Olympics Rights 2024-32 (Nine)

Who said they would be in money woes?

Nobody, but you’re not reading the posts slowly. I’m suggesting they could be, because of the ridiculously combined contractual fees that would arise and risks from their respective performances, not to mention what the environment will look like in years time.

The IOC here for meetings and presentations from all networks. No bids will be expected this week.

In cricket news… all bidders asked to resubmit bid by Thursday. Clearly they were below what CA wanted.

Seven prepared to walk away from cricket. In negotiations with lower tier sports to life their profile. I’m thinking NBL. Not sure what else in summer is available.

Points from the article:

  • The IOC will spend two days in Sydney meeting with the networks
  • Deal with include all games (summer/winter) until 2032
  • Executives at all networks will meet with two key stakeholders from the IOC
  • No bids will be made this week
  • Sources say Paramount is not interested due to the changing media audience

Good cover for “we won’t be in this market for that long”

I think Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman Series is available, as will Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship golf (remember Nine only signed for a two-year FTA broadcast deal).

Paramount has been a flop here. Nine or Seven it is but with Nine interested in cricket and recently re-signed a long-term deal with tennis Australia, it is hard to see if Nine gets the Olympics rights

This is the key quote about where unknown sources think things stand:

“ Nine, which flew Today Show host Karl Stefanovic to Switzerland for a pitch for the rights in April, wants to secure the rights to all games until 2032 in Brisbane. It is unclear if Seven is interested in acquiring a package for multiple games, or if it wants to buy just the Paris 2024 Games and the Milan 2026 Winter Olympics. Sources close to the talks suggested Paramount is not interested in securing a long-term deal given the media market is constantly changing and audiences are increasingly watching sports content online.”

I think Nine are actually more interested in the Olympics than the cricket.

By all reports, (if true) they are only looking for Test Matches and nothing else.

Which might mean they are just adding a bid into the mix to keep the others on their toes but going hard for the Olympics.

It also might come down to which deal is signed off first. If Olympics fall to seven, then they be out of cricket for sure, or vice versa for nine.

Do we actually know dates of when this will be announced? Who jumps first?

Very brave of the IOC including 2032 in the package given the inflation environment.

Feels like the networks do not care about cricket and it’s headed for the bargain bin for digital channel filler.

Cricket killed the golden goose! :man_facepalming:

That’s what you get when you go with Foxtel.

Netball will rue the day. Rugby is just getting back on its feet. Soccer is still a basket case and will take a few more years to get back up to a Tier B sport.

You’d think the rights fees will be back loaded. The IOC tend to offer these multi-games packages like they do with NBC.

You can draw a direct line to the sandpaper gate and how clumsy the decision to go behind a paywall at that time was.

Netball needed the money. They got it. The sport could have been insolvent without it in Australia.

If Nine gets the Olympics, good luck to them. They haven’t aired a big multi-sport event since the London 2012 Olympic Games shared with Foxtel before Stan and 9Now launched.

Let’s assume 10 / Paramount win cricket, you would think Seven (having also been unable to re-acquire the tennis) would be desperate for the Olympics and IMO disagree with the article that (like recent sports deals) would try to lock-in a long term partnership. So IOC could be the real ‘bidding war’ over coming months with Nine by the looks of it. If that occurs, you’d think Nine wouldn’t ‘blow their brains out’ as some executives here like to use lately considering they’ve just won the TA contract.

The promotion value that’ll come from having Brisbane 2032 is huge.

Could add the Australian Baseball league - rights wouldn’t be exxy, games go for 3 hours and it adds some fresh content. The standard of play is also quite good, and if they produce a good broadcast it could be onsold to the MLB network (who have no games during the northern hemisphere winter to show).

The ABL also has some good MLB prospects playing so there is interest.

no bids are being are being sought yet for the games, and cricket bids must eb in by 5pm Thursday - cricket will be announced first.

100%. the real money in the deal is not LA or Paris, and the winter games are essentially a giveaway. The real value will be 2032. the opening ceremony of Sydney had something like 99.3% audience share.

that is a massive audience and advertisers will pay though the nose for that

I wouldn’t be surprised if the IOC fishing expedition is to sound out whether they open the rights up to out-of-market players too.

Not to mention (looking long-term) Nine’s NRL rights agreement expires at the end of the 2027 season. Considering they’ve locked up the Aus Open/Tennis Australia rights until 2029, a successful aggressive push for the Olympics rights could well come back to bite them financially in a few years’ time when rights negotiations for their major sports assets are in full swing.
