PTV RADIO UPDATE

As I’ve mentioned here previously, PTV Radio is a joint venture between PTV Network New Zealand and MediaWorks, the leading radio network in the country with 2.4 million listeners every week.

I describe PTV Radio as ‘New Zealand’s newest commercial news talk station - the station New Zealanders turn to for breaking news, opinions and the latest information on the stories that matter’. As well as drawing on the resources of PTV Network’s News and Current Affairs department, PTV Radio will play host to some of the best known personalities on talk radio in the country.

PTV Radio’s programmes are packed with current affairs, news coverage as it happens, interviews with newsmakers and open-line talkback on issues that are important to us as New Zealanders. On the weekends, listeners will be able to enjoy an array of magazine-style features covering DIY, gardening, motoring, pets, real estate, technology, travel and other lifestyle interests.

Although it will be a replacement for Magic Talk - which, in real life, is part of the Magic radio network through MediaWorks and has been on air since 2019 - PTV Radio will broadcast on its new set of AM and FM frequencies, including:

  • former TAB Trackside Radio frequencies (which, in real life, are owned by the TAB until 2031) except the Wairarapa, Kapiti Coast, Oamaru and Queenstown;
  • current Magic frequencies (FM) in Tauranga, Rotorua, Hawke’s Bay, Whanganui, Manawatu, Wairarapa, Kapiti Coast, Wellington, Nelson, Blenheim, Timaru, Oamaru, Queenstown, Dunedin and Southland;
  • current The Sound frequencies in Rodney and Kurow;
  • the 95.8FM frequency in Auckland (acquired from NZME); and
  • newly engineered FM frequencies in the Waikato, Thames, Reporoa, Gisborne, Christchurch, Ashburton and the Mackenzie Country (Tekapo/Twizel).

Below is a list of proposed PTV Radio frequencies (click to enlarge).

It is intended that PTV Radio’s regular programming (i.e. news, current affairs, open-line talkback and weekend lifestyle content) will be broadcast on a network of FM frequencies, according to the maps.

PTV Radio’s AM network - in Auckland, Waikato, Western Bay of Plenty (Tauranga and Rotorua), Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, South Canterbury (Ashburton and Timaru), Dunedin and Southland - will feature live sport commentary, dedicated sports shows and special services for racing fans (i.e. race scratchings and live commentary of all New Zealand races) in the form of breakaway programming at certain times during the week… especially weekends.

@AK_NEWS’s WTV is preparing to launch a radio network as a competitor to PTV Radio. I mean, in real life, there are lots of music radio brands that are owned by NZME (i.e. ZM, Flava, Radio Hauraki, The Hits, Coast, Gold and Hokonui) and MediaWorks (i.e. Mai, The Edge, George FM, More FM, The Breeze, The Rock, The Sound and Magic), and we already have a talk radio network through NZME (Newstalk ZB).

It is unlikely that WTV on Radio broadcasts on a network of FM frequencies (102FM) across New Zealand as (in real life) they are usually reserved for RNZ’s new youth radio service, similar to the ABC’s Triple J from Australia. Last year the Broadcasting Minister, Kris Faafoi, announced that, due to the Covid-19 situation, RNZ’s youth radio service had been ‘put to one side’ and RNZ itself would concentrate more on news and current affairs programming.

“Because RNZ is in the position that most media companies are in, they decided during the Covid experience to put to one side their plans around their youth music network to focus on their core business of news and current affairs.” - Kris Faafoi

Back at PTV Radio I have put together a proposed line-up.

DISCLAIMER: PTV Network New Zealand (Patrick Te Pou Enterprises Ltd) is a fictional broadcaster and will not broadcast to New Zealand, as it is fictitious and imaginary. In real life, NZME fully owns the 95.8FM frequency in Auckland, which is used by Flava, and TAB NZ owns the AM and FM frequencies (as shown in the images) until 2031 while some frequencies are currently used by other MediaWorks Radio brands and some do not yet exist. Thank you for understanding.

The fictional station on 92.4 Northland (PTV Radio Northland) would hypothetically be a regular e skip catch on the east coast of Australia during the summer.

PTV NETWORK STUDIOS (Part 1)

As I’ve mentioned here previously, PTV Network New Zealand will be headquartered at Sky’s real-life headquarters at 10 Panorama Road in Mt Wellington, Auckland.

From PTV News Today in the early morning to PTV National News, A Current Affair and Nightline in the evening - this is where it all happens. The specially designed PTV News and Current Affairs studio (i.e. the same studio as Sky Sport and the Your News Bulletin commercials) is extremely versatile.

