Perth Telethon

Why did they put the frosted glass over the telethon logos?

As mentioned elsewhere, Telethon continuing after 7am with its own breakfast programming.

Watching the broadcast is appears to be a poor set design.

I also wish they’d lighten up the stage mood for the morning. It’s terribly dark at 7am.

Gives the broadcast a really morbid feeling too

Why don’t the Melbourne good friday appeal telecast go for 3 days as well royal children’s is heaps better than Perth hospital doesn’t make sense.

Despite it seeming to be a staple of telethons, none of the Sunrise presenters was asked to go shirtless today to secure a donation :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: (not even Dr Harry). Shirvo did get a $250 donation by showing an image of himself running at the Sydney Olympics (from his phone) and performed Old Time Rock and Roll.

I wonder why 7 is giving a 26 hour broadcast to the Perth Children Hospital where as Melbourne only gets 4 hours for the Good Friday Appeal for for the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne

Because they love Perth

it’s been a tradition for 7 Perth for decades, nothing to do with preferential treatment

This same subject comes up every year and has already been discussed at length. You can search for that if you’re interested.

You lost me with this part though: “royal children’s is heaps better than Perth hospital”. What an incredibly stupid thing to say.

Why did you feel that was necessary? A Perth hospital is just as important as a Melbourne hospital. Grow up.

You could argue the same for the GFA and 7 Melbourne

The conga line and the “thank you very much for your kind donation” song just returned to celebrate $550 million in total donations since Telethon began.

That was awesome to see again.

Entirely two different, you can’t really compare Afl grand final to a charity fundraising though. Jasondockers comment about royal hospital being better than Perths children hospital was a shit thing to say to be honest.

I’d say that GFA = Good Friday Appeal

Yes, there are obvious differences in how Seven puts resources and talent into one over the other, and probably as no coincidence that Kerry Stokes is a WA man (whose private company IIRC always manages to make a generous donation to Telethon but I am not sure he has ever done the same on Good Friday, but whatevs), but the two different appeals have had very different formats historically which in part leads to the current situation.

The Perth telethon has, for at least the past 40+ years, aired over a Saturday-Sunday. The Good Friday Appeal has, since the first all-day telethon in 1960, only occupied Good Friday. (Although for many years the appeal phone lines opened on the Thursday night before Good Friday even though there was no televised component at that time but it allowed people to phone in donations before going away for the Easter weekend).

The Good Friday Appeal gets more than 4 hours airtime IIRC, even in its current abbreviated form. There is usually the afternoon segment, break for the Good Friday footy match, then the evening segment. Yes it’s not the full 16-hour telecast that it used to get, which is disappointing, but I think to say it only gets 4 hours is AFAIK not correct.

Who said anything about AFL?

This comes up here often but I’m not convinced that has anything to do with it. Well, not entirely anyway.

Telethon pre-dates Stokes ownership by 28 years and was deeply rooted in the Perth community long before he took over. I will grant you that he could have stopped it at any time but I still believe it would hurt Seven in a huge way.

One of the main reasons TVW has historically had a large and loyal following is because once the people of WA latch on to something they REALLY latch on to it. West Aussies are a loyal bunch and Telethon is one of those things that has touched almost everyone in WA in some way. I wouldn’t have made it past 6 years old without it.

The loyalty Seven has in WA can easily be lost by screwing with something as important as Telethon. If Seven tried to scale it back now it would sting them. Big time. Especially if that decision comes from the eastern states. The COVID border situation shows you how little WA cares about the rest of the country.

With all of that said I still don’t like that people see the two events as competition. The Good Friday Appeal and Telethon are equally important in terms of what they are doing and it’s awesome they both still exist.

Looking at the list of trustees for the Telethon trust, it is clearly a Seven driven thing (regardless of whether or not Stokes is a driving factor in it staying around)
