Optus Sport

update

No deal has been reached between Optus and Ten as Ten have not been able to secure any A-League exclusive rights^ with FFA for 20/21 let alone 19/20 season, in fact it looks like Ten won’t be bothering to get any A-League for 19/20 if they are forced to buy the feed (re: dirty feed) from Fox Sports and they can’t do any over-lays (re: as they do with Rugby Union)

20/21 A-League Season .
^Exclusive Saturday night FTA/Streaming
^Exclusive Sunday twilight FTA /Streaming

It should be noted this does not affect pay TV rights, Fox Sports are not giving those up.

The issue is that while Fox Sports no longer wants to do those two games in terms of production (they are happy to take the dirty feed from Ten) they still want the streaming rights for Kayo Sports on a simulcast deal, obviously Ten do not want that as they want to on-sell the streaming rights to Optus Sports (where Optus in returns gives them 1 EPL game for FTA) … this is the issue.

Fox Sports are dragging their knuckles because they fear they won’t be able to sell (con) the public into thinking they have “Every-game live”.

Other news, Optus Sports is going to expand its portfolio of football rights, this means they are going after beIN Sports current range of football rights, stayed tuned for more info.

Currently beIN Sports has the Australian rights to:
International Champions Cup
EFL Championship, League One and League Two
Carabao Cup (EFL Cup)
Scottish Premiership
Bundesliga
Serie A
La Liga

I think Optus is only interested in EFL Championship and Carabao Cup. If the telco gets the rights to both, it will have live matches every week, especially on weekends when EPL is not on due to England internationals or FA Cup commitments.

Is MLS not on ESPN also?

anyway I think the key ones they want would be German, Italian and Spanish leagues staying within the Euro influence.

If 10’s plan was to on-sell the streaming rights to Optus, I can understand why Fox weren’t interested in doing the deal. It’s one thing for Fox to give up rights to a FTA network since it could help them - it’s another thing if said FTA network wants to on-sell some of those rights to a direct rival

Yet Fox Sports want out of doing those two A-League games per round, they can’t have it both ways.

It’s not like Fox Sports is giving up pay TV rights, they will still get those two games from Ten for Fox Sports, how they broadcast it, either a dirty feed from Ten or do their own over-lays (re: simulcast) is up to them, the issue is streaming rights (which is separate to pay TV rights), Ten want the exclusive rights to streaming, the reason is to on-sell those games to Optus (again how Optus does the broadcast re: dirty feed from Ten or does their own over-lays is up to them, most likely be a dirty feed from Ten) in return Ten get 1 game of EPL from Optus (fully branded as Optus however Ten gets the ad revenue),it’s a win win for all concerned and its not like Fox Sports wants to continue to do those two games as full on productions, remember they have serious money issues and are looking to get rid of a lot of content to reduce their production cost issues due to lack of subscribers and a shrinking traditional pay TV market.

Fox aren’t trying to have it both ways - they would be more than happy for 10 to takeover responsibility for producing those 2 games and probably would have no issues with them having exclusive streaming rights if they wanted it just for 10 Play/All Access. However, since 10 want those rights not to benefit themselves but Fox’s main streaming rival (Optus) - Fox (nor any other rational sports network facing the same scenario) would voluntarily agree to an arrangement which allows that to happen

Yes, they are strangly tied into US domestic rights that games produced by ESPN also can be shown on ESPN owned International channels.

Whilst I agree with you do you think ten would’ve flagged the onselling to Optus as part of the deal? I would’ve thought that process was confidential.

Nonetheless… you can see how fox are playing it now their existence is threatened after years and years of anti competitive behavior.

It would not be exclusive streaming on Optus Sports.

Foxtel have realised that traditional pay TV is dying and that streaming is where viewers more and more and relying on to view content, since Kayo is that digital platform that Foxtel/Kayo are pushing the position is “every game” has to be on the platform.

Fox Sports are the issue here not Ten or Optus.

Put it this way, their is also potential for Ten and Telstra to do something together on sporting rights similar to how Nine and Telstra / Seven & Telstra work together for sporting content.

