ABC’s award-winning true crime podcast Unravel returns to investigate the past of convicted killer pilot Greg Lynn in Unravel: Huntsman, available to binge now on the ABC listen app. This six-episode season, hosted by Walkley award winning journalist Rachael Brown (co-host of the Mushroom Case Daily podcast), brings fresh evidence and exclusive interviews that shed new light on a story that has captivated Australia.
When two campers in their 70s vanished in Victoria’s High Country in March 2020, it was assumed they’d return quickly and safely. One of the missing, retired logger Russell Hill, knew the area well, having taken to flying drones while on secret trips with his long-term mistress Carol Clay.
But it was flying this drone that would lead to a disagreement between himself and hobbyist hunter Greg Lynn; a dispute that would later escalate and end in the deaths of both Hill and Clay.
“My intention was to get rid of the evidence because I clearly had failed to make myself disappear off the radar,” Lynn can be heard saying, in his calm pragmatic manner during the police interview, which features in the podcast. In it, he gives a detailed account of what happened the night of the deaths, how he felt as the bodies lay undiscovered for months, and what led him to go back and burn the bodies 8 months later.
Lynn continues: “My profession is working out decision making pathways, and you might think; well, made a terrible one here; but quick decisions to try to come to the best outcome, that’s what I do.”
Before the High Country murder, the warning signs were already at home. After Greg Lynn’s arrest, ABC journalists began to receive messages about his past. “There’s more you need to know,” one said, “Call me.”
One of those journalists was three-time Walkley-Award-winning reporter Rachael Brown, the host of this new season of Unravel.
Rachael says her intuition told her to take the messages seriously. Many of them were from people who knew Greg Lynn’s first wife, Lisa Lynn.
“I thought this kind of violence usually doesn’t come out of nowhere, it’s often practised and honed, and I wondered if there were clues of cruelty in his relationship with Lisa Lynn,” said Rachael.
Through exclusive interviews with friends and family of Lisa Lynn, Rachael uncovers earlier signs of a volatile temper and domestic abuse.
Unravel: Huntsman tells the story of Greg and Lisa’s marriage and tries to understand how this suburban dad and accomplished airline captain, who enjoyed pig hunting and camping, became a convicted murderer who admitted to burning the remains of two pensioners.
Greg Lynn’s appeal against the High Country murder verdict demonstrates the story is far from finished. The podcast untangles how we got to this point and hears from those who tried to raise the alarm on his dangerous behaviour, before the horrifying crime in the High Country.
All six episodes are available to binge now on the ABC listen app or wherever Australians get their podcasts.
