Optus Sport

It’s pretty easy to keep subscriptions if you make it free. Especially as if when you go to cancel they say don’t bother because it’s free.

Doesn’t Simon Hill work for Fox Sports?

Yes but he does freelance work. He is commentating for the J-League international feed, not Optus Sport specifically.

The current Premier League season will resume on June 17 in UK (June 18 in Australia), subject to government approval. Nevertheless it is good news for Optus and its subscribers.

Premier League returns to Optus Sport

The Premier League season is set to make its long-awaited and joyful return on Thursday 18 June AEST when Manchester City take on Arsenal and Aston Villa play Sheffield United.

Optus Sport will stream all 92 remaining live games when the 2019/20 season provisionally restarts on 18 June and a full round of fixtures begins on 20 June.

“The Premier League’s return is a huge moment for live sport and we’re thrilled to reconnect our passionate Optus Sport customers to what they love,” Optus’ Head of TV and Content, Corin Dimopoulos, said.

“For sport-starved fans, the Premier League’s return could not come at a better time. Live sport is a great unifier that brings people together from across the world through shared moments of joy and excitement.

“Optus Sport is the exclusive Australian home of the world’s most watched football league and we can’t wait to bring every game live and on-demand to our customers from 18 June.”

Optus Sport’s coverage of the Premier League includes comprehensive live programming and all games available on-demand, including the popular mini matches and highlights, so viewers never miss a moment of the action.

To celebrate the Premier League’s return, Optus Sport has launched a new mobile app with innovative new features and an improved layout to engage fans and provide an even more immersive experience

“We have re-built our app from the ground-up to give football fans the best possible experience when streaming live or on-demand. The new app design is bursting with more content, archives and competitions, two round-the-clock football channels, personalised content feeds and a new ‘Match Centre’, which combines all the coverage and stats in one place,” said Corin.

Optus Sport will also give viewers the option to experience games with virtual crowd noise to replicate the unique, vibrant atmosphere of each stadium, meaning grounds such as Anfield will still sound like Anfield. If fans prefer the natural sound of the matches without crowd noise, they will have that option too.

All 92 remaining matches will also feature their own studio coverage, while enhancements such as virtual analysis from players’ perspectives, player cam content and live warm-ups on social media for certain matches will also feature.

The Premier League was suspended on 13 March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will return with new kick-off times and matches played behind closed doors.

Optus Sport recently became the first Australian broadcaster to resume live major football after landing Australian rights to K League, which started streaming on May 8.

Optus will only be able to show five of ten matches on its “traditional” channels on the final day of English Premier League 2019/20 season on Monday morning (AEST), based on the schedule at Optus Sport website. And why is it not showing Everton v Bournemouth live, given the latter is in a battle for survival with Aston Villa and Watford, whose matches will be telecast live?

Why can’t they?

Optus now only has six channels. The main channel (Optus Sport 1) is used for rolling coverage while Optus Sport 2-6 are for individual matches. With all ten matches kicking off at the same time on the final day (1am AEST) it’s not possible to show all of them live at once, even with OTT.

Why not? After the WWC last year, they cut down their channels down to six, with the rest of the matches in the ‘Fixtures’ section on Fetch TV or the Optus Sport App. It is essentially a ‘Red-Button’ service. This allows them to have up to 20 different streams going at once, with only 6 on the ‘traditional’ channels.

Oh I see. I still feel Everton v Bournemouth should be shown live on a traditional channel rather than just as a Red Button option.

The only match that matters on the last day is Chelsea v Wolves.

There are a number of other games too (eg; Man United v Leicester could perhaps be a play-off for a Champions League spot)
