This has surfaced in the past as you linked but never went anywhere at the time. I suspect that it’s getting pushed now as Please Like Me has been relatively popular streaming in the US and with the current situation most services are going to pull any content produced by anyone deemed problematic.
He’s not the first one to say that about actors being cast in TV shows in Australia. I’ve heard the same thing said by producers of many other scripted shows in Australia too.
I don’t know if it was an excuse for the lack of diversity in their cast but there have been less actors of ethnic backgrounds in the past compared to white actors.
i would say its an excuse
