a 15 minute bulletin on Saturday and a 10 minute bulletin on Sunday (at around 10.30pm). PTV Late News is also shown on public holidays and during the Christmas/New Year holiday season, read by the same anchor for PTV National News that evening.
60 Minutes is PTV Network’s flagship current affairs programme, screening Sundays at 6.30pm with a repeat screening the next day (Mondays at 9.30pm) on PTV3. 60 Minutes offers its viewers a blend of hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, backed by a team of US, Australian and New Zealand correspondents. The New Zealand 60 Minutes team includes Melissa Chan-Green (Newshub), Garth Bray (TVNZ), Guyon Espiner (RNZ), Melanie Reid (Newsroom) and Tristram Clayton (ex-NZ Herald Focus).
Sunday is PTV Network’s weekly current affairs magazine programme, screening Sundays at 9am with Nightline’s Mitch McCann as host. Sunday - with no links to the TVNZ namesake - is designed to provide audiences with a two-hour format that includes local, national and international news, politics, in-depth reports on issues affecting New Zealand and the world, film reviews, arts features and music.
The Chapman Group is a weekly panel discussion programme hosted by Wallace Chapman and a rotating panel of journalists, critics and media commentators; it screens every Wednesday at 9.30pm. This is followed at 10pm by Four Corners, a weekly programme of international current affairs introduced by Guyon Espiner.
Meet the Press is a weekly discussion programme screening Sundays at 12pm. Host Corin Dann is joined each week by a panel of invited journalists as they interview a prominent newsmaker about a topical issue. This programme is repeated on PTV3 later in the evening (i.e. Sundays at around 10pm).
Sport
PTV Network plays host to the best free-to-air sports coverage in New Zealand, particularly with regard to rugby, the pre-eminent televised sport in the country. The PTV Sport team would be the same people as Sky Sport, in which I describe the team at Sky as ‘specialists in sports content’.
Super Rugby Aotearoa
On average, there are two games of Super Rugby Aotearoa per week. PTV1 has full delayed coverage of a Friday match (at 8.30pm), with the Saturday match being shown over on PTV4 (at 8.30pm).
If a Super Rugby Aotearoa game takes place on a Sunday afternoon, PTV1 would screen delayed coverage of that game as part of “Sports Sunday” (from 4.30-6.30pm). As a result of Sports Sunday’s later finish (6.30pm), PTV1’s Sunday programming would begin about half an hour later.
The Super Rugby Aotearoa final would be televised live on PTV1 without commercial interruption.
Mitre 10 Cup
On average, there are seven games of Mitre 10 Cup per week. PTV1 has full delayed coverage of three Mitre 10 Cup matches each Friday (at 8.30pm), Saturday (at approx 3.45pm as part of “Sportsworld”) and Sunday (at approx 3.30pm as part of “Sports Sunday”).
Over on PTV4, there are two highlights packages in primetime (similar to Seven’s Big League as seen on HSV7 Melbourne during the 1980s): Saturday at 8.30pm and Sunday at 6.30pm. Each package includes recorded highlights of the Mitre 10 Cup games played during the day.
When it comes to the playoffs, both PTV1 and PTV4 have full delayed coverage of the Mitre 10 Cup semifinals. The Championship Final and Premiership Final would be televised live on PTV1 without commercial interruption.
International Rugby (All Blacks)
For the first time in years, PTV1 would screen New Zealand’s premier rugby games ‘live and free’ without commercial interruption - the Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup fixtures, the mid-year Steinlager Series and the All Blacks’ end-of-year tour of Northern Hemisphere. Commentary would be provided by the same team as Sky (in real life) - Grant Nisbett, Justin Marshall and Ian Smith (or Jeff Wilson if ‘Smithy’ is unavailable).
NRL
PTV1 screens delayed coverage of one NRL game each Friday night (straight after Nightline), with the other NRL games being shown Thursday, Saturday and Sunday night over on PTV4 (at approx 10.30pm on those nights). PTV2 would be the ‘free-to-air home of the NZ Warriors’ and all Warriors’ games during the NRL season - both home and away - would be shown in full on that channel.
