Where did A Current Affair go?

@TBoy Once a week - on Thursdays at 7.30pm. This is to make way for the all new version of what was then ‘New Zealand’s richest quiz show’, Sale of the Century, in the all important 7pm timeslot. Back in those days, game shows on New Zealand television used to air at 7pm every weeknight and attract a bigger audience in primetime.

Unlike 60 Minutes, the weekly A Current Affair will remain studio-based and combine pre-recorded items (by PTV News reporters and contributors) with live interviews and panels, where invited guests discuss the major stories and issues of the week, in an hour-long format.

60 Minutes, on the other hand, will be devoted to both current affairs and investigative journalism, combining locally produced items with content from America and Australia. It will screen Sundays at 6.30pm as a build-up to the US sitcoms, Young Sheldon and B Positive (as seen on CBS).

NEW BRITISH DRAMAS ON PTV3 & PTV+

Coming soon: PTV Network will screen more British programming, including a slate of new British dramas for broadcast on PTV3 (“The Home of British Drama”) and PTV+. However, PTV+ is THE place to be for exclusive content, first looks and ‘express plays from the UK’.

Below is a detailed taste of new British dramas to come on PTV Network.

ANGELA BLACK

Angela Black’s life appears idyllic: a house in suburban London, days working volunteer shifts at a dogs home, two beautiful sons and a charming, hard-working husband - Olivier.

However, beneath this façade of charmed domesticity, Angela, played by Joanne Froggatt, is a victim of domestic violence.

Angela Black is a Hitchcockian thriller that follows one woman as she risks everything she holds dear to fight back against the man who has suppressed and tormented her for most of her adult life.

THE CONTROL ROOM

The Control Room is a three-part thriller set in Glasgow, starring Iain De Caestecker (“Roadkill”) and Joanna Vanderham.

The series tells the story of Gabe (De Caestecker), an ordinary man who works as an emergency call handler for the Scottish Ambulance Service in Glasgow.

The cast also includes Sharon Rooney, Taj Atwal (“Line of Duty”), Daniel Portman (“Vigil”) and Stuart Bowman (“Bodyguard”).

THE GIRL BEFORE

Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Oyelowo star in The Girl Before, a made-for-television adaptation of JP Delaney’s best-selling novel of the same title.

The drama tells the story of Jane (Mbatha-Raw), who gets the chance to move into a beautiful, ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect (Oyelowo).

There’s just one catch: the occupants must abide by his list of exacting rules. Jane starts to feel the house changing her in unexpected ways, but when she makes the shocking discovery about her predecessor, Emma (Jessica Plummer), she’s forced to confront unnerving similarities. As the two women’s timelines interweave, Jane begins to question if her fate will be the same as the girl before…

The cast of The Girl Before also includes former “EastEnders” stars Jessica Plummer and Ben Hardy.

INSIDE MAN

Steven Moffat’s mystery thriller Inside Man follows a prisoner on death row in the US, a vicar in a quiet British town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar, as they cross paths in the most unexpected way.

The four-part miniseries features David Tennant in his role as a small-town vicar, and the cast also includes Stanley Tucci in the title role, Lydia West (“It’s a Sin”) and Dolly Wells (“The Pursuit of Love”).

THE LARKINS

The Larkins is the much-anticipated new television adaption of H.E Bates’ novel “The Darling Buds of May”.

This new six-part series is written by acclaimed screenwriter Simon Nye with the aim of capturing the warmth, optimism and escapism of the Larkin family for a modern generation.

Set in the late 1950s, The Larkins is the story of a working-class family led by the golden-hearted wheeler-dealer Pop Larkin, played by Bradley Walsh (“The Chase”) and his wife Ma, portrayed by Joanna Scanlan, together with their six children, including the beautiful Mariette, played by Sabrina Bartlett.

MARIA ANTOINETTE

French historical drama Marie Antoinette is a feminist depiction of the life of the ill-fated iconic queen from the writer of “The Favourite”.

The eight-part series tells the story of the modern and avant-garde young queen (Emilia SchĂźle) who was only 14 when she left Austria to marry the Dauphin of France. Fighting against rumours that undermined her reputation, she navigated the rules of the French court under pressure to continue the Bourbon line.

MARRIAGE

BAFTA winners Nicola Walker and Sean Bean star in a brand new BBC drama, Marriage, from the multi-award winning writer and director of “Him and Her” and “Mum”, Stefan Golaszewski.

