Discovery will be on Paramount+ in Australia and other territories where it’s already launched. Where Paramount+ hasn’t yet launched, the series will be on Pluto TV.
Nothing to do with Netflix anymore, ViacomCBS has bought back the international streaming rights.
Take your first point about the distribution of the program, but that doesn’t explain why they would’ve made the decision and announced that they would delay the latest season for outside the US if it wasn’t related to contractual issues - which I believe they’ve settled with their latest announcement.
What reason could they possibly have had to do that? You don’t launch an international streamer at great cost, announce that you’ve bought back the rights to an extremely popular show for territories outside the US only to then delay it by months. That just doesn’t make sense at all.
An easy way to bring Trekkie subscribers over to Paramount+. Take an existing fanbase and give them a reason to sign up, like how Amazon snapped up the Top Gear trio to make The Grand Tour. They only dealt with Netflix and Amazon because they didn’t have an international platform of their own.
But in any case, this deal feels extremely rushed. I wouldn’t be surprised if the resounding success of Lower Decks season 2 on a competing platform, and the launch of Prodigy lit a fire under the executives to quickly hash out a deal to take back control of Discovery.
A similar deal with Amazon for Lower Decks and Picard is probably being hashed out right now since Picard season 2 is on its way in only three months.
I get why P+ have taken Discovery back for their own platform, it’s a no brainer to have acquired that back from Netflix to drive subscriber growth for the fledging streamer.
What I’m saying however, is that there must have been some contractual reason why they (I’m guessing) were initially going to have to delay launching it on P+ in territories outside of the US, but that now seems to be resolved since they’re going ahead and launching from tomorrow.
I’m assuming that the backlash from fans worldwide prompted them to work out some arrangement where the show could be brought to them earlier.
There’s no way they would’ve put out the post the other day about how it’ll be delayed internationally, only to do a complete 360 in a matter of days if there wasn’t some contractual obligation they were fulfilling with Netflix which has now been resolved.
It’s pretty clear really, in any way it’s a win for fans.
