27 September 2009–Channel Nine has refreshed its on-air presentation with the dots being changed to spheres, though dots were being made smaller. As well with this, they have changed their slogan, Welcome Home. This also began to re-use the iconic, ‘Still the One’ theme tune.

I know that the 2009-12 On-Air Presentation package for Channel Nine (what I’d probably call Generation 1 of “Welcome Home” with the 2nd, obviously being the colourful 2012-15 package) recieved fairly mixed reactions at the time, certainly I wouldn’t suggest a return to this style today.

However, this more familiar, traditional “Channel Nine-style” graphics package was probably something the network really needed back then if they were to rebuild their image after a rough few years - including much of 2009 itself.

29 September 2001 - Channel Seven telecasted its last AFL match, the Grand Final between Essendon and Brisbane Lions. Sandy Roberts, Bruce Mcavaney and Jason Dunstall called the match.

…until round one, 2007 (Melbourne vs St Kilda).

Also, the Geelong Cats won that year’s flag (Grand Final that year was televised by Ten) thrashing Port Adelaide by a record 119 points.

In 2012, the Sydney Swans defeated Hawthorn in the first Grand Final to feature the revamped entertainment schedule after the Meatloaf furore the previous year.

And finally, last year, the West Coast Eagles came from five goals down in the first quarter to beat Collingwood for its fourth flag.

Lewis Jetta’s two premiership medals came exactly six years apart.

Also, in the United Kingdom, Robert Brydges became the third person to win the top prize on the British version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?.

2012 was a big ratings Grand Final involving Sydney

Between 2007 and 11, Grand Finals alternated between 10 and 7 with 10 showing odd-numbered year Grand Finals and 7 showing even-numbered years

Didn’t rate as massively as 2005 did. I would think a factor behind that year’s decider was the presence of the Swans in the Grand Final in the first place. They weren’t the best team over the course of the regular season, but won the match that mattered.

And the other network would televise the Brownlow Medal. Whichever station did the drawn Grand Final would also do the replay (as was the case with Seven in 2010).

As it turned out, Ten televised the Cats’ three flags of 2007, 2009 and 2011. Hawthorn and Collingwood won the Grand Finals televised by Seven in 2008 and 2010 (replay) respectively.

I didn’t watch the 2007 game as I was on a plane in overseas but did Ten use the 5 minute warning even if it was a blowout match? Did Anthony Hudson, Stephen Quartermain call the game at the mcg?

I agree That 2012 and 2018 had good epic GFs on 7. 2012 was a year that 10 didn’t have the afl. And 7 used countdown clocks instead

Yes, Ten always put the five-minute warning on even if it was a blowout match.

Tim Lane and Anthony Hudson were the callers in 2007 (from memory).

Quarters and Tim did 2009 and Quarters/Huddo did 2011.

September 30 - 1989 - In one of the greatest Grand Finals of all time, Hawthorn defeated Geelong in a bruising and high-scoring affair. Dennis Cometti and Ian Robertson called the last Grand Final under the VFL banner

September 30 2006 - Channel 10 broadcasted the 2006 AFL Grand Final between West Coast Eagles and Sydney Swans. In one of the most thrilling Grand Final finishes, the Eagles fought off a fast-finishing Swans to win by just 1 point. “Who would’ve thought the sequel would be just as good as the original” Huddo’s iconic call at the final siren. The game was called by Quarters and Huddo.

September 30 2017 - Richmond broke a 37 year drought easily defeating Adelaide by 48 points setting off wild celebrations on Swan Street similar to what we saw on Saturday.
