PTV Network New Zealand & TalkNZ (Patrick Te Pou Broadcasting Ltd)

@LiamP I describe it as a New Zealand equivalent of a television news channel from Ireland called RTÉ News, and that’s the answer.

Here are the facts, based on my memory.

The RTÉ News channel launched as RTÉ News Now available exclusively online in June 2008. Within two years it became a free-to-air channel on Saorview (i.e. an Irish equivalent of Freeview and the Irish word ‘Saor’ means free). RTÉ News Now was renamed RTÉ News in August 2020. The channel is virtually commercial free, although both RTÉ One and RTÉ2 carry advertising.

According to the RTÉ News channel’s Wikipedia page, the channel regularly simulcasts live news bulletins and current affairs programmes as they are broadcast on RTÉ One, and also that of the children’s news programme RTÉ News2Day which airs on RTÉ2. The remaining programming on the channel serves as a replay service of the most recent news, sport and weather bulletins, the streaming of raw feeds of breaking news stories and ‘filler’ programmes such as ‘news headlines’. The channel also airs the latest and breaking news stories from Ireland and around the world.

The Republic of Ireland, like New Zealand, is a small country with a population of over 4.9 million (compared to New Zealand with over 4.8 million). If you combine the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom and has a population of about 1.8 million, you have a combined population of around 6.7 million.

As mentioned before, I created PTV News 24 as an equivalent of the RTÉ News channel.

CHANGES TO PTV NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS PROGRAMMING

@AK_NEWS @LiamP I have some further changes to PTV News and Current Affairs programming.

PTV NEWS TODAY

PTV News Today, PTV Network’s early morning news programme, will now run from 6.30-9am Monday to Friday. Viewers will wake up to rolling bulletins of the morning’s national and international news, sport, business and weather information every half hour from 6.30am. Wendy Petrie will continue to present PTV News Today, with Ollie Ritchie presenting regular sports updates.

At 6am there will be a new early morning programme devoted to business and finance. Called Business Today, the new programme will feature the latest business, economic and financial news, market updates and interviews with the key newsmakers in the business world.

Business Today will be presented by veteran financial journalist, Owen Poland.

Regular business updates will continue to be featured on PTV News Today at around 6.45am, 7.15am and 8.15am.

PTV LOCAL NEWS

PTV Local News will move to the earlier timeslot of 5.40pm as a lead-in to PTV National News (at the new time of 6pm). These 20 minute regional bulletins will be produced at PTV Network’s studios in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

The Auckland studio will produce three separate bulletins for the upper North Island: a combined Auckland/Northland bulletin, a Waikato bulletin and a Bay of Plenty bulletin. All three bulletins will be presented by Wilhelmina Shrimpton.

The Wellington studio will produce two separate bulletins: one serving the central North Island (i.e. Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki and Manawatu/Whanganui) and the other for the wider Wellington region, the upper half of the South Island (i.e. Nelson/Tasman and Marlborough) and the West Coast. Both bulletins will be presented by Katrina Bennett (from Newstalk ZB; replacing Mike Wesley-Smith).

In Christchurch, Anastasia Hedge (also from Newstalk ZB; replacing Ali Pugh) and have the Canterbury region covered, and Melissa Barton (from 39 Southern Television) will present the Otago/Southland edition of PTV Local News from Dunedin (replacing Dominic George).

On Sundays, there will be a weekly ‘News Review’ type programme at 11am (followed by Meet the Press at 11.30am). Called Grassroots Sunday and presented in a non-commercial format (29 minutes in length), this is a compilation of local and regional news stories that have aired on PTV Local News bulletins in the last seven days.

The Cartoon Network version of The Tom and Jerry Show (S2-5; 7 minutes per episode) will screen on PTV1 at 5pm, followed by the remake of the iconic New Zealand game show Wheel of Fortune (hosted by Matt Gibb and Diamond Langi) at 5.10pm.

PTV NATIONAL NEWS

PTV National News will now screen seven nights a week at 6pm. The nightly 30 minute bulletin will offer audiences a mix of national and international news, sport and weather and will continue to be produced and broadcast live from PTV Network’s Auckland headquarters.

The weeknight bulletin will continue to be anchored by Daniel Faitaua, a journalist with over 10 years experience in news and current affairs reporting, with Tom McRae anchoring the weekend news. The role of sports anchor will continue to be shared by Andrew Gourdie and Jeff McTainsh, with Jessica Tyson and Lucy Brock retaining their roles as weather presenters.

