This evening noted a p.irate broadcaster in eastern Sydney on 91.8 in stereo.
No announcements, just non stop non vocal beat music.

A lot can be said about Sydney’s community radio woes…

I get the impression if one wants to go pirate, do it over xmas new year when all the clowns at ACMA have pissed off for the year and smoking up their pennies in weed, until they come back over sometime in January. Then all the little dibby dobbers from CRA come out of the wood work and submit their complaints, oh, we heard a pirate sometime on Tuesday December 28th. Because they are long gone, ACMA have nothing to go on, what a laugh! If ACMA gave everyone a equal legal go at the spectrum and embraced DRM, this wouldn’t be a problem.

As if CRA wouldn’t be as protective of DRM/+ access as they are with DAB+

I know I’ve been a bit tongue and cheek around here of late, but exactly my sentiments.

CRA are protective of everything, because they’re a$$holes, akin to a five year old kid that has every toy in the world, but won’t share a thing.

… nope, just business people providing employment and trying to make a quid … don’t always agree with them, but would probably do exactly the same in their shoes …

I picked up a pirate on 91.8 this afternoon. I was trying for More fm Auckland SpE. The station was playing dance music. It faded up near the M7 on Sunnyholt Rd Acacia Gardens, so would have been coming from the south.
The signal was extremely weak lost pretty quickly as I drove down the hill.

In any functional system of any business model whether it’s tourism, food and beverage, fashion, construction, aviation, liquor, hospitality, you’ll have some large players, but generally will have a number of medium and small players. It is at this point that it is important then to distinguish between a:) someone setting up a business, and b:) it’s ultimate fate whether it grows to profit or fails to bankruptcy. Problem with Commercial Radio Australia that they have legislation and the government completely wrapped around their fingers, to the point that unless you are in with the “well connected corporate crowd”, there is no way for anyone to just start a radio station, as in point a:). Whether one succeeds or fails is a moot point as getting in is next to impossible.

Not everyone get’s their way, but in the government to business world they are compromises that everybody has to make on all fronts, but one sector is completely oblivious to this. When compared to other industries, Commercial radio australia are getting very special treatment. If they were open to other players, many of the incumbent radio stations and networks would fall flat on their face, because of their same crappy content every day. They are the most protected species and ACMA are just part of the same protectionist racket as the lobbied controlled government.

In short, those who want to profit will prefer a system of licensing where there is a limited resource, those who want fair competition will advocate a system of openness where ultimately the market decides who succeeds and fails.

… lots of people have “got in” … including myself, but most of those who have did the hard yards and spent the time and effort searching for the opportunity … we’re not part of the “well connected corporate crowd” at all … our licences didn’t fall in our laps … do the same and maybe you’ll find your opportunity …

87.8 and 88.0 are clear here in Bungendore. I don’t want to start an LPON at this stage due to my involvement with Braidwood FM, but could be an opportunity for @anonymousbroadcaster. Would love to listen to Pure Retro again.

Sorry to say @anonymousbroadcaster but you’re really starting to come across as jilted and bitter.

You’re hung up on this idea of running an LPON/HPON but be it for lack of license accessibility and/or access to capital you’re unable to fulfil that dream.

Welcome to life, it doesn’t always go according to the way you want it to go. I’m a living breathing example of that. Accept what you don’t have control over and move on.

As I and others have suggested you could try other means of getting onto the airwaves be it community or internet radio. And let’s face it my kids, my nieces and nephews and my step daughter don’t even listen to radio, they’re the YouTube generation and there’s plenty of content creators making big money reaching 10s to 100s of thousands of people. If your content is interesting enough there’s other platforms to use and be discovered on. Aim higher then the tiny audience a LPON will get you.

Regarding discovery you’ve mentioned before it’s easier to be discovered on the airwaves when people are searching the dial but besides us radio nerds who still does that??? I’d argue for a LPON with a limited reach that’s a terrible business plan.

Also just because you can’t get an LPON/HPON license doesn’t give you the right to attack those that have made an effort to and have been fortuitous enough to do such.

Don’t think I’m paying out on narrowcasting either, I’m a avid Raw FM listener.

I did enjoy your Internet radio station when it was online; it was a unique offering. At least consider a weekly Mixcloud show based on Pure Retro. Easy for you and the cost is trivial. Search for ‘Paul’s Powerzone’ on Mixcloud to give you an idea of what’s possible (I’ll think you’ll like it).

I really hope you aren’t trying to use your Aspergers as an excuse for your behaviour, because you most certainly are not the only Media Spy member who’s autistic and/or an Aspie.

Interesting a number of days have past now and after quite a few people seeing motosenokia’s comment, a number of things have come to light. With discussions with several other forum members offline (phone calls and emails) many issues of note have come to the light of day. wile it not be appropriate to single out any member or comment, the core issue during our discussions were particular behaviours in several threads, most predominantly “Sock Puppetry”. In short the consensus was if a member advocated a strong position that is not part of the so called “echo chamber”, they’d be intimidated by a particular nasty form of character assassination by stealth, which is further reinforced by other methods. but I’ll leave the rest of that up to others to debate and discuss. I’d also would like to add if a member has a particular grievance with another, that a more appropriate method of engagement would have been to PM privately, rather to have berate them publicly. I would like to take this opportunity to thank several members for their encouragement, which is much appreciated, and am happy to say wile I’m FAR FROM PERFECT, I feel that I’m no more or less than anybody else, and to suggest that I want everything my way, comes across as rather ignorant and arrogant. They are other fundamental issues worthy of mentioning, but again, feel that this is not the appropriate place or time to elaborate.