Marriage sees married couple Ian (Bean) and Emma (Walker) dealing with the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages as the drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship.

THE RESPONDER

A six-part crime drama, The Responder, stars Martin Freeman as urgent response officer Chris and Adelayo Adedayo (“Some Girls”) as his partner.

The series takes place over a series of night shifts in Liverpool, in which Chris battles crisis after crisis - both physical and moral. As he tries to train up his rookie partner(Adedayo), the pair must find a way to navigate the relentless nature of their shifts whilst trying to understand each other.

Written by first-time author Tony Schumacher, the series is based on the former policeman’s real-life experiences as an officer on the beat in the city, whilst struggling with his own mental health.

RIDLEY ROAD

A brand new gripping (and very timely) thriller, Ridley Road, is a made-for-television adaptation of Jo Bloom’s bestselling novel of the same name.

The four-part thriller tells the story of young Jewish woman Vivien Epstein (played by newcomer Agnes O’Casey), who leaves her comfortable life in Manchester to stand up to the growing neo-Nazi movement in post-war Britain.

When Vivien discovers her missing boyfriend Jack (Tom Varley) has been badly injured, she infiltrates a neo-Nazi movement that’s becoming increasingly prominent in East London, risking everything for her beliefs and for the man she loves.

SHERWOOD

Hot off the heels of “The Serpent” and “Line of Duty”, comes another brilliant-looking BBC crime drama, this time inspired by two real-life Nottinghamshire murders and the subsequent man hunt of Robert Boyer and Terry Rodgers in 2004.

The series stars Joanne Froggatt (“Liar”), David Morrissey, Robert Glenister, Philip Jackson and Lorraine Ashbourne and - despite being based on true events - will be a fictional dramatic portrayal.

SHOWTRIAL

Showtrial is a brand new twisty crime drama from the producers of “Bodyguard” and “The Pembrokeshire Murders”.

The darkly-humoured legal thriller tells the story of a high-profile court case that sees a privileged young woman called Talitha Campbell charged with conspiracy to commit murder, and stars Tracy Ifeachor, James Frain (“True Detective”) and Sharon D Clarke (“Doctor Who”).

STEPHEN

Sharlene Whyte, Steve Coogan and Hugh Quarshie play leading roles in Stephen, the three-part sequel to the groundbreaking drama, The Murder of Stephen Lawrence.

The drama portrays events from 2006, thirteen years after Stephen’s death on the evening of 22 April 1993, from a racially motivated attack whilst waiting for a bus inWell Hall Road, Eltham.

The drama tells the story of the ongoing struggle by Doreen and Neville Lawrence to achieve justice and how a detective, DCI Clive Driscoll - working closely with the Lawrences - puts together an investigation that finally, more than 18 years after his death, secures the convictions of two of the gang who committed the murder of Stephen.

A VERY BRITISH SCANDAL

Claire Foy stars as Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll in Sarah Phelps’ limited series A Very British Scandal.

Following on from the award-winning “A Very English Scandal”, starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw, the three-parter focuses on the divorce of the Duke (played by Paul Bettany) and the Duchess (Foy), which became one of the most notorious, extraordinary and brutal legal cases of the 20th century.

It turns this scandal inside out in order to explore the social and political climate of post-war Britain, looking at attitudes towards women, and asking whether institutional misogyny was widespread at the time.

The cast of A Very British Scandal also includes Amanda Drew (“The Trial of Christine Keeler”, “Trust”), Richard McCabe (“Poldark”, “Harlots”), Phoebe Nicholls (“The Elephant Man”, “Fortitude”), Camilla Rutherford (“Phantom Thread”, “Fleming”), Timothy Renouf (“Afterlife of the Party”, “The Laureate”), Sophia Myles (“A Discovery of Witches”, “Spooks”), Sophie Ward (“The Moonstone”, “Land Girls”), Tim Steed (“The Death of Stalin”, “Cruella”) and Katherine Manners (“Press”, “War & Peace”).

VIGIL

Vigil is a brand new six-part thriller from the BBC, starring Suranne Jones (“Doctor Foster”) as DCI Amy Silva, who, along with DS Kirsten Longacre (played by Rose Leslie from “Game of Thrones”) is tasked with getting to the bottom of the mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a death on-board Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil.

When it’s clear a conspiracy is at play, this leads the police into conflict with the Navy and the British security services.