As the flagship of the PTV News brand, PTV National News will continue to cover the important news of the day from New Zealand and around the world. The news is drawn on the resources of the PTV News newsroom with journalists and camera crews spread throughout New Zealand, as well as international sources via satellite.

Foreign correspondents are also appointed in order to give a New Zealand perspective on international news stories as they break.

Emma Cropper (from Newshub, in real life) will be based in Sydney and become PTV Network’s Australia correspondent. Ben Irwin (a former Newshub journalist now at Al Jazeera) will be based in London and become Europe correspondent, and Zac Fleming (a New Zealand journalist now based in New York) will be joining the PTV News newsroom as our US correspondent.

Charlotte Bellis, Simon Hampton and Wayne Hay will also serve as overseas contributors to PTV News and Current Affairs.

A CURRENT AFFAIR

PTV National News will be followed by A Current Affair, PTV Network’s nightly current affairs programme, at the new time of 6.30pm.

Presented by Ryan Bridge, A Current Affair will continue to highlight the issues of importance to us as New Zealanders. It covers the big events of the moment, runs investigations, delivers stories that are immediately useful and combines pre-recorded items with live interviews and panels, where invited guests discuss topical events and issues live in the studio.

Straight after A Current Affair, the remake of the iconic New Zealand quiz show Sale of the Century (hosted by Mike Puru and Evana Corric) will screen at 7pm.

I would like to apologise to you all for any inconvenience caused but watch this space for more changes to programming on PTV1 and other PTV Network channels.

Why not air Wheel of Fortune for 40 mins from 5pm?

@fournews Hrm. No plans - Wheel of Fortune, like other early evening game shows in ‘classic’ formats, is usually half an hour in duration. I chose the Cartoon Network version of “The Tom and Jerry Show” as a 10 minute lead-in to Wheel of Fortune.

I’m getting a severe case of deja vu right now.

Sounds good Paddy!

Could you in future highlight or something what the changes actually are. It’s a bit difficult to keep up sometimes.

CHRIS LYNCH

@AK_NEWS @LiamP Chris Lynch has been at Newstalk ZB for the past nine years. According to an article, by Stuff’s Martin Van Beynen, he has decided to leave ZB after having contractual issues with NZME, which owns and operates Newstalk ZB.

As founder and owner of PTV Network New Zealand, I am looking at the possibility of poaching Chris Lynch from Newstalk ZB. According to his website, chrislynchmedia.com, is an award-winning multimedia broadcaster and former television news and current affairs producer. He is also a professional cameraman and editor.

As an experienced video content producer, he was the only radio host in New Zealand who produced video news content for the station’s commercial clients and has worked in network television, covering significant news stories from around the world.

Chris has interviewed world leaders from the head of the United Nations to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, and has covered events of importance like the Christchurch mosque attacks.

Chris is passionate about local and global affairs and if PTV Network (as a fictional broadcaster) does become a reality, I’ll be more than happy to have him on board. He will bring with him a wealth of experience and knowledge to my new media venture.

On PTV Radio, Chris will host the South Island edition of “Morning Talk” from 9am-12pm weekdays (on all South Island frequencies, including Christchurch’s) and Mark Sainsbury will host the North Island’s. Each edition of “Morning Talk” will include a mix of open-line talkback and interviews with newsmakers and leaders from every major political party including the Prime Minister.

On PTV1, Chris will host a regional current affairs programme called “Lynched”. Screening in a late night slot on Tuesdays (straight after “Nightline”), Lynched is a lively, provocative and unpredictable blend of happenings and issues which interest and concern Cantabrians. This programme will be pre-recorded and combine field items, filed by PTV News journalists based in Christchurch, with studio interviews.

A regional current affairs programme for Waikato and Bay of Plenty viewers, in place of Lynched (for viewers in the Canterbury region), is in the pipeline and will screen in the same Tuesday night slot as Lynched.

Thanks for the heads up, @foxyrover.

REGIONAL NEWS ON PTV NETWORK

@AK_NEWS @LiamP As you have probably noticed, “PTV Local News” is getting a complete makeover.

The 20-minute duration and format (5.40-6pm) will remain, but PTV Local News will be broadcast from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin under different titles: Look North, Spotlight, Calendar and Points South.

The regional services will be produced by PTV News and Current Affairs with funding from NZ On Air, and drawn on the resources of the PTV News newsroom. Each service will contain a blend of the day’s news, current affairs and magazine-style features from across any one of the four regions, reflecting community life and people-to-people involvement.