Other events
Other sporting events expected to screen on PTV1 would include:
NRL Grand Final (live)
FA Cup Final (live)
Australian Open/French Open/US Open (highlights; live coverage over on PTV4)
US Masters/US PGA Championship/US Open/British Open (highlights; live coverage over on PTV4)
Melbourne Cup and premier NZ Horse Racing events, i.e. NZ Trotting Cup, NZ Galloping Cup, Wellington Cup, Auckland Cup etc (live)
Summer and Winter Olympic Games (live, with additional coverage on PTV4)
Commonwealth Games (live, with additional coverage on PTV4)
Sportsworld
Bernadine Oliver-Kerby, Goran Paladin and Aidan Rodley would co-host Sportsworld (from 1pm) every Saturday afternoon. Sportsworld is a blend of live action, highlights, round-ups of local and international sporting events, live crosses to selected horse races, the latest sports news and features, and score updates. Scoreboard is a 15 minute ‘results service’ starting at 5.45pm and keeps fans up-to-date detailed grassroots rugby and racing results from around New Zealand as they arrive, plus previews of upcoming events to come.
Sports Sunday
Sports Sunday is hosted by Andrew Gourdie and Ravinder Hunia. The show - which screens every Sunday from 2pm - would be similar in format to Sportsworld and offers its fans a mix of live action, highlights and previews. Ross Karl hosts Aotearoa Rugby Panel, an hour-long segment (from 5pm) in which he and a panel of regular guests - Brad Weber, Bryn Hall, James Parsons and Josh Ioane - discuss the weekend’s rugby games so far, showing final scores and edited highlights. During the Mitre 10 Cup season, Aotearoa Rugby Panel would commence at 5.30pm (following delayed coverage of a Sunday game as part of Sports Sunday) and run for half an hour.
Entertainment
PTV Network is offering the best game shows, with all new versions of Wheel of Fortune and Sale of the Century screening Mondays to Fridays from 5-6pm on PTV1. Both shows are repeated from 6.30-7.30pm over on PTV3 to offer a choice for viewers.
Hosted by Matt Gibb (Squirt, Studio 2, U live, Lotto, Kiwi Living etc) and Diamond Langi (Miss Universe New Zealand 2019), the new-look Wheel of Fortune sees everyday Kiwis competing against each other to solve word puzzles and win money and prizes. Meanwhile, Mike Puru (Flipside, The Bachelor NZ, The Cafe) and newcomer Evana Corric (a 20+ year veteran of the modelling/talent industry) join forces to host the all new Sale of the Century - a quiz show for the quick-witted, with big prizes at stake.
Meanwhile, Jason Reeves (from Coast) and Matilda Green (The Bachelor NZ 2015) co-host the all new version of It’s in the Bag, a travelling quiz show in which they invite contestants from right throughout the country to choose either the money or the bag. Sidewalk Karaoke, the travelling game show, has a fresh new look and new hosts - Clint Randell (from The Edge) and Eve Palmer (The 4.30 Show, The Adam & Eve Show, Good Grief).
Saturday night entertainment wouldn’t be complete without an international TV success story, The Price Is Right, hosted by Stephen McIvor (from Sky Sport). The Price Is Right is a game show where contestants ‘come on down’ and compete for prizes and cash, including cars and holidays, in games that test their knowledge of consumer goods pricing.
On Tuesday nights, Meg Mansell (from The Edge) hosts New Zealand’s Funniest Home Videos - 30 minutes of the most hilarious home movie catastrophes caught on camera from New Zealand and around the world - while an all new version of Candid Camera sees ZM’s Megan Papas and Billy T Award winning comedian Tim Batt catching unsuspecting members of the New Zealand public on hidden cameras in some odd predicaments. Keep an eye out for appearances by the likes of Hilary Barry, John Campbell, Jono and Ben, Mike Hosking and many other New Zealand celebrities as they catch themselves on hidden cameras!
On Thursday nights, Jason Gunn Tonight is a live-to-air talk/variety show direct from Christchurch. Hosted by well-known media personality Jason Gunn (well known to audiences as the host of Dancing with the Stars from the 2005-09 TVNZ era), the show combines live music, skits, comedy routines, celebrity interviews and various competitions like “The Wheel”, a phone-in quiz/game similar to Australian variety shows like In Melbourne Tonight and The Don Lane Show.
