What singers would you have at PTV Christmas Show? Local Artists or globally known kiwi artists?
Anyway that is great and I’d be tuning in :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

For The PTV Christmas Show it will be devoted to local artists and amongst them will be Ella Monnery, Vince Harder, Lavina Williams, Tom Batchelor, Ali Harper and Michael Murphy - all of whom will be accompanied by musical director Dixon Nacey and his studio band.

There will be jolly numbers and classic Christmas carols, plus appearances by the PTV Network Mascots, special guests Jason Kerrison and Annie Crummer, and, of course, Santa Claus. Live music will be complemented with celebrity interviews, featuring personalities from PTV Network’s programmes.

It is intended that Mike Puru and Jess Tyson will host the two-hour variety show, which will be pre-recorded and suitable for broadcast on Christmas Eve in the 7.30-9.30pm slot.

REGIONAL NEWS

To align with Britain’s ITV (in real life) I have had to make the decision to discontinue PTV Network’s regional news programme titles in favour of more generic branding under the PTV News title with the region listed as the subheading.

PTV News North, broadcasting from Auckland, will cover an area that stretches from the Far North through to the Bombay Hills and Port Waikato in the south.

PTV News Waikato & Bay of Plenty, broadcasting from PTV Network’s brand new Hamilton studios, will cover an area that stretches from the Bombay Hills and Port Waikato in the north down to the Kaimai Ranges and Mt Ruapehu in the south, and from the Coromandel Peninsula in the west to Cape Runaway in the east.

PTV News Central, broadcasting from Wellington, will cover not only the wider Wellington area but the lower half of the North Island (just south of the Kaimai Ranges and Mt Ruapehu), the upper half of the South Island (including Nelson and Marlborough) and the West Coast (including Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika).

PTV News Canterbury, broadcasting from Christchurch, will cover the heart of the Canterbury region and its people.

PTV News South, broadcasting from Dunedin, will be devoted to the Otago and Southland regions - just south of the Waitaki River.

Each regional service will continue to air on PTV1 five days a week, Monday to Friday.

Three short bulletins will be broadcast during PTV News Today at around 6.27am, 7.27am and 8.27am with a five-minute lunchtime bulletin at 12.30pm (following Midday) and a 10-minute afternoon bulletin at 3.30pm. The main half hour programme will air at 6pm (prior to PTV National News) with a 10-minute late bulletin at around 11pm, right after Nightline.

The regional services will continue to be funded through NZ On Air and drawn on the resources of the PTV News newsroom. There will be journalists and camera crews based at PTV Network’s Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin bureaus and at branch offices spread throughout the country, from Whangarei to Invercargill.

On Tuesdays at around 11.10pm, Waikato/Bay of Plenty’s Coast to Coast People will be rebranded as Coast to Coast (the former regional news programme title).

@Kathryn_Milin @LiamP @McMuffinMan17 @Biscuit45 @2265MHZ @TBoy @AK_NEWS @MichaelPower @Leotv What do you think of the inspirations by ITV (UK) when it comes to regional news?

@MichaelPower @TBoy @McMuffinMan17 Thank you all for your replies.

With PTV Network’s commitment to providing regional New Zealand with combined local and national news coverage, I have put together the quantities of reporters and camera crews across different locations. Many of them are the same people as Newshub (in real life), but others are poached from RNZ, TVNZ and other New Zealand sources as part of my intention.

Whangarei: 2 reporters + 1 camera crew
Auckland: 8 reporters + 4 camera crews
Hamilton: 6 reporters + 3 camera crews
Tauranga: 4 reporters + 2 camera crews
Whakatane: 2 reporters + 1 camera crew
Rotorua: 2 reporters + 1 camera crew
Taupo: 2 reporters + 1 camera crew
Gisborne: 2 reporters + 1 camera crew
Hastings: 4 reporters + 2 camera crews
New Plymouth: 2 reporters + 1 camera crew
Palmerston North: 4 reporters + 2 camera crews
Wellington: 8 reporters + 4 camera crews
Nelson: 2 reporters + 1 camera crew
Greymouth: 2 reporters + 1 camera crew
Christchurch: 6 reporters + 3 camera crews
Timaru: 2 reporters + 1 camera crew
Queenstown: 2 reporters + 1 camera crew
Dunedin: 6 reporters + 3 camera crews
Invercargill: 4 reporters + 2 camera crews

REGIONAL NEWS

The regional services are drawn on the PTV News newsroom and produced by PTV Network’s owned-and-operated (O&O) stations in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, with funding from NZ On Air. I recommend that NZ On Air is required because it supports multi-platform news and information content serving regional audiences. Without NZ On Air, the regional services will not be made possible.

As I’ve mentioned here previously, PTV News North will cover an area that stretches from the Far North through to the Bombay Hills and Port Waikato in the south. Its Auckland base (where PTV News North and PTV Network’s national news bulletins and programmes are produced) will be staffed by eight reporters and four camera crews, and in Whangarei there will be just two reporters and one camera operator.