It is intended that PTV Network’s news and current affairs programmes will be produced live to air at our Mt Wellington headquarters. A fully refurbished and state-of-the-art newsroom, a News Exchange area, news editing and graphics areas, a central technical area, a master control area, offices for current affairs programmes, sales offices and administration offices will also be based in Mt Wellington.

The Mt Wellington signals will be delivered by satellite or fibre optics to PTV Network’s national broadcast centre (i.e. the real-life NEP/TAB Trackside facility) at 60 Stanley Street in Auckland’s CBD.

The Stanley Street building (also known as ‘Broadcast Centre Auckland’) will be the network’s operations hub, where the Master Control Room is located for all national and regional feeds to be controlled. Programme and channel origination, commercial insertion, feed switching and national transmission output are delivered here.

All PTV Network owned and operated studios (i.e. not only in Auckland but Hamilton, Tauranga, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin) will have their live signals relayed here: for instance, regional programmes out of PTV Network’s Tauranga studio (plus Bay of Plenty advertising and notices) will be fed to Auckland and then transmitted via satellite or fibre optics to the Kordia and JDA towers around the Bay of Plenty region - Kopukairua (Tauranga/Western Bay of Plenty), Pukepoto (Rotorua), Putauaki/Mt Edgecumbe (Whakatane/Eastern Bay of Plenty) and so on.

Dedicated to @OnAir, @LiamP, @Leo_Puglisi6 & @AK_NEWS.

PTV NETWORK STUDIOS (Part 2)

PTV Network Studios operates from two locations in Auckland and one in Christchurch.

In Auckland, there are two:

  • 60 Stanley Street, Central Auckland (real-life NEP/TAB Trackside facility)
  • 8 Tolich Place, Henderson, West Auckland (shared with South Pacific Pictures, in real life)

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest and most cosmopolitan city, with a population of more than 1.7 million people (over 1.4 million in the urban centres), including the largest Polynesian community in the world. Situated between two spectacular natural harbours, the city and its environs brim with a range of diverse location possibilities.

If you need to shoot in Auckland, whatever kind of shoot it may be (whether you’re within the city centre or the Waitakere region), we at PTV Network Studios have the right space and the best kit and crew for you.

STANLEY STREET STUDIOS

PTV Stanley Street Studios is located next to the world-class ASB Tennis Arena and on Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway - a short 7 minute drive from Auckland’s CBD.

Our Stanley Street building encompasses four studios - three of which are available for hire.

Studio 1, for instance, is Stanley Street’s flagship studio (215m² of space and up to 5 cameras). With a technical grid, lighting rig, soundproofing, concrete floors and air conditioning, the versatility and size of Studio 1 makes it perfect for smaller scale light entertainment productions and live-to-air television shows, and it has the capacity for a studio audience.

Studio 2 (100m² of space and up to 4 cameras) is commonly used for sports
shows, magazine shows and current affairs programmes, although it is perfect for corporate video productions and commercials.

Studios A & B, with green screen capability, are the two small studios which are ideal for smaller productions and photo shoots. Stanley Street is home to the Auckland edition of PTV Local News and its main studio (Studio B) is generally dedicated to regional news for both Auckland and Northland, but Studio A is available for hire.

Our Stanley Street studios are supplemented with a makeup area with three positions, wardrobe, dressing room, guest Wi-Fi, and tea and coffee making facilities. The building also houses offices which are used as the transmission control centre for PTV Network’s owned-and-operated stations in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

WAITAKERE STUDIOS

PTV Waitakere Studios - converted from the famous Shortland Street Hospital (i.e. an existing section of a building dressed up to appear as the facade of a hospital entrance) - is located in the same building as South Pacific Pictures as a separate and different kind of purpose-built production facility, made exclusively for television.

Our new Waitakere building provides a new home for New Zealand made light entertainment on PTV Network - especially game shows, quizzes, music shows, talk/variety shows and multi-camera comedies, all filmed in front of a live studio audience. The building encompasses two large studios which can also be doubled as sound stages.

Studio 3 (500m² of space and up to 6 cameras) is progressively versatile. With a full technical grid, lighting rig, soundproofing, seamless concrete floors and air conditioning, Studio 3 is commonly used for sitcoms, sketch comedy shows and live-to-air productions, and has the capacity for a studio audience.

Studio 4 (also known as ‘the big one’) is a mecca for live shows! Fitted with quality technical specifications this is Auckland’s largest ‘live’ studio - 700m² of space and up to 9 cameras - setting the standard for studio production. Whether it’s a game show, a quiz show, a variety show or a light entertainment special, the versatility and size of Studio 4 makes it perfect for any genre of TV show and it has the capacity for a large, loud studio audience!

