On This Day

May 23 2014 — after 6 months, Breakfast show Wake Up along with revived Ten Eyewitness News Early and Morning Bulletins got axed due to very low ratings and revenue. 150 people lost their jobs at Network 10. James Mathieson and Natarsha Belling thanked viewers for their wonderful support at Wake Up.

Did anyone actually watch Wake Up?

From what I recall, the reports on ACA (an impartial source of information, I know…) pointed out that kids shows on the ABC like “I Got A Rocket” actually received more viewers than Wake Up on Ten!

So a cartoon on the ABC rated better than Wake Up.

ABC Kids, but yes.

From memory, I Got A Rocket probably aired on ABC3 (now ABC ME) at the time Wake Up was struggling on Ten. Not inaccurate to include their children’s programming multichannels as part of “the ABC” in any case.

I actually wish Wake Up survived and was given time to grow.

Wasn’t Wake Up with Paul Henry?

No that was Breakfast

Currently a cartoon on ABC rates better than ABC Breakfast and even Sunrise and Today after 7 day consolidated.

Adam Boland’s autobiography points out a lot of the mistakes with the show like having the Newsreader in a different city and having guests travelling to the Northern Beaches instead of Pyrmont. There were other issues with mental illness and firing of a Presenter (who incidentally ended back at Ten a few years later).

Also if it actually worked, weekend editions would have been produced somewhere else due to the Clubhouse needing the “studio” space.

It was trying hard to separate itself from the failed Breakfast show before it but ended up a show not sure of itself either.

Let’s just say it was a very expensive flop and resulted in 10 axing most of its news division. A lot of people left the network after that show went.

It was also the first day that Seven started displaying a logo watermark on the bottom right corner of the screen. Oh, the shock and horror!

Wake Up could’ve been a serious competitor to Sunrise and Today had it lasted a while. A pity the show was axed after 6 months.
