Optus Satellite at a pub in regional NSW
Do the old Sky Channel dishes get used for anything these days?
I’m pretty sure these are for Sky and TAB network channels.
I think they’re just old large Ku band dishes, so could be used for most domestic TV. Ones like in this photo have been around since the '80s. I’d prefer an offset dish like the darker ones next to it.
Wouldn’t surprise me if the large Sky one is disused and they haven’t removed it. They seem to like the aesthetic of having a dish farm on their verandah. There’s just no need to have that many - there aren’t that many satellites to tune in to haha.
Wouldn’t be surprised if that one is not used. But I know you do see newer ones and all they get is TAB. Plus they will get whatever channels are associated with TAB network.
Is that not typically whatever Ku Band is tuned in and the wavelength of the LNB?
Theoretically, being able to watch any satellite within Australia?
The system these days is pretty good. Lots of features and custom audio channels for different states. They use the same platform as VAST so the large focused dishes are not really needed anymore. WA TAB has an internet-based tote info system mixed in with Sky satellite in a lot of venues. I think they’re termed ‘pub walls’.
Sky even has a fleet of ordinary domestic set-top boxes for use at temporary venues or country race tracks that don’t really warrant a full system.
Wow, Altech UEC boxes have been used by all satellite television companies in Australia.
Austar, Foxtel and Sky Racing
Optus Sport, too.
apolagies, and Optus Sport.
Never new Optus had dishes?
I didn’t either until I saw the above photo of Royal Oak Hotel. I do recall seeing white domestic dishes with the old Optus ‘world’ logo on them many many years ago. Probably used for the initial rollout of Optus Aurora.
The pub would have got Optus Sport installed for the EPL I’d say.
Not entirely related, but a previous house we used to live in, had ‘satellite internet’, (with its own modem and kitten caboodle) never used it though, as copper phone lines were on premise already.
A house ‘just’ outside of Ballarat, VIC.
I recall it was ‘ipstar Broadband’
I do gotta say, it has the weirdest LNB on its pole, thats for sure.
Also, do Foxtel techs still need to choose what size of dish that needs to be used on the house anymore?
Made up the current foxtel tv guide (before foxtel Arts disappeared) and mock up of my version.

Personally think I made it better.
Optus basically made the pubs that wanted Optus Sport Buy a dish just for the channels. I’m not sure whether you still need it though? They may have put it on the PUB network.
I think there all a standard size. The only diffrence is the bracket.
I like kittens.
