Olympics Coverage - History

Seven showed a full replay of last night’s Boomers loss after the Closing Ceremony

10:00 after Australia’s Cheapest Weddings.

So the focus I guess now turns to the Paralympics which begins in 3 weeks. I wonder how much coverage 7 are going to provide?

Only 7TWO will have live coverage of the Paralympic Games as Seven and 7mate will concentrate on the AFL finals and the Davis Cup world group playoff from Sydney on September 16-18. I hope Seven can show some events on its 7Sport app (the Olympics app is based on the one provided by the IOC and I don’t think it will be retained for the Paralympics).

What’s the point of doing a prime time replay, because people couldn’t watch it live…to only start it after 10pm, so people can’t watch live again?

So stupid. In saying that, most of the closing ceremony looked very average.

Surely “counter programming” is showing something which would appeal to a different audience, not the same. The closing ceremony would have rated better I’m sure.

The opening ceremony was a bit of a dissapointment IMO and Rio’s closing ceremony didn’t really bring the carnival until after the flame had been extinguished, but I loved the Tokyo presentation - hopefully a sign of what’s to come in 2020.

The 4.0 18-49 demo rating and audience of 16.85 million for NBC’s closing ceremony telecast were the second lowest of the Rio Olympics.

Ouch. Seven didn’t insert any ads during the live coverage of the Closing Ceremony yesterday unlike the Opening Ceremony where they had ads at inappropiate times.

I felt that doing athlete interviews via satellite really missed the mark. This was my biggest issue with anchoring the coverage from Sydney, plus the fact that the set really didn’t work for the Olympics.
I wonder if Mel knew when she signed on with Seven and its Olympic coverage that she would be stuck in a Sydney studio working till 3 am.

Seven will launch a Paralympic app tomorrow (Wednesday) to stream events from next month’s Rio Paralympic Games. Unlike the Olympics app it was entirely created in-house, and you will be able to watch all events at no extra cost.

Late but do you know who hosted the coverage after Mel and before Jim on 7?

Todd Woodbridge did the overnights I believe.

The grand total of online streams over Seven’s 17-day coverage of the Rio Olympics is a whopping 37.7 million!

NBC claiming success.
NBC claimed that the Rio Olympics was the “most successful media event in history” with an average audience delivery of 27.5 million viewers – the “second-highest primetime audience for an non-US summer games.”

NBC said its Olympics’ digital coverage also set event records with 3.3 billion total streaming minutes, 2.71 billion live streaming minutes and 100 million unique users.
I wonder how many “streaming minutes” that translates into.

TV by the Numbers has detailed breakdown of NBC’s Olympics coverage since Atlanta 1996. The article says the Rio Games were the lowest rated and least watched on the network since Sydney 2000.

Seven to deliver all-encompassing coverage across multiple platforms for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio
Seven is set to create and deliver a comprehensive and technologically advanced coverage of the Paralympic Games in Rio to all Australians across multiple platforms.

Building on its coverage of the Olympic Games, Seven will deliver live coverage of the Paralympic Games on broadcast television and through the network’s digital products. This will be Seven’s first Paralympic Games.

Tim Worner, CEO and Managing Director of Seven West Media, said: “We are delighted to be able to bring this extraordinary event to all Australians. The Paralympic Games take sports to a new level, they inspire and we take with great pride our responsibility to provide the Games to all Australians across all forms of delivery platforms.”

Commenting, Kurt Burnette, Event Director, Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games, said: “We will deliver a coverage that takes every moment of the Paralympic Games to all Australians across a range of digital devices. We take great pride in our partnership and our newly formed agreement as a key sponsor of the Australian Paralympic Team. We look forward to working with them and our marketing and advertising partners in broadcasting an inspiring event in September. We are backing in great Australians.”

Seven will broadcast the Paralympic Games on 7TWO and across the Screens of Seven with 7Live. It all begins with the Opening Ceremony from the Maracana Stadium in Rio at 7:00am, AEST on 8 September. A key component of Seven’s commitment to coverage of the Paralympic Games across television and connected devices is the launch today of a new free app: 7Live featuring the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.

Commenting, Clive Dickens, Seven’s Chief Digital Officer, said: “The extensive broadcast and digital coverage of the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games will be showcased via a new set of digital products - ‘7live featuring the Paralympic Games’ - and we are really excited to showcase the extraordinary talents of these inspirational athletes.”

The new app is created and developed as part of Seven’s suite of digital products for iPhone, Android and the web. It is available from today in the app store, Google Play or at www.7live.com.au. It will include a live simulcast stream of 7TWO’s extensive and exclusive coverage of the Paralympic Games along with medal tallies, profiles of the Australian athletes and video on demand highlights.

The live streaming of Seven’s coverage will also be available on multiple devices through PLUS7 and the 7Tennis app. Seven will also be delivering coverage and engaging with fans via 7TWO’s social channels on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

All of Seven’s content will be free to all users on all devices.

So three* channels for the Olympics, and just one for the Paralympics?

Pathetic. Give the ABC back the rights

The ABC used two channels in 2012 but that’s because they split their coverage up whereby the morning (evening in the UK) coverage + a nightly highlights show would air on ABC1 with a few hours of evening (morning in the UK) coverage on ABC2. The biggest problem was all of their coverage was delayed for non-East Coast viewers, something which seems that won’t happen this time.

Even Channel 4 which set the benchmark for Paralympics coverage in 2012 are only using their main channel to show coverage aside from an audio described/signed simulcast of the Opening and Closing Ceremony on 4seven. They are though streaming a lot of additional coverage online which goes to my next point. Why are Seven releasing another app when all it’s doing is carrying the channel streams + highlights - both are things which could be incorporated into the Plus7 and/or 7 Sport apps. It would be a completely different matter if it was carrying streams of the various events which @JohnsonTV suggested it was going to.

Er, yes. You expect three channel blanket coverage? You’re dreaming. Even one dedicated channel is a lot.