Would not surprise me to see Ten/Telstra team up to get all Rugby Union rights (Internationals, Super Rugby, National Rugby and even QLD/NSW club rugby), Telstra need content for 5G as dos Ten.

Title holders Liverpool will look to win a seventh European title with the same core group that won it all in Madrid less than three months ago. The toughest group may be that of Group F, which includes Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and Slavia Prague.

“We had our most successful season ever across 2018/19 and broke many customer engagement and viewing records, and we anticipate the season ahead to be even bigger,” Optus’ Head of TV and Content, Corin Dimopoulos said.

As the excitement builds for the return of the UEFA Champions League, Optus Sport announces a new free* viewing offer and a brand-new show, as well as confirms a broadcast team that includes some of Australia’s best football talent.

BIGGER OPTUS SPORT HOSTING TEAM

In addition to hosts Richard Bayliss and Mel McLaughlin, and key talent Mark Schwarzer, Michael Bridges, Jules Breach and Kelly Somers, Optus Sport will again call upon a wealth of football experience in its coverage.

Regular contributors Thomas Sorensen, John Aloisi, Paul Okon, Luke Wilkshire, Craig Moore and Ned Zelic will this season be joined by some of the game’s strongest female voices.

After a successful stint hosting Optus Sport’s Women’s World Cup coverage, Amy Duggan and Niav Owens will join the presenting roster, while pundits including Heather Garriock, Alicia Ferguson, Amy Chapman and Georgia Yeoman-Dale will also appear on Optus Sport’s coverage.

Optus Sport will also welcome a new contributor in Kevin Muscat, who will make his debut on the brand-new show Scores on Sunday on Sunday September 15.

“We are proud to have some of the best names in Australian football on Optus Sport, and after our Women’s World Cup talent shone across our tournament coverage, continuing our relationship with them throughout this season was a no-brainer,” said Richard Bayliss, Optus Sport Executive Producer.

WELCOME SCORES ON SUNDAY

Reflecting even further investment in football coverage in Australia, Optus Sport will unveil Scores on Sunday - a dedicated 90-minute football show covering the ins and outs of football both nationally and internationally.

Hosted on rotation by Mel McLaughlin, Richard Bayliss, Niav Owens and Amy Duggan, the program will air live from 8am (AEST) until the end of the Premier League season on Sundays, across all Optus Sport platforms.

It will include regular guests such as John Aloisi, Michael Bridges and Mark Schwarzer, while adding new talent such as Heather Garriock, Alicia Ferguson and Amy Chapman.

“When viewers wake up, they will be able to see the big results from around the globe, whether Premier League, across continental Europe or here in Australia,” added Mr Bayliss.

“We’ll also be discussing all the overnight issues with a great variety of guests both in the studio and joining us from various parts of the world, in addition to original stories and a range of new segments, which will make for an enjoyable 90 minutes.”

The inaugural show this Sunday will be hosted by Bayliss and Mel McLaughlin, and feature John Aloisi, Mark Schwarzer, Michael Bridges and Kevin Muscat.

There’s a new Optus Sport Free Seat channel which has appeared on the Fetch boxes recently too. Noticed it over the weekend, just a static screen at the moment but will show some free matches to non-Optus subscribers they say.

Should roll out the channels as an add on for fetch non Optus customers or Optus customers who are eligible through mobile plans but have non Optus fetch boxes

That said this is a guide and probably not as accurate as the official Optus data.

5G is a gateway … will they open it up to Optus NBN also?

As for Optus HFC, not to go now until it’s closed maybe 6 months of active network use.

I’m glad I’m on the old neighbourhood cable HFC it’s not being closed and has been kept working well over the years.

From November 17, Optus Sport will broadcast 50 live matches per full season and 40 fixtures of the 2019-20 season, which is already underway.

Good for Optus, this is not a content grab for linear tv channels as they now have more than enough content to fill OS1 and OS2, it’s all about streaming minutes per viewer and on-demand sporting content certinally provides such streaming minutes per viewer.
