Knowing they can secure 98% of the national audience to a new buyer, its more attractive to sell off the network as whole. Especially when these regional stations are going at minimal cost.
This is irrelevant - Canada isnât requiring Netflix to offer news content, itâs requiring them (and others) to pay a levy that will go towards paying for future news (and other local) content.
Every year when I register my car I pay a considerable levy to the Government that is invested in road safety or my house insurance which includes a levy to pay for emergency services - I donât get a say in where that money goes, both are used to provide a greater good. What Canada has proposed is no different
(FWIW The Canadian law also allows streamers to offset their contributions through the provision of locally produced content, but doesnât require it to do both pay and produce content)
This has real potential to become a wedge issue between the regionals and Ten, that might hand some temporary bargaining power to WIN/SCA
Ten might not want to acquire the regionals, but if the regionals are willing to progressively shutter them then they may have little choice.
From the TV Tonight newsletter this week:
Network 10 turns 60 next week and is throwing a small bash in Melbourne to be hosted by network doyennes Sandra Sully & Angela Bishop
I wonder if weâll see anything on air to promote the 60th. August the 1st?
Any chance they could do it at the former ATV10 studios in Nunawadin, after all that is the birthplace of the 0/10 Network and its amazing that the facility is still running.
I still remember Marty the Monster imploring us to send our letters to Nunawading!
Ten couldnât find someone from Melbourne to host?
Iâm sure Sandra and Angela were chosen due to their longevity at the station.
Sandra Sully? She hasnât exactly been a household name in Melbourne since 2011. Jennifer Keyte wouldâve been a much better choice.
Iâm sure Melbourne staff know who Sandra is. Itâs not a televised event. Itâs just a luncheon isnât it?
Not sure, one would think that the Melbourne bulletin might at least mention the milestone.
Possibly, yes. But for a Melbourne-hosted event for the birthday of a Melbourne TV station, could they not have found someone who actually works there. Maybe Ms Keyte is not available but she would have been ideal not just as a current local anchor but has history at the station.
Itâs just a party. I donât think 10 are thinking too much into it.
If it were a televised celebration with guests and clips from the last 60 years then, yeah, sure, but itâs likely just a small gathering for the Melbourne team. Nothing more. Nothing less.
I think we can agree on that
All the more reason not to fly down two senior presenters from Sydney. But it is what it is.
Is there anyone left?
Would love to see 10 rejuvienatve daytime from Melbourne. Bring back 9am GMA with Rove, leading into new Drew.
Jen Keyte, Rove and Tom Glisner are still working in the building.
What does Rove do for 10?
Still hosts The Project on Fridays and works behind the scenes on it.
Itâs not irrelevant at all.
Canada is asking Netflix - who is an entertainment company - to subsidise Canadian journalism.
If Canada is not able to support a healthy thriving news and Journalistic industry - that is not Netflixâs problem.
The link between car resgistration and house insurance is weak. You car car drives on roads and emergency services are used to protect your house.
Again, Netflix and D+ have said they support funding Canadian content - as well as aboriginal and black programming. Just not local over the air news.
Specifically the fund is being asked to protect local news I may add, not national type news.
Again, localism and local Journalism is not the business Netflix is in. To me - thatâs like asking McDonaldâs to subside local supermarkets because people are choosing to eat out at fast food rather than shop at the local bakery and fruit and veg.
Canada should find a way to incentivise more local Journalism - not have entertainment companies subsidide it.