PTV News Waikato & Bay of Plenty will be devoted to both the Waikato and Bay of Plenty (as the title suggests) and in the main Hamilton newsroom, we’ll have six reporters and three camera crews. They will put together the daily news bulletins on weekdays, and the weekly current affairs programme Coast to Coast (formerly Coast to Coast People) on Tuesday nights. We’ll also have four reporters and two camera crews out of Tauranga, and there will be two reporters and one camera operator each in Rotorua, Taupo and Whakatane.

PTV News Central, as I said before, will cover the lower half of the North Island, the upper half of the South Island and the West Coast. In Wellington (where PTV News Central is produced), there will be a team of eight reporters and four camera crews. Its Hastings and Palmerston North newsrooms will be staffed by four reporters and two camera crews each, and there will be two reporters and one camera operator each in Gisborne, New Plymouth, Nelson and Greymouth.

PTV News Canterbury, as the title suggests, will be devoted to Canterbury and its people and broadcast from Christchurch. There will be six reporters and three camera crews, plus two reporters and one camera operator based permanently in Timaru. They will work hard to produce daily news bulletins on weekdays and a weekly current affairs programme, Yardley, on Tuesday nights with Christchurch broadcaster Mike Yardley as host.

PTV News South will cover major news stories and issues from around the Otago and Southland, broadcasting from its Dunedin base. There will be a team of six reporters and three camera crews, all of whom will be based in Dunedin. Our Invercargill newsroom will have four reporters and two camera crews, and in Queenstown there will be two reporters and one camera operator.

All region specific reporters and camera crews, across five regions, will work hard to produce 25 half hour bulletins (6pm) and 30 short bulletins (morning, lunchtime, afternoon and late night) each week.

NATIONAL NEWS

PTV Network’s national news bulletins and programmes will feature local and regional stories that have national importance, as localised regional news bulletins are never broadcast nationally. These are taken from the local O&O and fed via satellite or by fibre links to the Auckland news centre for insertion into the live broadcast. On weekends, the local O&Os will produce both local and national news coverage for broadcast in PTV Weekend News.

PTV News bulletins and programmes will air nationwide on PTV1 seven days a week:

  • PTV News Today - weekdays 6-9am (rolling 30 min bulletins)
  • Midday - weekdays at noon (30 min)
  • PTV News: First at 4.30 - weekdays at 4.30pm (30 min)
  • PTV National News - weeknights at 6.30pm (30 min)
  • Nightline - weeknights at 10.30pm approx (30 min)
  • PTV Weekend News - weekends at noon (5 min), 6pm (30 min) and 10.30pm approx (15 min)

What do you think?

This is Great! But why is it only screened in Waikato and Bay of Plenty?

@Kathryn_Milin Because it’s a local (region specific) programme rather than a networked programme, and it’s like going back to the 1970s where, in Melbourne, Channel Seven had screened a ‘Saturday night live’ variety show called “Penthouse Club”.

The new Hamilton studios - located at Northgate Business Park, just 8 km north of central Hamilton - will play host to localised regional programming as well as Trackside (on behalf of the TAB). It encompasses two studios - Studio 1 (240 sq/m of space and up to 5 cameras) and Studio 2 (120 sq/m of space and up to 4 cameras) - which will be available for hire. Each studio will have its own HD control room and cameras, and both Studios 1 & 2 will be complemented with a news studio and addtional facilities which will be permanently dedicated to Trackside and its two racing channels.

SUNDAY MORNINGS ON PTV1

Two new programmes will absorb and replace “Sunday” in PTV1’s 10am-noon slot.

PTV NEWS SUNDAY

Sunday - once a combination of current affairs, politics and the arts - has transformed itself into a weekly public affairs programme delving more into political issues.

Called PTV News Sunday, its non-commercial, live-to-air 59 minute format means the new improved public affairs programme is topical - presenting the issues as they are, as they should be or as they could be.

The new format will be based between Auckland and Wellington and comprise a mix of long-form live and occasionally pre-recorded interviews, usually conducted by co-host Corin Dann in the Wellington studio. These will be discussed in frequent live panel discussions with academics and political commentators among others. Co-host Michael Morrah will be based in the Auckland studio and introduce long-form investigations filed by PTV News reporters, as well as a review of the stories that made the headlines during the week.

PTV News Sunday will go to air each week on PTV1 at 10am. This programme will be made with the support of NZ On Air.

BUSINESS WEEK

Business Week is a Sunday morning programme for business people, presented by experienced New Zealand journalist, Rachel Smalley. She is also a strategic communications consultant and a creative and influential storyteller.

Produced in association with NBR (an online news publication aimed at the business sector with journalists based between Auckland and Wellington), Business Week will feature a review of the week’s business news, a report compiled by Australia’s Channel Seven financial reporter Gemma Acton (from 7NEWS), newsmaker interviews, and items of interest to the business sector.

