Podcast Ranker: Cultural gap between AFL and NRL

September’s results from the Australian Podcast Ranker, conducted by the Commercial Radio and Audio (CRA) in partnership with Triton Digital, reveals a growing cultural gap between AFL and NRL audiences.

Almost half (49.6%)of AFL fans consume sports podcasts, followed by the preferences of history at 32%, society and culture at 30.3% and news and technology at 30.2%.

37.7% of NRL fans listen to sports while their next preferences are music at 27.4%, technology at 25.3%, and business and comedy at 23.3%, according to Demos+ data.

Well NRL fans aren’t generally the smartest.

Also, wish they’d not include 3 minute news update clips as podcasts.

New LiSTNR podcast Beyond Tough exposes the unseen side of Australia’s sporting heroes

LiSTNR has released a new branded podcast series, Beyond Tough, hosted by actor, author and former NRL player Matt Nable.

Beyond Tough flips the script on traditional notions of toughness, digging deeper and spotlighting the vulnerability behind some of Australia’s most iconic sporting figures.

Across five powerful episodes, Matt Nable sits down with AFL ruckman Brodie Grundy and former sporting greats – rugby league premiership winner Wade Graham, cricketer, vice-captain and now coach and commentator Brad Haddin, Olympic swimming great Cate Campbell OAM, and rugby league forward Aaron Woods, as these tough Aussie legends open up about the moments that truly tested them, both in competition and in life.

From Brodie Grundy admitting he “didn’t have love for the game” early in his AFL career, to Wade Graham revealing how the ASADA scandal rocked his life and family, Brad Haddin reflecting on his daughter’s cancer diagnosis to Cate Campbell reliving the moment her brother nearly died while she was at the London Olympics, and Aaron Woods speaking candidly about his struggles with anxiety – these are stories that redefine what it means to be “tough”.

Michael James, LiSTNR’s Head of Sport said: “LiSTNR is proud to partner with Volkswagen to bring listeners inspiring stories of resilience from some of Australia’s sporting legends. We all know their stats and big wins, but these stories dig deeper into the determination, the setbacks, and the strength it takes to bounce back stronger.”

All five episodes of Beyond Tough will be released on Monday, 10 November 2025. Listen for free exclusively on the LiSTNR app.

The story of Greg’s first wife Lisa features on episode 1 and 6 of Unravel: Huntsman.

ABC’s new true crime podcast Unravel: Huntsman uncovers the secrets of killer pilot Greg Lynn’s dark past

Listen to the first episode HERE

ABC’s award-winning true crime podcast Unravel returns to investigate the past of convicted killer pilot Greg Lynn in Unravel: Huntsman, available to binge now on the ABC listen app. This six-episode season, hosted by Walkley award winning journalist Rachael Brown (co-host of the Mushroom Case Daily podcast), brings fresh evidence and exclusive interviews that shed new light on a story that has captivated Australia.

When two campers in their 70s vanished in Victoria’s High Country in March 2020, it was assumed they’d return quickly and safely. One of the missing, retired logger Russell Hill, knew the area well, having taken to flying drones while on secret trips with his long-term mistress Carol Clay.

But it was flying this drone that would lead to a disagreement between himself and hobbyist hunter Greg Lynn; a dispute that would later escalate and end in the deaths of both Hill and Clay.

“My intention was to get rid of the evidence because I clearly had failed to make myself disappear off the radar,” Lynn can be heard saying, in his calm pragmatic manner during the police interview, which features in the podcast. In it, he gives a detailed account of what happened the night of the deaths, how he felt as the bodies lay undiscovered for months, and what led him to go back and burn the bodies 8 months later.

Lynn continues: “My profession is working out decision making pathways, and you might think; well, made a terrible one here; but quick decisions to try to come to the best outcome, that’s what I do.”

Before the High Country murder, the warning signs were already at home. After Greg Lynn’s arrest, ABC journalists began to receive messages about his past. “There’s more you need to know,” one said, “Call me.”

One of those journalists was three-time Walkley-Award-winning reporter Rachael Brown, the host of this new season of Unravel.

Rachael says her intuition told her to take the messages seriously. Many of them were from people who knew Greg Lynn’s first wife, Lisa Lynn.

“I thought this kind of violence usually doesn’t come out of nowhere, it’s often practised and honed, and I wondered if there were clues of cruelty in his relationship with Lisa Lynn,” said Rachael.

Through exclusive interviews with friends and family of Lisa Lynn, Rachael uncovers earlier signs of a volatile temper and domestic abuse.

Unravel: Huntsman tells the story of Greg and Lisa’s marriage and tries to understand how this suburban dad and accomplished airline captain, who enjoyed pig hunting and camping, became a convicted murderer who admitted to burning the remains of two pensioners.

Greg Lynn’s appeal against the High Country murder verdict demonstrates the story is far from finished. The podcast untangles how we got to this point and hears from those who tried to raise the alarm on his dangerous behaviour, before the horrifying crime in the High Country.

All six episodes are available to binge now on the ABC listen app or wherever Australians get their podcasts.

ABOUT RACHAEL BROWN: Rachael Brown is a three-time Walkley Award winner and co-host of the Mushroom Case Daily podcast. Rachael is also the creator, investigator and host of the ABC’s pioneer true-crime podcast, Trace. Rachael’s review of the 1980 cold case of Maria James in the first season of Trace sparked a new coronial inquest, and she published a book on the case – Trace: Who Killed Maria James?

The second season, Trace: The Informer, tells the story of barrister turned police informer Nicola Gobbo, with whom Rachael secured the world-exclusive interview.
