Pirate Radio

Checking in on it now on my NW TEF, seems to be just open carrier (with stereo pilot).

No doubt the pirates will find 100.7 to their liking as well, so keep an ear on that frequency. Incidentally, do you hear 2ABCRN Mount Dowe via As @tvcl? 2MC Port Macquarie is usually tropo only in Sydney, though may get into some high spots in the extreme north?

Not sure - I haven’t really been checking often . I think I’ve only heard it via tropo.

Might be off now? I can’t receive anything.

Yep. Off-air now. Its schedule is erratic.

On-air/receivable on my NW TEF antenna now, if you were wanting to listen.

And it’s gone off again . Sorry. Hopefully you caught it in time.

Yes heard. And off at 1646 LT. Almost as if the host monitors this thread & switches off the TX as soon as mention is made of 89.5MHz being on air.

I’m curious which part of Sydney it’s coming from. I guess somewhere NW of me but too bad we don’t have more Sydney TEF nodes to be able to better triangulate it.

Here’s a recording of it from about 10 minutes ago:

I got it. Smooth jazz it was.

On-air again now. Let’s see if it disappears again now that it’s been mentioned .

Quite strong on the @tvcl north node, weaker on the SW node and very weak on the Omni. Currently playing 70s disco.

Listening to it on the car radio whilst driving around, it’s generally pretty weak. Listenable on the elevated streets in my suburb, but in the lower/flatter areas, it’s barely receivable.

Whilst checking your web server, I noticed the Chinese station is back as of today. Is this long term?

On 91.6? That’s been on since 29 September. It’s just a temporary licence, presumably for the Chinese Moon Festival, and will end on 28 October.

It comes in quite well up here where I am (about 20-25 dbuv on the TEF) … the signal travels pretty well for 200 watts.

I suppose being on top of Centrepoint helps it get out there.

Yes you’re right… I thought it was Governor Phillip Tower, not Centrepoint, but still pretty high up.

2MBS used to get out very well back when it was on the MLC Tower, but not as well now at Artarmon (for me anyway).

2MBS was always the best north and south (it was the only station causing overload at Oatley). I could still just hear it in the morning from Dorrigo Griffiths Lookout on my recent trip, but could not hear it a bit later in the day.

The specs may have also been changed to mirror the usual Artarmon pattern, ie ERP restrictions north and south. I think 2MBS was 50 kW OD from Governor Phillip Tower so effectively it was the highest ERP station north and south.
