Yeah, my point was over-the-air broadcast quality is terrible now, and if FttP NBN had been allowed to finish it may have replaced OTA broadcasts by now.
You’re right that ad integration is poorly done (& I don’t know why it’s so bad).
There’s also the aspect that if I’m paying for a service, I expect it won’t try to double-dip by still having commercial breaks (e.g. Foxtel).
I find 10Paly basically unusable because they force you to sit through the ads when trying to skip to a particular section of a program - makes it impossible to skip to a particular story on the news etc. On top of that, programs freeze half the time and get stuck on the ads. Why bother.
Perhaps the next round of cuts at 10 will be things like outsourced playout, more centralised sales teams and more consolidated office space - Adelaide/Perth would likely be too big now with no local production and more staff presumably working from home…
Brisbane don’t need all their space either. Perhaps if it’s too expensive to move they could lease out their office space and former news/production studio to Production Companies or external uses?
The studios in Brisbane can only be used for television purposes, so they couldn’t lease out space to anyone else except to probably production companies, as you say.
Yes Brisbane based TV Production Companies. Have to be worth their while as they could get cheaper rents closer to the city. I wonder if the staff canteen would close too? Must be the only Ten station with one? Less staff = less profits.
Since they can only be used as television studios, could they have based playout in Brisbane? I’d assume they could move anywhere within Sydney and Melbourne.
Yes, but I’d say there’s more chance of Presentation moving to a third party site in Sydney (ie- Mediahub, Deluxe, joint Nine/Seven/SCA Playout Centre, possibly a joint venture deal with Foxtel) before moving the entire in-house team and infrastructure to Brisbane.
Maria Kyriacou the head of ViacomCBS UK, Australia and Israel doesn’t sound like she is preparing to jettison Ten from the company - Ten has been integrated with the rest of the company. This is a great interview, and she talks extensively about Australia.
A comment Kyriacou makes seems to indicate that Pluto TV will be fully launched in Australia:
Currently what’s available in Australia is a massively cutdown version of Pluto.
It was really important that we had a stable long-term business. 10 is a phenomenal broadcaster and channel, but we had to make sure they were on stable ground and fully integrated into the wider ViacomCBS and utilizing everything it has to offer.
Or this:
I think last year we really saw the benefits of having these free-to-air networks. More people turned to television than ever before, because they were locked down in their own homes. But our networks, despite being the smallest, or number three, in both Australia and the U.K., had the strongest share growth in the marketplace. And I think we recognized how important it was to serve local audiences with local content.
They can still prioritize streaming as a future focused company, whilst still not forgetting about their FTA assets which are a core part of their business.
ViacomCBS aren’t going to be offloading 10. They fought for the company less than 5 years ago.
They are going to integrate it fully into the business though, so that they can have the benefit of a FTA license in Aus with a recognisable brand in place… but they’re not keeping ANY of the duplicated departments.
Sorry, you are correct!, it’s not available in Australia. It definitely was before, which would have been before it was acquired by ViacomCBS. I hadn’t opened the app for ages, but I just tried and now it won’t connect.
… they didn’t fight for it at all … 10 owed them heaps moola … the only way they were gonna see that was to take it over … the MEAA persuaded all the staff (who were technically creditors) to vote for the foreign CBS takeover rather than the Bruce Gordon / Lachlan Murdoch Australian joint venture … QED
