Olympics Rights 2024-32 (Nine)

I feel as if its a case of their damned it they do, damned if they don’t.

I remember reading many comments about people complaining about Seven having the Olympics, and they should let someone else do it. All that kinda jazz.

Either way theres always going to be someone that’ll have a whinge somewhere about whomever is going to broadcast the games.

Lmao at that tweet, name a single sport that Seven covers well.

(inb4 horse racing. Horse racing isn’t a sport, it’s money laundering)

Well, I would’ve said tennis and olympics, but…

Fair play on Tennis - I think Nine have emulated (stolen?) that formula which gives it credibility.

Haven’t been a fan of Seven’s Olympics coverage, but I think it’s wrong to jump on the fan bandwagon for either (and any!) network. Nine’s NRL coverage is dire, for instance.

Not necessarily for pay TV. Keep in mind that with Rio 2016, Seven actually ran a “7plus Premium” option that cost $20.

I’m surprised they didn’t bother with that for Tokyo, especially as it was in the correct timezone for us - apart from all the “Live and Free” rhetoric that’s only intensified in recent years (from them in particular, as they’ve decided not to put a premium tier on what is a huge platform at 7plus now…).

other general thoughts…

  • The effect Stan has on the deal is… completely unknown, especially later in the deal. Who knows what television and particularly the streaming market will even look like in 2032 especially. For 2024 though, it’ll be interesting as to how much they put onto 9Now vs. possibly Stan.

  • I wouldn’t read too much into “no rings”. I don’t think they’re allowed to show it on their watermark until one year before the games (or roughly so). Be patient.

Same with all the stuff about “oh, they’re using Seven’s video”. Remember, the IOC owns it, broadcasters don’t get any copyright at all into their coverage.

  • The non-exclusive bit of the audio rights would simply be to allow ABC to do a deal - and I guess that will be on a more ad-hoc basis; there’s not exactly pressure to lock that up for eight years. One wonders whether eventually the ABC will put more effort into the Paralympic offer instead, but there’s a matter of pride as the national broadcaster to cover the main event on radio too, as well as having coverage commercial radio can’t entirely reach.

Of course Nine would have to sublicense commercial rights anyway in places they don’t have a station (eg. to fiveAA in Adelaide, and more generally across their syndication network), but that’s not the same thing. If they’re desperate to not blank out their talk network, I guess things like NTS (*shudder*) are an option for fuller coverage too.

Nine’ll do an alright job, at least with the Australian coverage; there’s too much pride in the networks to not do so.

As for the Commonwealth Games… I’m sure there’ll be interest from the other networks in the 2026 one in our backyard… but it’ll be lucky to exist in 2030.

Games will be around in 2030. CWG are announcing 2030 and 2034 this year or next.

Well, I think there’s a good likelihood of 2030 at least - especially if Hamilton in Canada gets to reprise its inaugural Empire Games hosting from 100 years prior. I’m a little less optimistic about 2034, but the fact that they are looking at multi-country bids and are making things extremely flexible for hosts (more so than the IOC is) may help it.

With the IOC deal now settled, it will be interesting to see if Nine will be interested in broadcasting the Paralympic Games for the same 2024-2032 period, or leave them to the other networks. Nine has the resources to cover those Games, although the dates of the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan (March 6-15) overlaps with the start of the NRL season.

I expect Nine will broadcast Brisbane Paralympics 2032 as a minimum.

I would think that Nine would want to get the Paralympics as well and I would expect they would use Dylan Alcott as well given his Paralympic experience over Wheelchair Basketball and Para Athletics.

Alcott is employed with the network and I’m sure they’ll use him to commentate during the Olympics

wouldn’t be surprised if this is what gets nine off mt cootha - waiting to secure a prime spot prior to other broadcasters claiming them

Will be interesting if Nine was to get a studio like Nine’s North Sydney sports studio in Brisbane… would they use it or would they get an outside broadcast spot with views of the river etc?

Intresting. I assume Nine will have 2 channels of content, 9Now has everything 1080p with ads and Stan Sport has everything 4K ad-free, with some docos maybe based on that?

Will be interesting to see though - because Seven used 7, 7two, 7mate (and I think 7flix as well for Tokyo?) for linear content, and the rest on 7+.

Would Nine do the same and have content on 9, 9Gem, and 9Go? Can’t see them running Olympics content on 9Rush and 9Life

Only for Perth due to news/AFL. Other states didn’t use 7flix at all. Maybe 9Rush used for Perth but I think the east will stick to 9, 9Gem and 9Go.

So the same sort of thing as the just-gone Aus Open, yeah?

Nine will have the flexiblity to promote the Paris 2024 Olympics, Milan 2026 Winter Olympics and the LA 2028 Olympics during the Australian Open Tennis in the summer months. Nine didn’t used the Olympic Rings watermark for summer 2011/12 during their cricket coverage and just the standard WWOS watermark but did so for summer 2009/10.

Stan could have the Olympic Channel and Olympic Films content for documentaries.
