18 October 1995: The Seven Network announces that it has signed Ten News ‘ Melbourne newsreader David Johnston to front Seven Nightly News in Melbourne from January 1996.
If I’m not mistaken this signing prompted then solo Melbourne presenter Jennifer Keye to leave Seven. David Johnston was eventually joined by Anne Fulwood as co-anchor.
yes the story goes that the plan was to pair him up with Jennifer Keyte but nobody told her that, apparently. So she left, and ended up going to Nine.
David Johnston read the news solo from 1996 until Anne Fulwood came onboard sometime around middle of 1999 before Peter Mitchell replaced them both at the end of 2000.
Ten must have known something was up when David Johnston was featured in a Seven News interview in mid-October 1995 to talk about the 20th anniversary of death of the Balibo Five (some of who would have been former colleagues of his) and it looked like he was talking from within a Seven studio/control room or something, so he was on Seven’s premises just prior to the announcement coming out.