Look North will cover news from the regions across the upper half of the North Island, i.e. Northland, Auckland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty. The Look North team will cover local people, local issues and bring a local perspective to the day’s events. Live from PTV Network’s Auckland studio, Look North will be presented by Wilhelmina Shrimpton.

Spotlight will be coming to you live from PTV Network’s Wellington studio and presented by Katrina Bennett (from Newstalk ZB). Spotlight is a nightly regional news programme that covers the important news of the day from the lower half of the North Island, the upper half of the South Island and the West Coast.

Calendar is PTV Network’s nightly programme of regional news for the Canterbury region, presented live from Christchurch by Anastasia Hedge (from Newstalk ZB).

Points South is an Otago/Southland digest of the day’s news, presented from PTV Network’s Dunedin studio by Melissa Barton (from 39 Southern Television).

As I said before, the regional news will be followed at 6pm by PTV National News. I apologise to you all for any inconvenience caused.

@foxyrover In the 1980s we had four regional news programmes in magazine-style formats rather than standard news bulletins. During the TVNZ era we had Top Half (Auckland), Today Tonight (Wellington), The Mainland Touch (Christchurch) and 7.30 South (Dunedin).

When they first started, they were shown in the 7.30pm slot and ran for half an hour. In 1982 the regionals moved into the 6.30-7.30pm news hour and ran for about 20 minutes. At the same time, Dunedin’s 7.30 South was rebranded as “The South Tonight”.

Top Half and Today Tonight were axed by TVNZ in 1989 and within the next year, The Mainland Touch and The South Tonight followed.

At PTV Network New Zealand, my intention is to bring back the regional news based on the old TVNZ days. As I said before, the format of PTV Local News (at 5.40-6pm) would remain the same but the names have been changed in order to reflect the ones used by the BBC and ITV in the UK.

  • Look North (Auckland): Its name was taken from the BBC’s regional services in the East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, North Midlands, North East and Cumbria areas.
  • Spotlight (Wellington): Its name was taken from the BBC’s regional services in the South West of England (i.e. Cornwall, Devon, Isles of Scilly, southern and western Somerset and western Dorset areas) and the Channel Islands.
  • Calendar (Christchurch): Its name was taken from ITV’s regional services in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, northwestern Norfolk and parts of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
  • Points South (Dunedin): Its name was loosely modelled on a regional service from the BBC called “Points West”. It covers Bristol, the majority of Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, northern and eastern Somerset & North Dorset which make up the West of England.

What do you think?

NEW CURRENT AFFAIRS SHOW FOR PTV NETWORK

@AK_NEWS PTV Network New Zealand is launching a new current affairs programme to be screened on Wednesday nights.

We are bringing back “Native Affairs” - based on Māori Television’s award-winning current affairs programme of the same name. Journalist Oriini Kaipara will front the new version, and she will be joined by John Boynton, Wena Harawira, Rewa Harriman and Leigh-Marama McLauchlan as reporters.

Each week the new-look Native Affairs team will investigate regional and national stories from a Māori perspective, and field reports will be supplemented with studio interviews and panels. This programme will be sponsored by Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (with more than 80 locations nationwide and over 50 courses on offer), and produced by the PTV News and Current Affairs department with partial funding from both NZ On Air and Te Māngai Pāho.

Native Affairs will go to air Wednesdays at 10pm on PTV1 (straight after The Chapman Group at 9.30pm).

WHEEL OF FORTUNE

@LiamP PTV Network New Zealand is bringing back “Wheel of Fortune” - one of the most popular game shows in the world.

Based on the popular game “Hangman”, three contestants compete by spinning “The Wheel” and calling out consonants for a chance to solve the puzzle and go home with cash and prizes. The contestant who reigns supreme at the end of the game advances to the “Golden Wheel” where they have the opportunity to add to their prize.

Hosting the new show will be Matt Gibb (well known from his Squirt and Studio 2 days), who will be joined by co-host Diamond Langi (Miss Universe New Zealand 2019).

THIS IS HOW THE GAME WORKS.

Although it will be based on the US game show of the same name, the all new Wheel of Fortune will utilise the ‘classic’ format during the Grundy/Fremantle era. (In 1981, Australia’s Grundy Organisation had purchased the rights to Merv Griffin’s US game show “Wheel of Fortune” and created a faithful reproduction of the US series, as they had done with many other game shows. Nowadays, the format is owned and produced by Sony Pictures Television and distributed by CBS Media Ventures.)

Before the recording of the all new Wheel of Fortune begins, the contestants draw numbers to determine their positions on stage. There are four rounds and the show uses a Flip-Up puzzle (based on the US version; see below) to determine control of the board to start the first and fourth round, and among which the contestant clockwise will begin the next round and so on (in order, red, yellow, blue and red - all from a viewer’s perspective).