The live Lotto draws complete PTV1’s entertainment offering. Walter Neilands (ex-Sticky TV) and Jessica Tyson (from PTV National News) would join Sonia Gray and Jordan Vandermade as co-hosts of the Lotto draws, which screen every Wednesday and Saturday at the new time of 8.30pm. Please note that, if an All Blacks test match takes place in New Zealand on a Saturday night, the Saturday Lotto draw would be shown on PTV2.
Other entertainment shows expected to screen on PTV1 include:
Give Us a Clue: Corin Dann hosts a New Zealand celebrity game show based on charades, with team leaders Dai Henwood and Kimberley Crossman.

Drama Deadline, a major local drama production from Screentime, is expected to be commissioned by PTV Network for broadcast on PTV1. Set in a national newspaper and inspired by actual events, Deadline is a 13-part series which follows the personal and professional lives of the staff and the stories they cover.
PTV1 is also looking at an hour-long, weekly serial drama for next year. The new Christchurch-based drama would stimulate the film and television industry with more than 100 new jobs. It would be filmed on location and at a brand new film studio - converted from an old hospital in Templeton and developed by Jordan Mauger (ex-The Bachelor NZ).
Discussions are taking place with South Pacific Pictures (the producers of Outrageous Fortune, Go Girls, Nothing Trivial, The Almighty Johnsons, The Brokenwood Mysteries, Westside, Mean Mums etc), built around a young New Zealand police dog squad.

Our World (to be introduced by Tom McRae) is a strand devoted to natural history documentaries through the BBC’s longest running “Natural World” series and beyond. It screens every Thursday at 7.30pm.

The fly-on-the-wall series follows ordinary people as they are admitted and discharged from hospital.

Getaway - hosted by Laura McGoldrick, Matt Chisholm and Nickson Clark - is a programme that provides its viewers with the latest information on holiday destinations across New Zealand and the world. Palmers Garden Show is the complete gardening programme aimed at giving inspiration and information to everyone from first home owners to those who have been gardening all their lives. Beauty and the Beast is an advice panel show hosted by broadcasting legend Mark Sainsbury (‘The Beast’) and his rotating panel of ‘Beauties’ (Sharyn Casey, Stacey Morrison, Teuila Blakely, Toni Street etc). ‘Sainso’ and the talented and knowledgeable women draw on their own life experiences to answer viewers’ questions via a phone hotline, emails or postal mail.

@OnAir It seems that, because Crowne Plaza Hotel is a managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facility, Huawei Centre (at 120 Albert Street) may not be a perfect location for PTV Network’s Auckland operations. So, in order to prevent Covid-19 from spreading into the community, I had to find an alternative location.
The real-life headquarters of Sky Television - at 10 Panorama Road in Mt Wellington, Auckland - would become the new home of PTV Network.
Last year, Motion Sickness (a multi-award winning creative and production agency) produced a series of “Your News Bulletin” commercials. Recorded at Sky’s Mt Wellington studios, the “Your News Bulletin” broadcast was described as ‘a fully-integrated fake news channel, complete with fake anchors, fake headlines, and fake stories that got the people talking quicker than you can say BREAKING NEWS’.
Your News Bulletin was recently launched by Netsafe and Facebook as an educational tool in an effort to help people identify fake news. Latest Netsafe research shows that eight in 10 New Zealanders recall having seen fake news on social media, 52% of whom have seen it on New Zealand online news sites, 40% in print newspapers and one in three think they have seen it on New Zealand television.
It is intended that news and current affairs programmes would be produced at Mt Wellington. A state-of-the-art newsroom, offices for current affairs programmes and the network’s sports department (PTV Sport), sales offices and administration offices would also be located at Mt Wellington instead of Huawei Centre. Studio facilities at Parnell (NEP/Trackside facility, in real life), Grafton (“The Project”, in real life) and Henderson (South Pacific Pictures, in real life) would be utilised, although Parnell would serve as PTV Network’s broadcast facility.