WATERLOO ROAD

Waterloo Road, an award-winning drama from the BBC, returns to the small screen after six years. The new series will be set in a comprehensive school in Manchester, and focus on the challenges that teachers, parents and pupils face amidst the ongoing pandemic.

The original show from 2006 until 2015, and was set in both Rochdale and Greenock. It launched the careers of Jenna Coleman and “Bridgerton” stars Rege-Jean Page and Phoebe Dyvenor.

THE NEWSREADER

The Newsreader
Anna Torv and Sam Reid. Photo courtesy of Werner Films and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

The Newsreader is a six-part Australian series set in the maelstrom of a commercial television newsroom in 1986.

Dale Jennings (Sam Reid) is a diligent young reporter who is desperate to become a newsreader and Helen Norville (Anna Torv) is a notoriously ‘difficult’ star newsreader determined to build credibility. Over three months, the pair cover an extraordinary chain of news events from the shock of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, to the hype of Halley’s Comet and the complexities of the AIDS crisis. A deep bond is formed that will upend their lives and transform the very fabric of the nightly news bulletin.

Also starring Robert Taylor, William McInnes, Michelle Lim Davidson, Stephen Peacocke, Chai Hansen, Chum Ehelepola and Marg Downey.

The Newsreader screens Thursdays on PTV1 at 8.30pm from 23 December. This programme is part of PTV Network’s summer season.

PTV NETWORK REBRAND

Hi there! Because it was my birthday recently (31 October 2021), according to @OnAir, PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) is undergoing a major rebrand.

PTV1, PTV2, PTV3, PTV4, PTV5 and PTV6 will each have a fresh new look by having new names; most of which are based on the ones created by @Kathryn_Milin. The programme formats and target demographics will remain the same.

PTV+ (PTV Network’s online streaming and on-demand video platform) will have a new logo.

ONE (formerly PTV1)

One is PTV Network’s flagship channel for 25-54 year olds and offers a diverse range of top quality programming - local and international hit dramas, light entertainment, comedy, movies and documentaries, as well as news, sport and current affairs - to the millions of viewers who tune in every month. This is the channel where New Zealanders stay informed but mostly entertained.

FLIX (formerly PTV2)

Flix is PTV Network’s pure entertainment channel for 18-39 year olds and broadcasts a lineup of engaging dramas, comedy and reality shows, as well as hit movies. The channel is also the free-to-air home of the Warriors (NRL), the Breakers (NBL), the mighty Bathurst 1000 and the Auckland SuperSprint, plus the latest WWE Wrestling action fresh off the satellite from the States.

GEM (formerly PTV3)

Gem is PTV Network’s high quality entertainment channel for 40-64 year olds, with a secondary audience of all people 55+, and broadcasts an indulgent blend of British dramas, classic comedies, all-time favourite movies, thought-provoking documentaries and top-tier factual and arts programming.

SMASH (formerly PTV4)

Smash is PTV Network’s male-skewed entertainment channel and offers premium sport, premium factual and scripted programmes and action-packed movies, along with action and adventure programming with particular appeal to men 25-54. CHIC (formerly PTV5)

Chic is PTV Network’s female-skewed entertainment channel. Chic is ‘the home of guilty pleasures, glamour and fame’, but there’s more to life than just reality shows. The channel offers a range of programming with particular appeal to women 25-54 - such as ‘true crime’ documentaries, factual shows, talk shows, dramas and movies - and has firmly established itself as the free-to-air home of netball with the Silver Ferns and the ANZ Premiership.

MAX (New channel)

Max is PTV Network’s brand new music television channel. Recently discovering that there are more hours in the day than on any average 12-hour clock, the tube can now actually glow all night long. Max is targeted towards all people 18-39 and plays the best and latest music videos - 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Specialist music shows appear throughout the schedule.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM CPTV

In response to PTV Network New Zealand’s major rebrand, there will be some changes to the CPTV (Children’s PTV) channel.

Due to many challenges with Channel 20 on the Freeview platform, combined with the transfer of all children’s programming to the new Shake channel (formerly PTV2), we announce the ceasing of transmission of the existing CPTV channel. This is a decision that has not been made lightly.

CPTV will become a digital platform and its dedicated website (cptv.co.nz) and app will continue to provide Kiwi kids with games, activities and on-demand content. With well over 20 kids titles available, there’s plenty to keep them entertained.

Taking over on Freeview Channel 20 will be PTV News 24.

PTV News 24 will carry a 24-hour direct satellite feed of CNN International, incorporating live coverage of world news as it breaks.