CATEGORIES
The game uses a wide variety of categories for its puzzles. Some are generic, such as “PLACE” or “THING”. Puzzles frequently refer to popular culture or common items encountered in everyday life, such as “BEFORE AND AFTER”, “STAR AND TITLE”, “WHERE ARE WE?” and so on. Other categories include “BUILDING”, “LIVING THINGS”, “TRUE OR FALSE?,” “EVENT” and “PHRASE”.

SPINNING THE WHEEL
According to Wikipedia, the Wheel has 96 pegs with 24 spaces that are each four pegs wide. These spaces represent cash values (in multiples of 5 instead of 50 in the US version), including one silver coloured “Top Dollar” wedge, prizes and penalty spaces, three strategic elements for use in the game.

A contestant who does not land on a penalty space asks for a consonant. If it is not in the puzzle, play proceeds to the next contestant. If the letter appears in the puzzle, the hostess reveals all instances of the letter and the amount spun up is added to his/her score. Unlike the US version, however, the amount of money won is a flat rate and not multiplied by the number of instances of the letter. The only exception is when the red mystery letter appears, which doubles the amount spun up when called. Calling a letter that has already been called results in the loss of one’s turn.

A “used letter board” is positioned off screen for the contestants to see to aid in their guesses. All descriptions of contestants being credited with cash or prizes in the remainder of this article assume that the contestant calls a consonant which appears in the puzzle. A contestant who lands on a value is credited with that amount.

Below are the Wheel layouts loosely based on the Australian version.

Rounds 2-3 layout (mystery wedges and a single Bankrupt space appear in Round 2 only; see below). Image courtesy of photobucket.com.

Round 4 layout. Image courtesy of photobucket.com.

"TOP DOLLAR" VALUES
The “Top Dollar” values are $750 (for round one), $1,500 (for rounds two and three) and $2,500 (for round four).

BUYING A VOWEL
The contestant who has sufficient banked cash during the current round may choose to buy a vowel prior to spinning the Wheel. The cost of the vowel, $50, is deducted from the contestant’s score and all instances of the requested vowel in the puzzle are revealed, if any. The contestant’s score is reduced by a flat $50. If the purchased vowel is not in the puzzle, the contestant loses their turn in addition to the aforementioned cost. Multiple vowels may be purchased until either the supply of vowels is exhausted or the contestant’s bank falls below $50; after which the contestant either spins the wheel or tries to solve the puzzle.

SPECIAL FEATURES
There are some special features in the all new Wheel of Fortune.

  • FLIP-UP PUZZLES: These give control of the Wheel to whoever solves the puzzle, but do not add any money to the contestant’s score, The Flip-Up before the second round is a Prize Puzzle, awarding a prize related to the puzzle.
  • FREE SPIN: Available only in round one, the Free Spin wedge allows a contestant to continue his or her turn in the event of solving a puzzle incorrectly, selecting a letter that is not in the puzzle, or landing on Bankrupt or Lose a Turn. A Free Spin is a golden token with black text, which is placed at the top of a wedge (as shown in the round one layout; see above). Upon spinning it up, the Free Spin is awarded first, and then a letter is called for the dollar amount that the “Free Spin” is placed upon. If the letter called is not in the puzzle, the contestant can use it straightaway to retain control or save it for later.
  • BANKRUPT: A black Bankrupt space ends a contestant’s turn and loses his/her money currently earned for the round. Any money won from a prior round is not affected by it. The Bankrupt space appears once in rounds one and two, and twice in rounds three and four.
  • LOSE A TURN: Ends a contestant’s turn without affecting their current round’s winnings. The Lose a Turn space appears once in rounds one, two and three, and twice in round four.
  • RED MYSTERY LETTER: A consonant that appears in red on the puzzle board doubles the money awarded for choosing that letter.
  • SURPRISE WEDGE: A Surprise wedge features a mystery prize won by the contestant who picks up the wedge and solves the puzzle on the same round. The Surprise wedge appears on a sporadic basis.
  • MYSTERY WEDGES (SPACE): Round two features two $500 spaces marked with a stylised question mark placed on the Wheel. If a contestant lands on landed on one of these mystery wedges and correctly guesses a letter in the puzzle, said contestant is given an option to risk their current winnings by ‘flipping’ the mystery wedge (contains either a Bankrupt or a special prize, which will be awarded if the contestant solves the puzzle), or took a buyout with a $500 per consonant. After one mystery wedge has been flipped, the remaining wedge functions as a regular $500 space.

