One News NZ (2016-Feb 2025)

Wendy should do what Hillary did, jump to Newshub, Sky or NZME, but they cutting Budgets too. Maybe radio stint, as she has the voice to read clear precise newscasts.

The transition to the new 1 News weekday presenter setup will begin during August.

I personally read into this as maybe TVNZ is looking at changing Sets? would make sense coming into election time and normally changes have been made to make the set and Election Center.

I think it’s just clumsy wording

Hope they give her a good send off. 14 years at the 6pm is a solid effort and hope it isn’t just ignored. Richard Long, Judy Bailey, Jim Hickey and Peter Williams (anyone else?) all got one. I know they all left on their own accord but to ignore her 6pm departure would be another hit to the gut.

Will watch for one last time. End of an era, reminds me of the Judy Bailey era coming to an end in December 2005.

When Wendy Petrie leaves, it’s like going back to the 1980s where the news on TVNZ was read by either Philip Sherry or Tom Bradley on alternate evenings.

The role of sports anchor was shared by Richard Long and Tony Ciprian, and the weather was presented by either Veronica Allum or Sue Scott (from Avalon Studios in Wellington).

From my point of view, the roles of newsreader and sports anchor have traditionally been dominated by men only while, on the other hand, the weather presentation duties have been dominated by women if the focus was kept on clothing, hairstyle or anatomy.

What do you think?

I just don’t think solo anchors work well for hour long bulletins, 7 days a week. Unless your throwing to a news package with every story, it just starts to sound very monotonous without that second voice.

I agree, I give it a year and they revert back to a duo. Now would be the time to aggressively market Newshub while TVNZ makes the transition.

I quite like what they did tonight after Andrew mcfarlanes report, cut to a wide with him at the desk and essentially finished his report. Stuff like this is a way to make a solo head bulletin better

A classy post from Wendy who is taken this is incredibly well. Going from the face of a product to being a fill-in can’t be easy and while she may not have much choice, she’s handled it very well.

Such a pity no where else has the $$$ / vacancy to snap her up.

@SA_TV & @DJPizarro please take a step back and read again what @PaddyTePou wrote. He is not endorsing it, but highlighting the typical and historic patriarchal structure of news presentation.

There have been cases on both networks where the presentation mix has been broken; i.e. women anchoring solo, women presenting sports and men presenting the weather, especially since the turn of the millennium, so I’m not so sure it’s a massive problem on modern NZ new bulletins… although TVNZ “favouring” Dallow over Petrie might raised eyebrows in the Feminist community. I trust TVNZ’s prepared for any flack?

Update to backdrops on Breakfast. Same pictures but seems they have made them black&white. Not nice…

They’re coloured.

Just flicked through it on demand and noticed no jib shots. Must be a Covid casualty having an operator.

Yes, seems they’ve gone back to original backdrops today.
