Overseas TV History

Two old idents from the flagship station (ZYE439, channel 4 in São Paulo) of the defunct brazilian network Rede Tupi in 1977, including one with a short-lived logo that lasted 3 months. ZYE439 was the first TV channel in South America: it signed on in 1950 and was shut down 30 years later, in 1980. Its São Paulo frequency was later reassigned to a new TV network (SBT) in 1981.

A short, refined promo of the launch of German TV channel Kabel 1 in December 1994, that replaced the channel Die Kabelkanal, which began broadcasting 2 years before.

A Sunday night bulletin from the South sub-region of ITV Central in February 1996, presented by Mark Lipscomb. At the same time, he was a weekday continuity announcer at Carlton in London, commuting to Abingdon to present Central South’s news bulletins on weekends. He also had stints with Thames and TVS.

Finally, a tribute to one of Argentine TV’s great newscasters: Cesar Mascetti. He passed away last week at the age of 80, and for many years it was a symbol of journalism excellence. His work will always be associated with Telenoche, the program he presented for a dozen years (1992-2003) with his wife Monica Cahen D’Anvers (another legend). Here’s the first segment of their last newscast on Friday 19 December 2003 when they retired from daily TV news, where they presented the day’s major stories (as usual) but also took some time to reflect on their long careers and the stories they covered.

A collection of IDs, slides, news opens, etc., from every U.S. market in the 1970s. (The one at the 2:18 mark will show you what Seven Australia’s current ribbon logo would look like if it were “folded” just a bit differently):

ARD began legal action against Kabel Eins because of the logo seen here. The public broadcaster claimed that people might be confused by the numeral “1” and associate Kabel Eins with ARD. Kabel Eins modified the logo and removed the “1” while the legal action was in progress (bottom image), but the old logo was reinstated after Kabel Eins won the court battle in 1999.

Speaking of Kabel Eins, the channel began airing news in 1997. This is the channel’s elegant news open looked like back then; it features the numeral-less logo:

A 1995 montage of opens and other elements from WSVN in Miami, known for its tabloid, in-your-face style and its elaborate “Newsplex” set:

The same set was subsequently adopted by WSVN’s sister station WHDH in Boston–and, perhaps unexpectedly, by ProSieben in Germany, which you can see in this 1997 clip:

An elegant 2001 ident from Canal 6 (Repretel) in Costa Rica, followed by a ratings bumper.

A compilation of news bumpers and intros of the defunct French channel La Cinq in early 1992. Includes a loop filler with a promo of its daily news programs. Its identity was very innovative and experimental, particularly when it comes to the music. Unfortunately, it closed down on 12 April that same year.

Finally, a weather report from Canal 7 Mendoza (Argentina) in October 1997, presented by veteran meteorologist Luis Nilo Gonzalez. Despite the consolidation of computer graphics during the 1990s, he was still delivering his forecasts like in the good old days: drawing winds and temperatures over a map of Canal 7’s coverage area (the provinces of Mendoza, San Juan and San Luis) and over a map of Argentina. Gonzalez retired from his daily duties in 2003 after 36 years on TV.

Rediscovered this video of WNBC’s We’re 4 New York promo campaign from 1993. I forgot how they really turned up the cheese to 11 on this one. So much, it’ll make you lactose intolerant.

And this is the news theme that went with that campaign: http://www.newsmusicsearcharchive.com/#3,1,216

It’s unique and yet characteristically French. Speaking of the music, the broadcaster used Strauss’
Thus Spoke Zarathustra as its theme in the late 1980s:

Vaguely similar to this old-school 1986 weather forecast from Communist Albania!

Here’s another legendary WNBC promo, this one from 1997. It’s not as famous and it’s loooong, but I love its sense of cinematic drama:

That theme is magnificent! (along with the NBC Stations package used by WNBC for its newscasts)
This promo’s clean music (without the voiceover) is available on Edd Kalehoff’s website:

One of the topics we haven’t covered here yet is news programming aimed at kids. Here are 2 cases from Europe:
*Opener and partial segment of MiniZIB (children’s version of Austria’s ORF news show Zeit im Bild) from Friday 19 November 1993, hosted by Danielle Spera.

*The other example is BBC’s long-running program Newsround. Here’s most of an edition from April 1998, hosted by Kate Gerbeau and Chris Rogers. He later become correspondent and presenter at BBC and ITV News.

Interestingly, MiniZiB was hosted by the main Zeit im Bild anchors of that period.

“It’s Monday the 28th of October. Good morning and welcome to ITV1.”
20 years ago to this day, whether you were watching Granada, Tyne Tees, or Yorkshire Television - that name of your local ITV station was no longer your main channel name for ITV.

Carlton and Granada, the local companies who owned ITV’s local franchises in England and Wales relaunched the network as ITV1. However, ITV franchises in Scotland (excluding Border Television), Northern Ireland, and the Channel Islands, which weren’t owned by Carlton or Granada kept their local names. (UTV, Scottish TV, Grampian TV, Channel Television)

References to the local names were now only during the local news, or referred in other parts of ITV1 as “ITV1 Granada”, “ITV1 Tyne Tees”, and “ITV1 Yorkshire”. Granada used the local names in their production end slides as well.

This was a huge change to the structure of the older regional ITV system.

Here’s how ITV1 launched:

The London franchises (Carlton and London Weekend Television) were renamed as ITV1 London.

Here’s the various presentation to go with the new ITV1 of the time:
