On This Day

… wasn’t Lane a replacement for Ernie Sigley?

not at this stage. The Don Lane Show in its initial form ran on Monday nights. Sigley was on Tuesday & Thursday. (Graham Kennedy was on Mondays and Wednesdays before his hasty departure. Jimmy Hannan took over the Wednesday slot)

I think you might be thinking of the following year when Ernie Sigley was dumped by Kerry Packer and Lane’s show was extended to fill one of Sigley’s slots.

Ahh, that will explain the much publicised feud between Ernie and Don.

13 May 1968: The Seven Network launches another attempt at a daytime soap, Motel. Although it was made in Sydney it debuted in Melbourne on this day, with Sydney following two weeks later, then Brisbane in June. It was also picked up by various regional stations but the show only lasted 132 episodes.

It did, however, launch the acting career of a young Jack Thompson.

20 May 1994: Darwin becomes the last capital city in Australia to receive SBS, launching on this day. As far as I know there was no special program for the launch, unlike when SBS began in every other city.

Its pity as NEW10 launched at a time when local production was ending and being centralized to Sydney or Melbourne. Part from a few local show in its early days, not mush was ever produces out of Ten Perth for the Network.

A change in ownership to Frank Lowy’s Northern Star group before NEW10 got to air probably did not favours for local production, either. Had ownership stayed with Kerry Stokes there might have been a greater push for local production but once it became owned by eastern states interests any incentive for local production was probably lost.

… given that when I visited the station in early 1989 it was operating out of temporary huts, they had their hands full just getting to (and staying on) air and didn’t really have much time to think about “local production”

One show they produced was Kids Company which started out as a Saturday morning kids show. it later moved to weekday afternoons when the network introduced Video Hits.

as @BJT2 mentioned, there was some local production in the early days. As well as the news service there was a weekday afternoon show (Our Town), music show (Airplay) and Kids Company. Pretty good I think for a new player operating out of temporary huts. It seemed like it initially had intention to have a focus on local content but the change in ownership and a looming recession seemed to hit what local content it did have. Our Town and Airplay didn’t last too long.

21 May 1958: ABC officially opens its new ABV2 studios in Ripponlea. Up until then, ABV was operating out of various makeshift locations across Melbourne, including a small temporary studio in Broadcast House (home of 3LO and 3AR) in the CBD.

Why did the ABC choose Ripponlea as the site for its Melbourne TV studio? I know it’s close to Nepean Highway (duplication was still a decade away) and Elsternwick station on the Sandringham rail line.

Still looking good.