Business Week will go to air Sundays on PTV1 at 11am.

THE CHAPMAN GROUP

It’s time for something slightly different as The Chapman Group, a weekly panel discussion series with host Wallace Chapman, has moved out of primetime and into Sunday mornings.

For more of the same from Wallace and the panel (Amy Adams, Jehan Casinader, Linda Clark, David Cunliffe, Peter Dunne, Chris Finlayson, Morgan Godfery, Matthew Hooton, Dr Russel Norman, Josie Pagani, Jane Patterson, Sam Sachdeva, Trish Sherson, Shane Te Pou, Ben Thomas and Julia Whaipooti are all amongst them), tune in to The Chapman Group each Sunday on PTV1 at 11.30am.

THURSDAY NIGHT LIVE

ICT (In Christchurch Tonight) has a new name and new co-hosts!

Called Thursday Night Live (TNL), the live-to-air, 90 minute variety show will go to air on PTV1 Thursdays at 9.30pm.

Jason Gunn will now be joined by Ronnie Taulafo (formerly of “What Now” fame), Stella Maris (from “What Now”) and Patrick Gower (from Newshub) as co-hosts. They will introduce a lively mix of comedy, celebrity interviews, games, trivia and music, featuring a lineup of some of the finest musical and variety acts in the country.

Reflecting an understated, laid back, New Zealand attitude, TNL will be broadcast live each week from two different locations. Jason, Ronnie and Stella will be based in the Christchurch studio while Paddy goes on the road to a different pub (à la “Back Benches”), and there will be live crosses throughout the show. Occasionally, Stella will join Paddy on the road instead of the Christchurch studio.

An additional feature of TNL is the interactive ‘prize wheel’ segment, similar to Don’s Wheel from “The Don Lane Show” and IMT Wheel from “In Melbourne Tonight (IMT)” (in Australia). Each week, one member of the Christchurch studio audience and one lucky viewer will be given the chance to win one of the 25 major prizes on offer. Occasionally, the wheel will go on the road and one member of the pub audience (instead of the Christchurch studio audience) will be given the chance to win.

The theme song for TNL will be a cover version of “Good Time” (originally sung by American electronica project Owl City and Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen). That cover will be sung by HALO, an Auckland based 5-7 professional band; Sharon Emirali and “NZ Idol” finalists Michael Murphy and Becks Wright are amongst them.

@TV4 @Biscuit45 @McMuffinMan17 @LiamP What do you think of the idea of a live variety show with Jase the Ace, a couple of familiars from “What Now” and Paddy Gower? I describe Thursday Night Live as the nighttime version of “What Now”… with plenty of adult-oriented entertainment because of its 9.30pm slot!

@TBoy Here’s a mock advertisement promoting PTV Network’s weekly variety show - Thursday Night Live.

Bluebird Foods will sponsor Thursday Night Live - featuring comedy, celebrity interviews, games, trivia and live music. There will also be live crosses to a different pub each week (à la “Back Benches”), where customers present at the pub are given the chance to see themselves on television. The live crosses will include interviews with the locals and visiting personalities, and a weekly pub quiz. Plus the TNL Wheel, as mentioned earlier, with major prizes to be won in the Christchurch studio or at the pub.

The show will have a party atmosphere (as seen in the mock advertisement) and we will invite viewers having parties at home to either write to us, email us or get in touch with us via social media (Facebook or Instagram). We will have a telephone link with some of them and we’ll send them champagnes, Bluebird chips, Whittaker’s chocolates and other gift hampers.

Your hosts, as also mentioned earlier, will be Jason Gunn, Ronnie Taulafo, Stella Maris and Patrick Gower.

Any comments?

Here’s a mock advertisement promoting PTV Network’s late night news and current affairs programme - Nightline.

Described as a television equivalent of RNZ’s “Checkpoint”, with a dash of “Eye Witness News” from the old TVNZ era, Nightline screens weeknights at around 10.30pm on PTV1 (subject to scheduling) with 30 minutes in duration.

Nightline has all the major stories, but it’s not just be a wrap of the day’s news. It has a broader current affairs lens and gives its viewers a deeper look at what has happened during the day and what is likely to happen overnight as the Northern Hemisphere wakes up, as well as in-depth investigations into the issues that are relevant to us as New Zealanders.

The late bulletin also includes a preview of the headlines that will appear in the major newspapers the next day, and a detailed national weather forecast. On Fridays, sports news and a preview of the weekend’s sport are featured.

For breaking news and other events, like the annual budgets, Nightline will extend to an hour. At the same time, PTV National News will extend to 45 minutes and screen at 6.15pm (rather than 6.30pm) with the regional news (at 6pm) being reduced to 15 minutes in duration.

Any comments? @McMuffinMan17 @Biscuit45 @LiamP @Kathryn_Milin @TV4 @TBoy