The channel will also air the latest and breaking news from New Zealand and around the world by supplementing CNN’s live feed with live simulcasts of PTV News bulletins as they are shown on One (formerly PTV1), ‘News 24 exclusive’ bulletins, same-day broadcasts of CBS News content and ‘filler’ programmes such as ‘news headlines’.

We thank you for your support of the CPTV channel and your favourite kids shows will always be available to you on Shake and the CPTV website and app.

Hey @Kathryn_Milin - have you heard about Gem and Max?

I created Gem as a replacement for PTV3. It is intended that British dramas and soaps (like new episodes of Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders - express from the UK) will play on Gem, as does ‘British Comedy Classics’ like Are You Being Served?, Last of the Summer Wine, Only Fools and Horses and Keeping Up Appearances.

Movies from the golden age of Hollywood and British cinema will be a key feature of the Gem schedule, along with classic TV series like Bonanza, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Matlock.

Documentary, factual and arts programming will screen on Gem in primetime and throughout Sunday evenings.

Meanwhile, music fans will enjoy Max.

Max is targeted towards all people 18-39 and provides a traditional music TV format primarily offering viewers clip based music television. Catering to a mainstream audience Max will feature a playlist of new and classic music videos - 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Specialist music shows will appear throughout the Max schedule and cover everything from Hip Hop and RnB through to Rock, Heavy Metal and Dance and Electronic music.

What do you think?

This is great! I am a big fan of Max! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I like it all, except for the PTV+Premium logo, I think having Premium spelt out like below would look better (hope you don’t mind these mock-ups).

@MichaelPower Thanks very much! But the font for the word “Premium” should be Calibre and needed to align with the corporate logo, so here’s my own version of the PTV+ Premium logos.

These rebrands are very cool, but you could maybe rename some of the channels (i.e. the ones that are the same as ATV, but again, your call)

I have some suggestions if you’d like them:

  • Flix → Screen (maybe a bit more movies even, so the name makes sense)
  • Smash → Mate? Xtra?
  • Chic → Love? Viva?

Again, it’s your call in the end, just some little suggestions. Always love the work mate, you’re doing a great job!

MAJOR REBRANDING UPDATE

Last time, I had to give PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) a fresh new look and feel by having new channel names.

However, it appears that some of the channels (i.e. the ones that were the same as Aotearoa Television, or ATV, which was created by @Kathryn_Milin) had to be renamed, according to @McMuffinMan17.

Shake (formerly PTV2 and, later, Flix) is PTV Network’s pure entertainment channel for 18-39 year olds and broadcasts a lineup of engaging dramas, comedy and reality shows, as well as hit movies. The channel is also the free-to-air home of the Warriors (NRL), the Breakers (NBL), the mighty Bathurst 1000 and the Auckland SuperSprint, plus the latest WWE Wrestling action fresh off the satellite from the States.

Turbo (formerly PTV4 and, later, Smash) is PTV Network’s male-skewed entertainment channel and offers premium sport, premium factual and scripted programmes and action-packed movies, along with action and adventure programming with particular appeal to men 25-54. For the bigger events in PTV Network’s sporting calendar, such as the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, Turbo supports One’s own coverage, through the PTV Sport team, by offering viewers coverage of alternative sports and events.

Viva (formerly PTV5 and, later, Chic) is PTV Network’s female-skewed entertainment channel. Viva is ‘the home of guilty pleasures, glamour and fame’, but there’s more to life than just reality shows. The channel offers a range of programming with particular appeal to women 25-54 - such as ‘true crime’ documentaries, factual shows, talk shows, dramas and movies - and has firmly established itself as the free-to-air home of netball with the Silver Ferns and the ANZ Premiership.

All the other PTV Network channels - including One, Gem, Home and Max - and their names will remain unchanged. However, as I’ve mentioned here previously, there’s another new channel - PTV News 24.

PTV News 24 is PTV Network’s 24-hour news and information channel. It regularly simulcasts live news bulletins as they are shown on One, and broadcasts ‘News 24 exclusive’ bulletins at 5pm (weekends), 5.30pm (weeknights) and 9pm (nightly). The remaining programming on the channel serves as a replay service of the most recent news, sport and weather bulletins from the PTV News team, same-day broadcasts of international news content from CBS and Channel 4 (ITN), and ‘filler’ programmes such as ‘news headlines’. The channel also airs the latest and breaking news from New Zealand and around the world.

I apologise to you both for any incovenience caused.
