Naked City takes listeners through Australia’s past 40 years of crime
Australia’s longest-serving crime reporter, John Silvester, is taking listeners on a deep dive through his 40 years of dealing with the nation’s most dangerous criminals in Naked City, the new podcast for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, which launches today.
Naked City sees Silvester, Walkley Award-winning crime writer, columnist and co-author of the best-selling books that formed the basis of the hit Channel 9 series Underbelly , returning to the gangland wars and delving into the huge archive of tapes and interviews spanning his four decades of outstanding crime reporting.
“I have been covering crime in Australia since 1978 and in the Naked City podcast I will take you deep into my world, where you will hear from the key players in some of our most notorious and infamous cases,” said Silvester.
“We will go inside the world of bikies and hitmen, expose the case where the convicted killer was not the one who launched the fatal attack, and reveal the hidden twist in the case of Great Train Robber Ronald Biggs.”
The eight-part crime series is a key part of The Herald and The Age’s podcast expansion in 2020.Tom McKendrick, Head of Audio and Video for The Herald and The Age, said: “John Silvester is the archetypal newsroom raconteur. I’ve worked with him for well over a decade, and so pleased we’ve finally found a way to condense all of the best of Sly into one format.
“ Naked City gives remarkable access to some of Australia’s most notorious crimes and villains, all spun with the best of John’s wit and story-telling gusto.”
Silvester is also a regular guest on 3AW radio with his Sly of the Underworld segment.

‘Please Explain’ goes daily
The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age’s weekly news podcast, Please Explain , is going daily, rebranding to Please Explain Daily .
The expansion follows on from a trial during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hosted by National Editor Tory Maguire, with Herald senior journalist Jacqueline Maley and The Sunday Age Editor David King also on hosting duties, Please Explain Daily cuts through the noise and gives listeners insights into the stories that drive the nation. Regular contributors include Europe correspondent Bevan Shields, North America correspondent Matthew Knot, chief political correspondent David Crowe, senior economics writer Jess Irvine and political and international editor Peter Hartcher.
“ Please Explain Daily is an excellent example of how The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age are always looking for new ways to engage with our readers and subscribers,” Maguire said.
“My favourite part about hosting it is the constant reminder of the extraordinary work my colleagues at the Herald and The Age do. The response when we went from weekly to daily for the COVID-19 pandemic was so positive it made sense to roll in to a long-term daily format. Our readers really want to hear from the newsroom, so I’m pleased that it will now be a permanent explainer to the daily news cycle.”
Maguire said recent highlights of Please Explain Daily include the episode When our correspondent got COVID, which saw the Herald’s Europe correspondent Bevan Shields talk through his personal experience with the virus, and episodes with science reporter Liam Mannix explaining the hunt for a vaccine.
Please Explain Daily is available on all good podcast services, including Apple and Spotify, daily, Monday to Friday at lunchtime.
I just looked this up why do they split the episodes up in 7 minute blocks? I would find that really annoying
I think because it is made from parts of their radio show.
ABC has launched a six-part musical comedy fiction podcast CrossBread, starring Megan Washington, John Waters, Kate McLennan and Sami Shah. It follows the spectacular rise and infamous demise of the once hugely popular Christian rap outfit CrossBread.
Sonia Kruger has been removed from Mamamia podcast You Beauty because of comments she made about Muslim immigration in 2016. Her episode was released this week but it was removed soon after.
Australian Grand Prix Corporation has launched a new podcast In the Fast Lane, with Daniel Ricciardo special guest for the very first episode.
Former Gogglebox members Adam Densten and Symon Lovett have launched a new AFL podcast He’s Been Doing It All Day.
10 are set to announce a new 10 Speaks podcast, “So… Now What? with Waleed Aly.”
Waleed Aly looks at all the ramifications the Covid-19 pandemic will have on society. Are there silver-linings? Can we make some parts of life better now that we have been forced to examine them properly?
10 Speaks Podcast The Reality Bites: Cocktails and Roses is back with Mat Whitehead from 10 and Tahlia Pritchard from Punkee for the new season of Bachelor in Paradise.
The podcast is hosted by Dr Andrew Rochford.
“One of the claims they made was that people were gaming the chart,” Walkerden told Inside Entertainment host and Radio Today editor Jake Challenor.
“That was breakfast radio shows and drive radio shows were putting lots of episodes out so they would go up higher in the Ranker,” the former Nova executive said.
Of course its being gamed - i’ve noticed that the podcasts that are part of this stupid ranking have changed the way they operate - radio stations (SCA in particular) are pumping out more “episodes” (if you want to call them that), a long form catch up and then a series of shorter snippets which is effectively a duplication of content. Anything that is long form now tends to be split into multiple “Parts”
I dont get how measuring the number of times a podcast is downloaded is particularly meaningful - whats the conversion rate from downloads to listens? are people listening to the whole thing?
I gather that the ranking system is what has led to iheart claiming to be number on for podcasts in Australia. The claim is now included in the opening to every 4KQ news bulletin.
