Pirate Radio

Years ago I caught a dance music pirate on 90.8; this was around the Hurstville area. There was also a dance music pirate on 91.8 on air around Christmas 2020.

Living Audio FM (Riverwood) used 88.7, 98.0 and 91.7.

Seems like the 3MP pirate must have been caught or got bored, 90.1 has been off air for a week or so now. A couple days prior to it going, it had gone to open carrier (no audio).

I remember there was a pirate station around Fairfield and Ivanhoe on 88.8 a few years ago. What happened to it? Also, what cause pirate station Whiz FM 99.9 to shut down? I think if it got an official license, it could have been somewhat successful since CADA is not on FM in Melbourne.

Picked up a possible pirate FM station at Beechworth, VIC today:

Nothing listed on the ACMA database, though 99.9 MHz is reserved for a community broadcasting service at Tallangatta. I don’t think it’s this however as it faded very quickly driving out of town, admittedly towards Wangaratta rather than back towards Tallangatta. It lasted for about 5 km so a bit more power than your average mp3 tx. Unfortunately I didn’t check this frequency in Wodonga.

It was airing Casey Kasem AT40 from I think 1987, judging by the tracks played. No announcements at all.

Currently in Trentham and will be here a couple of nights.

Probably straight from YouTube or iHeart.

Why has this happened now twice? Specifically rebroadcasting 3MP? It’s very funny to me

That I can’t be sure, maybe they’re an avid 3MP listener? Or maybe they don’t like ARN? They could just DX it at night on MW directly, as 1377 comes in well at night even in town. If they like ACE radio instead, maybe they could just listen to 3WM on 1089 which can be heard during the day?

The 90.1 transmitter is still online, occasionally with the 3MP livestream but more often than not its just the carrier signal, possibly when the livestream drops out. Its also very low power now, to the point its no longer receivable on my main TEF webserver, which is on the other side of town from this transmitter.

It appears that the no ID Sydney pirate broadcaster on 89.5 has increased its tx power at least past two days.

Is this a new one? I forgot to check 89.5 during my trip to Sydney last weekend.

Don’t know.. rarely hear it & when I did it was barely audible.
It’s off air now.

In what area did you hear the 89.5 Pirate? I’ve moved to NSW and am living in Ryde these days and will keep an ear out for it.

Welcome to Sydney.
I did hear it around Burwood region & Northern beaches, not heard since the report though.

Thanks mate, I’ll keep an ear out for it.

It comes in on my southern Sydney TEF servers when it’s on air, so if also reaches the Northern Beaches, it must be at a decent power/elevation.

I heard it on your Northern FM server the other night on the NE direction playing 70’s music, would this be the pirate or DX from somewhere?

Sounds like the pirate. Usually it’s just one song after another with no IDs.

Looks like it’s on now playing country music

I got sent this by a mate in Melbourne, a sticker advertising some station on 149mhz? Seen in Footscray. Would that be a Land Mobile frequency? Anyone able to check this out?

That 89.5 Pirate in Sydney is certainly getting out well, it’s currently on with back to back 70’s music. No idents though.

I went through Sydney last Monday and I purposely sat on 89.5 in the hope of finding something interesting. All I got was a passing car playing Islamic content somewhere around Wallgrove Road.

A lot of car mp3 txers seem to use 88.9 also; I’ve had them coming over the top of Braidwood FM around Bungendore several times (much to my annoyance).
