Overseas Television

This probably won’t last, funding the CBC has become politicised in a way far beyond the ABC is. There’s no real substance, CBC made good moves to shift to heavily locally produced programming, so most of the funding goes to Canadian content.

But the talking points from the right on bias/woke/etc have made it a target, so I would expect to see funding cuts if the Conservatives get in, which is looking likely.

TVB Plus is now on air, which boasts interactivity, promising instant interactions during shows, tie-ins to online shopping platforms, additional information, special offers and TV voting. This is their full 20s ident, with rather nice animation ngl:

The first programme junction, with a cube that based on QR Code methinks?

And a breakbumper card that looks slightly different:

The FSI Channel aired a farewell card reminding viewers the switch to Phoenix TV (the overseas version of the card didn’t mention the latter). Didn’t expect them to air this, given TVB’s cheap antics:

Pres wise, no changes specifically for the latter’s FTA launch - they’re still using their 2011 ident. Only their own DOG is present too, compared to usual treatment of the CCTV channels in HK.

Global Task Force for public media condemns destruction of TV tower in Kharkiv, Ukraine

The destruction on Monday of a TV tower by a suspected Russian missile strike in Kharkiv is an attempt to silence news media and constrain access to vital news and information, says the Global Task Force for public media.

As global public service media leaders committed to the principle of media freedom and the right to information, the Global Task Force condemns this attack.

When vital communication infrastructure is attacked, such as the television tower in Kharkiv and the tower and broadcasting facilities in Kiev, it is an intolerable attempt to restrict people’s ability to find and share accurate, reliable news and information, and further compromises public security and safety.

The attack also underlines the importance of critical internet infrastructure that is resilient, stable and quick to recover, which Ukrainians increasingly rely on to keep informed through trusted public service media and other news media’s digital services.

This latest incident comes against the backdrop of a continuing Russian onslaught against news media and journalists, who are increasingly targeted with a range of violence and threats, including detainments, attacks, injuries, and deaths in relation to this conflict.

The Global Task Force emphasises that principles of international humanitarian law must be respected, including the protection of civilian infrastructure and the safety of journalists.

In Spain, Atresmedia’s LaSexta has a new graphics package and updated the logo for its 18th birthday. The identity was done in-house, and featured the numeral in 6 other patterns. In their own words:

Atresmedia’s Image and Creativity team has developed a new graphic identity system that dresses the continuity of the channel on broadcast. The main element of this new animation system is the polymorphic logo, which offers up to 6 variations of the brand, to give the channel greater character and expressiveness.

This new element enters the game as a key piece of communication with the viewer: it plays with him, guides him, surprises him, welcomes him to a new world… It is the guiding thread of the new graphic universe of laSexta as it adopts multiple roles: from being the channel’s logo, to acting as a navigation selector, becoming an interactive element and even offering its variety of forms to create transitions and animations in the graphic and product pieces.

This Tweet is a showreel of the new identity, largely focused on the promo styles:

A celebratory ident/break bumper, with their slogan 18 Years… and we’re still very green:

And another one that utilizes the pattern. They also have one that says “We’ll be back in 7 minutes”:

After buying the OCS group of premium movies channels from Orange for a year, Canal+ in France is to merge the brand with their Ciné+ channels on July 3, with a new lineup on the former’s 6 channels:

OCS, infinitely cinema, resolutely series: New films on television and premium series.

Ciné+Frisson, cinema sensations: Blockbusters, thrillers, horror and the big, unmissable franchises.

Ciné+Émotion, passionate about cinema: Remarkable destinies, great passions and unforgettable romantic comedies.

Ciné+Family, the cinema that brings together: Great family stories, popular comedies, and animated and adventure films.

Ciné+Festival, indie cinema: Arthouse, independent and iconoclastic films, major names in world cinema and the discovery of tomorrow’s talents.

Ciné+Classic, legendary cinema: Cult films of French, American and European cinema, from the 1930s to the 1990s.

(Translated from Canal+ annonce une nouvelle offre cinéma-séries avec OCS - Les Numériques)

Ciné+Premier is to be the ‘new’ OCS, while the overarching on-demand service would be, creatively, Ciné+OCS. The current OCS channels would most likely close down.

Canal+ also showed how the new channels would look like on Twitter:

I didn’t realise RTE was in such dire straits. They produce some good stuff. I assumed their Govt funding was adequate.

As someone in Ireland, there has been a lot of scrutiny on the broadcaster’s spending, especially on talent. Most people are not paying the licence fee which funds RTE and other providers due to their financial mismanagement.

Do they have the licence henchmen that come round asking for TV licence like they do in the UK?

Not really. It is easy to not pay it and get away with it.

Ahh. Interesting. Stark contrast to the UK licence Goons lol

It seems a strange and archaic way to fund a national broadcaster with a “licence fee”. Why haven’t they moved on and funded it like the ABC here or CBC in Canada?

TVP seems to be restructuring its channel lineup, per an application sent to the Polish TV authority:

  • The secondary channels (Historia 2, Kultura 2, ABC 2) are to be closed down, citing increased online access to the programmes;
  • FTA channels Alfa (for teens) and Kobieta (women’s programming) are also shutting down, citing “the teens are moving online” and weak ratings respectively;
  • Historia, Nauka and Dokument are to be merged into a new channel, TVP Wiedza (Knowledge), to boost its ratings without internal competition, while maintaining its PSB function. It will be using Historia’s former air space.

ViuTV in Hong Kong has switched to a fresher look after 7 years - just in time for Summer:

Global has really leant into being the place for simulcast American programming - seems to have had some recent success too:

“This spring, Global experienced a reawakening and emerged with an incredibly successful season. Since mid-February, Global rose to #1 in core primetime**, delivering 11 of the Top 20 programs*, more than any other network,” said Troy Reeb, Executive Vice President, Networks and Content, Corus Entertainment.

Wouldn’t be surprised if its some kind of sport or repeats

Shortly after Yle’s new news graphics and studio, its flagship channel TV1 debuted a refreshed graphics package, opting for a more dynamic purple and turquoise instead of the existing blue.

This is their generic ident. The diamond design looked a bit like the Dutch NPO though IMO:

The breakdown slide, followed by a station promo junction:

Earlier, Disney Junior has a new look and a new symbol, omitting the Mickey ears and shortened the name to Disney Jr. The symbol is spotted earlier this year in a US trademark application, which took the abbreviation further to D Jr.:

The package is first seen in the US, while international feeds have their DOGs updated.