Our Waitakere studios are equipped with new broadcast-quality cameras and brand new control rooms with state-of-the-art audio and lighting control. The cameras and control rooms are capable of delivering live signals to PTV Network’s transmission control centre at Stanley Street. Facilities include makeup, wardrobe, dressing rooms, green rooms, production offices, car parking and a cafeteria.

CHRISTCHURCH STUDIOS

WhitebaitMedia

PTV Christchurch Studios is located in the Christchurch suburb of Addington - a short 10 minute drive from Christchurch’s CBD.

This purpose-built facility was opened in 2009 as home to WhitebaitMedia (formerly Whitebait Productions and Whitebait-TV respectively), an independent production house.

The Whitebait team - led by Janine Morrell-Gunn and her husband, media personality Jason Gunn - are well known to the New Zealand television industry as specialists in children’s, youth, family and music television (Bumble, Wannabes, What Now, Tuhono, The Erin Simpson Show, Animal Academy, Hearts in Crafts, The 4.30 Show, The Adam & Eve Show, Fanimals, Brain Busters etc).

Whitebait’s current facility in Christchurch will become the South Island base for PTV Network. It houses two television studios including one of the largest in the country at 594m².

Studio 1, Christchurch’s largest ‘live’ studio (594m² of space and up to 8 cameras), is perfect for any genre of medium or large-sized television production and has the capacity for a studio audience. Studio 2 (120m² of space and up to 4 cameras) is commonly used for regional programmes, including the Christchurch edition of PTV Local News.

Each studio is connected to an HD control room which is capable of delivering live signals to PTV Network’s Auckland based transmission control centre via satellite or fibre optics.

With chandelier lined corridors, offices for technical staff, three green rooms, a makeup room, a wardrobe room, an art department workshop and a light-filled atrium, PTV Christchurch Studios is fully equipped and also houses four Avid HD edit suites, a large motion graphics suite and two audio post suites, all operated by Whitebait’s existing post production team.

It is intended that all South Island based programmes will be produced in Christchurch. An example of this kind is The Morning Break which screens five days a week, Monday to Friday, from 8.30-10am on PTV1.

Hosted by Greg O’Connor (from TAB Trackside) and Ali Harper (an accomplished singer and entertainer), The Morning Break is a magazine-style morning show which provides its viewers with a blend of celebrity interviews, entertainment and lifestyle segments. It also includes advertorials with hosts Sue White (from The Breeze) and Jason Mac (also known as ‘J-Mac’ from The Breakfast Club on More FM).

In addition, local advertising, notices and regional news will be inserted into the Christchurch feed before it is rebroadcast to viewers in the upper South Island, i.e. the Nelson/Tasman, Marlborough, West Coast, Canterbury and South Canterbury areas.

OTHER LOCATIONS

PTV Network Studios has other studios in Hamilton, Tauranga, Palmerston North, Wellington and Dunedin which are devoted exclusively to localised editions of PTV Local News.

Our new Hamilton studios will also play host to TAB Trackside, a channel that we shoot and transmit live each day from Hamilton on behalf of the TAB.

Back in Auckland, PTV Network’s news and current affairs programmes are produced at our Panorama Road headquarters in Mt Wellington and we have an additional studio in Grafton (71 Boston Road) for PTV2’s dedicated music shows.

Here are the listings for a typical Monday on PTV1 (part of PTV Network New Zealand) and Central (formerly WTV) as fictional broadcasters.

The mock schedules were created in the style of the NZ Listener during the 1980s. I used Microsoft Publisher, and then converted from a Publisher file to a PDF file. Once it’s done, the single PDF file was converted to multiple images in PNG formats.

PTV RADIO UPDATE (Part 1)

I have something to share with you.

Rather than being a joint venture with MediaWorks (which fully owns and operates Magic Talk), I have decided that, with the assistance of RNZ, PTV Radio will be part of PTV Network New Zealand (Patrick Te Pou Enterprises Ltd) as my dream television network.

Whereas RNZ is a public-service radio broadcaster and Crown entity that was established under the Radio New Zealand Act 1995, PTV Radio will be privately owned and funded by advertising. While the television operation is based in Mt Wellington (i.e. the real-life Sky TV headquarters) and studio facilities spread throughout the city, PTV Radio will broadcast from RNZ’s Auckland base with additional radio studios in Wellington and beyond.

As I’ve mentioned both on Media Spy and on Facebook previously, PTV Radio will be a replacement for Magic Talk. In recent years, listeners of Magic Talk have been dissatisfied by the inclusion of Magic’s music playlist (i.e. ‘the greatest hits of all time’), Magic Talk’s weekend catch-ups, and the divisive views of broadcasters like Peter Williams and Sean Plunket through rightwing commentary.

