that’s how the news cycle works most of the time
So she forgot that Seven never broadcast the Paralympics until Rio?
Is it? It offers PA an opportunity to correct the record and take the heat out of the story
That’s what I was trying to get at, if it weren’t in the news cycle so much (in a sort of negative context thanks largely to Georgie’s post), would PA have made / needed to make a statement I wondered.
If no one had asked or made comment about it and they had nothing to add or announce (which is basically their position at the moment based on the statement they did make), then probably not - but that’s not particularly special or unusual. They’ve responded in light of the coverage the matter has got and it’s highly likely that someone would have asked the question anyway.
The question Georgie should perhaps be asking is of her own employers - are they really going to dump their commitment to the Paralympics just because they no longer have the Olympics.
Matt Carmichael has always been a big supporter of the Paralympic movement. Could he move to Nine if Nine get the rights?
Exactly - the reason why Paralympics TV coverage has increased so much over the last decade is due to what Channel 4 did with the 2012 London Paralympics (and has built on in subsequent Paralympics) in giving the Paralympics the promotion and coverage it deserves rather than being seen as an ‘afterthought’ following the Olympics.
The IOC could do themselves a favour and schedule the paralympics before the Olympics as a hype event. It has always seemed weird to me that they wait a month after the main show has left town to hold it. The audience are over it by then. I’m sure the host city would appreciate a type of warm up event to resolve any issues with infrastructure.
There is also that weird period leading up to the Olympics where the world’s media is trying to build hype, but there is nothing substantive to report on. So we get stupid stories about athlete love triangles or nitpicking the hosts readiness and political issues. It really hurts the Olympic brand.
There is a decent argument that it shouldn’t be two events and that the Olympics should make better efforts to integrate paralympic events into the broader Olympic Games.
It will only ever be secondary to the Olympics when it’s run separately - and it doesn’t deserve to be, extend the length of the games and bring in the Paralympic events.
As much as people see the Commonwealth Games as a bit of a legacy, having para-athletes compete alongside able-bodied athletes has been such a successful move and something the IOC should look to emulate.
I do enjoy the Commonwealth Games with able-bodied and para-athletes competing in one single competition
New promo just aired, showing the same promo but had 3AW, The Age, 9/9Now and I think Stan at the end.
That would result in a significant chunk of the Paralympic programme being ditched and the Olympics becoming even more bloated, with Paralympic events likely seen as less important than the Olympic events.
As things are reusing hotel rooms and facilities gives the Paralympics the ability to put on the biggest event they can.
Back to the rights and from reports it seems the 2024 Games are being sold on a standalone basis, so that actually should open up the bidders and if it is someone other than Nine gives them effectively a test event to see if it is viable for them to cover the event without covering the Olympics. The fact the rights will probably come in at around a tenth of what is paid for the Olympics means the threshold for profitability will be much lower.
yikes, while I am not complaining, as it’s a better logo, but that’s the older 4BC logo! How did that happen?
Updated with Perth that is also the old 6PR logo
where is that from?
Melbourne also had the old 3AW logo
