if he’s not doing well, why promote him?
Lol no
Reading that article it sounds as if Wendy and Simon have been given the boot but that would be drastic.
If tvnz are going that way, I think give weekdays to Melissa Stokes. Jack Tame weekends. Perhaps they could offer Simon Q+A, but let’s face it Mediaworks are probably already sniffing around offering him a show on Magic Talk
Can’t see 1 newsreader doing an hour being any good yes they do it at the weekend but it’s boring. Having the two adds something I don’t know what.
Why sack on air talent? I’m sure they would be happy enough to take a pay cut, if they were to reduce on air talent get rid of Breakfast weather host, could even do without the newsreader.
Problem with TVNZs newsroom is there is so much on air staff that do a multitude of on air work, reduce/cut that too. I dunno I just say slash salaries and wages. Keep Simon and Wendy.
Too bad Simon Dallow is far too much of a professional to even consider such a role.
Yes but would you ever have thought Peter Williams would? Lol
I find their weekend news great with Melissa only & her interactions with the sports & weather presenter. It makes 2 newsreaders on weekdays seem unnecessary IMO.
Agree with this, quite liked how they did it during the lockdown without Matt.
I doubt a single news presenter will work this time around. It failed during the Bailey era of 2004, the news department should be protected at all costs, it’s not like Netflix will ever do LIVE local news. Protect what makes you stand out from your competitors.
TVNZ have had too pull Q+A from nights and put it back too the Sunday morning slot because of a drastic drop in audience ratings. It’s surprising they still have him there. People don’t like him on it.
I personally think we will see it go back too a single newsreader. TVNZ were happy enough to cut Bernadette a few years ago from the weekend lineup, so why wouldn’t they do it now. It’d be too expensive having 2 news readers on in a world like today where we are on the verge of the biggest recession we’ve seen! 14-years is enough I reckon, time too pass the hat onto someone else.
Doubt that Simon or Wendy would have anywhere to go, sadly. Everyone is cutting costs.
No. People just don’t like Q+A in primetime. I don’t think the format works as a show in prime time. We like to think we are all intellectuals but the reality is most people don’t want to watch an hour of political interviews in prime time anymore. It’s a Sunday morning show, much like the Meet The Press, Face The Nation etc are in the US.
Does it mean people are not engaged politically? No. But if political content is going to reach the masses it has to be presented in a compelling way to teach most of the public. Q+A is a political junkie show.
My 2-Cents is I would expect them to retain Wendy and cut Simon if they do go to 1 reader.
They won’t go to an all male news hour, (with Andrew and Daniel).
I doubt there’ll be much on-air changes… I haven’t read it, but how much of that story is the usual speculation from that newspaper, over and above the cutbacks already announced last week?
Honestly, the way TVNZ is going I wouldn’t be surprised if they pull the ethnicity/diversity card.
They might bring back Daniel Faitaua or Jenny Suo - both would come much cheaper than keeping Simon or Wendy.
Thoughts?
My understanding is that a single reader bulletin is very much under consideration. I don’t know if it’s Progressed as far as NZH reports though.
It’s Bernadine, not Bernadette.
TVNZ newsroom has ballooned over the years since 2007 both in back office and on air under HONACA John Gillespie, lost its way, got state of the art studio, but no talent where as Newshub went the other way. Best to merge TVNZ and RNZ. Wendy and Simon can carry on as they did during Lockdown, working 4 on, 3off etc. Tame is not worth the newsreader desk, too many on Breakfast, 7Sharp and Fair Go. Also outsource all Maori and Pacific News through single service provider for all Broadcasting outlets, buy raw material. Hope the new boss is brave enough to cut through red tape get back on track with real 1News!
The news department has always faced cuts ie in 2009 with the GFC, I doubt it has ballooned to 2007 levels. All Pacific/Maori programmes are already outsourced after 2014 review. Te Karere remains in house and should be protected from out sourcing as it’s part of the 1News machine.
Te Karere being separate from other Maori media voices helps with plurality, which is essential in Maoridom.
You need to think of Maori news as a hui @Akash_Prakash, rather than a typical news machine. One outlet for indigenous news will fall flat on it’s face because it will inevitably result in one perspective. Can you imagine TVNZ, Newshub, Stuff, NZME & RNZ etc to be pooled in the same way?
Consolidation will not save local voices. We, the audience, have that job. Source local media.
Production of News gathering and Viewer numbers are important as is its Editorial integrity, but linear Television News is no longer what it used to be for source of information for anyone, unless you’re 70 years or over, the demand on Apps, Smartphone, with tagline, Anytime, Anywhere, it’s just that now. New Zealand is over stocked for News Outlets, all with different angles, except for when it’s about the current Government!