As listeners need a ‘decent’ talk radio network, PTV Radio will be a competitor to Newstalk ZB (through NZME). In Auckland, Newstalk ZB has a 13.4% station share and a weekly cumulative audience of 249,900 listeners in the latest Q4-20 commercial radio survey for July to November 2020. Elsewhere, it has a 12.2% share and a weekly audience of 598,400 listeners nationwide.

In a statement via a Facebook group page, Trish Andrews - who had worked at The Radio Network (TRN) and, later, NZME for many years - loved the concept of PTV Radio (as a competitor to Newstalk ZB) and other ventures within PTV Network. Trish wished me luck and I thanked her for the kind words.

“After working for NZME and prior to that The Radio Network for many years I wish you all the very best with your plans. From a personal perspective seeing NZME treat volumes of long standing staff so terribly and exiting them without just cause or reason they deserve some strong competition finally. Do it once - do it right. Best of luck!!” - Trish Andrews

@OnAir @TV4 @nztv @theGradyConnell @Michael_Eccles What do you think? I’ll be heading up to Auckland via the InterCity bus service this coming Friday (26 March).

STOP THE PRESS!

@AK_NEWS @LiamP Instead of the ever popular Goodnight Kiwi, I have secretly put together a plan for a nightly closedown feature, which is in the pipeline.

What do you think?

Mind if I take the Goodnight Kiwi for my own then?

(Unless you want it AK, if so be my guest)

Go ahead, @LiamP! The Goodnight Kiwi (i.e. the animation, characters and music) is regarded as part of New Zealand broadcasting culture and icons of Kiwiana. I am developing my own nightly closedown feature (i.e. similar to Brahms’ lullaby from The Wiggles).

@AK_NEWS @LiamP @OnAir I’ve been in Auckland for the past week and, earlier today (2 April), I took photos of the exteriors of NEP’s Auckland studios as part of my visit.

Located at 60 Stanley Street, the NEP facility is purpose-built and encompasses two small studios and two medium-sized studios. In real life, TAB Trackside is based there.

As I’ve mentioned on Media Spy previously, it is intended that Stanley Street, through NEP, is a perfect venue for my dream television network - PTV Network New Zealand (Patrick Te Pou Enterprises Ltd).

“Whether you are an established broadcaster or looking to start up a new channel, NEP New Zealand offers an unmatched range of affordable multi-platform playout services ensuring the delivery of your entire channel while meeting your business and technical needs.”

PTV Network’s administration offices and news centre will be based at Sky’s real-life Panorama Road headquarters in Mt Wellington. News and current affairs programmes (excluding international news delivered by satellite) will be produced in a specially designed PTV News and Current Affairs studio at the Mt Wellington headquarters, and the Mt Wellington signal will be fed to Stanley Street via satellite or fibre optics for insertion into pre-scheduled programming, including commercial breaks.

STOP THE PRESS!

PTV Network’s headquarters and news centre will now be based in the real-life Discovery/Newshub building at Flower Street in Eden Terrace, Auckland.

In real life, I was introduced to all the team from Newshub the other day and watched its 4.30pm news bulletin going live to air from the studio control room at Flower Street. That’s my big highlight when it comes to great television.

After running through many building options, I have decided that, if PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) does become a reality, the Flower Street site will serve as the headquarters of PTV Network. @AK_NEWS’s newly rebranded Central Television New Zealand (trading as Central) will operate from Sky’s real-life Mt Wellington headquarters.

More to come…

PTV RADIO UPDATE

NEW WEST COAST FREQUENCY
PTV Radio can be heard across Reefton on 102.3FM. Our West Coast frequencies are: 102.1FM in Westport, 102.3FM in Reefton and 102.7FM in Greymouth and Hokitika.

As I’ve mentioned here previously, PTV Radio will be available in almost every radio market area in New Zealand via the 102FM network. Hypothetically, if you receive RNZ National on 101FM then you should be able to tune your radio to 102FM for PTV Radio - New Zealand’s newest commercial news talk station.

Below is a list of all 102FM frequencies.

Live streaming will be available on PTV Radio’s website, ptvradio.co.nz, and on the PTV News app. PTV Radio will also be live streamed on rova.

NEW LOCATION
Originally going to be located at RNZ’s Auckland base, PTV Radio will instead broadcast from state-of-the-art studios within the PTV News newsroom, which will be located at PTV Network’s Flower Street headquarters in Eden Terrace, Auckland (Discovery/Newshub, in real life). Below is a former radio studio which, in real life, was once the home of RadioLIVE and, more recently, Magic Talk.

I apologise for any inconvenience caused.