SOLVING A PUZZLE
Upon solving a puzzle, a contestant can choose choose one of three prizes offered to him/her.

SPEED ROUND (FINAL SPIN)
At some point, when time is running short, a bell rings to indicate the Final Spin of the Wheel.

The host pins the spins the Wheel and all remaining consonants in the puzzle are worth the value of the spin. The contestant in control has his/her arrow determine the round’s value, compared to the red player’s podium on the US version. The contestants take turns calling one letter each including vowels (no cost/value). If the called letter appears in the puzzle, the player has five seconds after the hostess stops moving to try to solve the puzzle. If a contestant has a Free Spin, he/she can still use it to keep her turn in the speed-up round. Unlike the previous rounds, contestants may give multiple guesses within the time limit.

If a penalty space is landed, the host spins again until a dollar amount is spun.

THE GOLDEN WHEEL (BONUS ROUND)

The Golden Wheel, with major prizes replacing dollar values. Image courtesy of DeviantArt.

The day’s champion is given a chance to win one of several major prizes. The dollar values on the Wheel are replaced with the major prizes, two of which being the car. This special Wheel is also known as “The Golden Wheel” (see above).

The contestant is given help with the final puzzle in the form of consonants and vowels; they start with two consonants and one vowel to start with, plus an additional consonant for every $2,000 scored in the main game. Theoretically, enough money ($38,000) can be earned so as to call every consonant.

The winning contestant then gets 10 seconds to solve the puzzle and win the prize. He/she can make many guesses during the time limit so long it does not expire. If the champ is unable to solve the puzzle in the bonus round, any score will carry over to the next show; however, once a major prize is won, the value is reset back to zero.

CELEBRITY WHEEL OF FORTUNE

In addition, there will be a companion show on Saturday nights where three celebrities are pitted against each other by spinning the Wheel - Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.

Celebrity Wheel of Fortune will see different celebrities playing for home viewers, with those viewers earning the prizes and total of the amounts their winning celebrity spun during the game in actual cash.

To be part of that show, viewers will need to send in their contact details, along with four consonants and a vowel, via email or post although self-addressed stamped envelopes are required. By post, they will write their contact details (i.e. name, address and phone number) on the back of their envelopes, along with four consonants and one vowel. By email, they will include their contact details (i.e. name, address, phone number and email address), four consonants, one vowel and the words “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” in the subject line.

I scheduled Wheel of Fortune at 5.10-5.40pm every weeknight on PTV1, with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune on Saturday nights (right after the remake of It’s in the Bag).

@foxyrover @LiamP @AK_NEWS I created a series of production endboards for PTV Network New Zealand (Patrick Te Pou Enterprises Ltd) using Microsoft PowerPoint. I saved these as PNG files and then stitched them together into 10-second idents using Movie Maker as motion graphics software, such as Adobe After Effects, is expensive.

The production endboards can be seen in the form of a 60-second compilation on my YouTube channel.

There are six endboards:

  • “A PTV Network Production”. For New Zealand programmes made in-house by PTV Network New Zealand.
  • “A PTV Network Production; format licensed by Fremantle”. For New Zealand programmes made in-house by PTV Network New Zealand under licence from Fremantle, which has an outstanding international network of production teams, companies and labels in over 30 countries worldwide. Examples of overseas formats licensed by Fremantle include Sale of the Century (Grundy), The Price Is Right (Grundy) and Give Us a Clue (Thames).
  • “A PTV Network Production; format licensed by CBS Media Ventures / Sony Pictures Television Studios”. PTV Network New Zealand produces the remake of Wheel of Fortune under licence from the format’s owners, although it is based on the US game show of the same name.
  • “A Commissioned Independent Production”. For New Zealand programmes that are commissioned from independent producers by PTV Network’s Commissioning Department. It is intended that - with the exception of news and current affairs programmes and live sporting events - around 70% of the local programmes are made by independent producers.
  • “A PTV Network Presentation”. For New Zealand programmes made by PTV Network’s Presentation Department.
  • For region specific programmes made at PTV Network’s studios in Auckland, Tauranga (Waikato/Bay of Plenty), Wellington, Christchurch or Dunedin for broadcast in a specific region. An example of this is Lynched, a weekly regional current affairs programme for Christchurch hosted by Chris Lynch; it offers a lively, provocative and unpredictable mix of happenings and issues which interest and concern Cantabrians.

What do you think of the production endboards (as seen on YouTube)?