Craig McMurtrie has over 40 years experience in broadcast journalism in New Zealand and Australia, and has been with the ABC since 1991. Prior to that, he had worked at RNZ and TVNZ.
He is, in real life, the editorial director for the ABC and would be perfect for the role of Director of News, Sport and Current Affairs at my fictional New Zealand based network - PTV Network New Zealand (Patrick Te Pou Enterprises Ltd) - if my dreams become a reality.
Joining him as Head of News and Current Affairs would be Pip Keane (from RNZ), with Brian Hitchcock (from Sky) as Head of Sport.
I also intend to assemble a group of some very important people from Sky and hire them as members of PTV Network’s executive leadership team: Chaz Savage as Chief Product & Information Officer, Michael Frampton as Director of People and Talent, Steve Bayliss as Marketing Director, Chris Major as General Counsel & Corporate Affairs Director, Prabhu Singh as Chief Technology Officer and Jonny Errington as Commercial Director. Cate Slater (from TVNZ) would be appointed to the role of Director of Content, and Barry Sadlier (from MediaWorks) would become Chief Financial Officer. Glen Kyne (from Discovery NZ) would also be on board as Business Strategy Director.

@OnAir In real life Sky owns the broadcast rights to the NRL which includes the Warriors’ games (both home and away) and it does exist in the real world, not the fictional world.
On PTV2, through PTV Network as a fictional broadcaster, it is intended that the only way to see the NRL televised ‘live and free’ would be the Warriors’ matches playing in New Zealand (i.e. Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland).
If the Warriors play in Australia, those matches would be delayed via PTV2 and Warriors fans had to go to a premium sport streaming service - similar to Spark Sport (in real life) - in order to watch every NRL game live and on-demand. It would be known as PTV Sport+ and I describe it as an extension of the PTV Sport brand ($39.99 per month).
PTV1 would broadcast the NRL Grand Final live, and PTV4 would broadcast the State of Origin series live.
@foxyrover For the last time, I developed PTV Sport+ as a premium sport streaming service - similar to Spark Sport (in real life) - and an extension of the PTV Sport brand.
Also for the last time, my fictional network is so much more than just advertising. In order to keep my network clean and make it run smoothly, it would be able to generate revenue from customers through a variety of different sources: subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services, linear television narrowcasting services for commercial premises (like pubs and clubs), merchandise, community sponsorship and many more. It’s called “Direct to Customer”.
An example of those is PTV On Demand+, a commercial-free version of the ad-funded PTV On Demand service. The SVOD service is similar to the ITV Hub+ from the UK, and it would allow audiences to enjoy their favourite PTV Network shows and movies without commercial interruption for only $14.99 per month, whereas the regular PTV On Demand service is free of charge and fully funded by advertising.
Talking of PTV Sport+, it’s like Spark Sport (in real life) and the monthly cost of this sport streaming service is $39.99 per month. It gives customers access to the best in local and international sporting events live and on-demand. Round-the-clock sports channels are streamed live, and on-demand content includes full replays and extended highlights.
PTV Sport+ is home to PTV Ringside, the home of pay-per-view events like boxing, UFC and WWE. All PTV Ringside events are available to purchase individually, separate to a PTV Sport+ monthly subscription.
PTV Sport+ and PTV Ringside would be shown in commercial premises, including pubs and clubs, as linear television narrowcasting services. These would be received on special satellite set-top boxes with a digital television recording (DTR) capability, and would bring in the crowds with exciting sporting action with flexible payment options.
@OnAirPTV Shop is an initiative of PTV Network. It sells a variety of top quality merchandise like watches, T-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, caps, beanies, fedoras, socks, coffee mugs, drink bottles, umbrellas, backpacks, tote bags, sports bags, frisbees and much more. Those items are not usually sold in shops across New Zealand - like The Warehouse, Kmart or Briscoes - so people can only buy stuff via an online shop (ptvshop.co.nz) or over the phone (0800 PTV SHOP = 0800 788 746).
I have lots and lots of new developments to come, especially within my network. For the last time, believe me.
