Paper Dolls

Anyone watching this? It’s very … odd.

Yeh not at all what I was expecting but will stick with it as it’s different to most stuff on tv

Is it really dark?

I read somewhere that Belinda Chapple originally had a concept about what the show would be about but then other producers introduced a lot of dark concepts.

Very dark. With lots of confronting storylines and scenes. Not ‘poppy’ at all.

It’s kept me for all 4 currently available eps but yeh, not what I was expecting.

And I know there’s been lots written about it NOT being based on Bardot, but it very much looks that way. Even the marketing within the show is exactly the same from what I remember of those days.

I’ve seen first 3 eps, also not what I expected.

Not sure what to think about it, it’s shot quite well and appreciate it’s different to everything else we’ve seen on tv recently but the first ep had some pretty cringe stuff - the whole pizza delivery thing was weird and poorly acted, surely those guys weren’t as transfixed on watching a pop girls tv show as they made out?

Stand out performance for me is Emma Booth as Margot, very good.

Will probably check the latest ep out at some point.

 I really don’t understand why so many creators/producers want to make these dark and seriously bleak shows these days. I’d much prefer to watch something lighter and funny.

I wouldn’t mind them tackling some serious issues but much better if that was underlying rather than dominating.

But isn’t the whole point is that it’s representative of the music industry at that time?

Plenty of lighter and funny options out there if this isn’t for you.

I don’t think it’s an exact representation though. After all it’s fiction and not a documentary. Even Belinda Chapple has been quick to say that it’s not a portrayal of what happened to Bardot. It’s supposedly very loosely based on their experiences.

Sounds like you’re looking for Girls5eva.

Is it any good?

Sounds like Boytown.

Never saw that, but enjoyed Girls5Eva.

Another weird episode this week.

I’ve only watched the first 3 episodes and haven’t sampled the rest yet.

Curious as to how it was weird?

Maybe weird is the wrong word. But they all have hidden demons it seems (even the baby of the group) which I guess is the point of the show but also the constant graphic imagery etc.

I heard a song from the fictional group on iHeart Australia this afternoon. Monster by Harlow. I guess they’ve released it as a single?

There’s a short clip of the song on YouTube.

Yeah I read an interview pre launch which said they’d be releasing the music, I’ll see if I can find it.

The final episode will be available this Sunday, January 7. Paramount+ says it will have a “showstopping” ending.

Album with the original songs from the show is now available, for anyone interested:

The series will stream on ThreeNow in New Zealand from March 3.

This is HARLOW has been nominated in the Best Original Soundtrack or Musical Theatre Cast Album in this year’s ARIA Awards.
