Never rated Melissa stokes much as a newsreader but would have her and John as permanent @ six presenters anyday. Love how John wears a vest too

I dont know, I find that John doesn’t suit newsreading and it comes across awkward, hes better off as a host and interviewer. Hes well suited to Breakfast. Jack should get the 6pm gig.

Yeah, John Campbell throwing his arms around while reading the news is very distracting. Not a good newsreader but a great Breakfast host.
It’s interesting because he now just seems to have one presenting style. Back when he was a newsreader on 3 News, he was a lot more formal but with an understated warmth (his broadcast on the day of the September 11 attacks is a masterclass imho). Now there is no difference between his news persona and Breakfast/Campbell Live/Checkpoint persona.

You’re absolutely right. The night he anchored for September 11 was incredible television.
I find his delivery and arm throwing as sort of making us feel part of it, more conversational I like it.

Scotty Stevenson co-hosting Breakfast this morning
The Herald understands Wendy Petrie has lost her job as the 6pm newsreader. This is after much speculation that TVNZ were going to go to a solo presenter for 6pm news.
I hope this is not true and they keep the talent of Wendy, a genuinely good broadcaster for tvnz news, best since Judy Bailey era. Let go of Tame, first, if anyone.

Not guna lie what an absolute kick in the f**king gut. I myself just like Wendy worked during the lock down as an essential worker and then to be thrown out after it all due to cost cutting is an absolute blow. I lost my job this week as well with many others after working during lockdown and it sucks.
There could have been so many other ways to reduce other talent and the amount of personalities on one tv show. I hope she remains somewhere within the newsroom… ahh I can think of so many others that we don’t need that could match her salary.

If they go to one newsreader they need to change the format I reckon a few angles for change sake. I find it boring with just 1 presenter.

Confirmed via TVNZ. 1 presenter. Wendy to work on other TVNZ products as a relief presenter.
I would gone with Melissa over Simon.
Will be interesting to see if people switch to Newshub if they don’t like the change to 1 presenter but I can’t see it happening really.
Wendy would be good on Breakfast as Campbell’s cohost. She has filled in newsreading on Hosking’s ZB show in the past so mustn’t hate the hours and of course when they had her cohosting with Paul Henry way back!
1 NEWS will now have one newsreader from weekdays.
The transition will happen around August.
