9 July 1970: ABC presents Project Australia, marking the launch of the microwave link between the east and west coasts of Australia, allowing the direct transmission of program material across the country for the first time. It also had the benefit of allowing subscriber trunk dialling (STD) across the country, instead of telephone users having to go through an operator.
16 July 1956: HSV7 begins its first regular test pattern transmission ahead of its planned official launch in November. It was the first of the Melbourne channels to commence regular test transmission.
18 July 1992: The Late Show debuts on ABC, beginning a two-year run. Featuring some founding members of the D-Generation (those that didn’t go across to Fast Forward) from their ABC/Seven shows and breakfast radio slot on EON-FM.
The show went for 40 episodes and won two Logie Awards and created a legacy of television comedy that continues today in shows like Have You Been Paying Attention and The Cheap Seats
19th July 1987, 35 Years Ago today, the ABC’s long running Music Program Countdown ended with it’s Annual Music & Video Awards, Which Saw Molly Meldrum Lifted his Trademark Akubra Hat off to Reveal a Bald ahead to Honor Midnight Oil never Performed on the Show, However the Oils did Perform on ABC’s other iconic Show Recovery 11 Years Later.
