From what I remember reading, Seven HD was in 576p (rather than the 1080i of Nine/Ten HD) during the first five or six years of Digital TV.
Seven switched their HD channel to 1080i in 2007 and they were the first network (beating both Nine and Ten to the punch) to do breakaway programing on their HD channel in off-peak timeslots around October of that year.
They didnt make a huge song and dance when they âlaunchedâ 7HD in AFL states earlier this year. It just happened didnât it?
Given I am sure you will have hosts and commentators saying that you can watch this or that on 7 in HD over on Channel 70, I cannot see how they cannot do 70 as a main channel simulcast. It is different for AFL as it is only ever one game at a time but to say that you have athletics on this channel, hockey on this channel and table tennis on this other channel it makes no sense to have state based variants to that. So i think we will just wake up one morning (probably when the games start) and it will be fine⌠I hope.
The last I checked, there are often different Saturday & Sunday AFL games (accommodating for local AFL teams and games from state based leagues) shown at the same time on different channels in different markets while running a full simulcast of Seven as the HD channel in some metro markets and a full simulcast of 7mate as the HD channel in (most) others.
With that in mind, I canât see why Seven couldnât do something similar for the Olympics by continuing the two tier system for HD during Rio.
The difference is there are different commentators/hosts. Presumably that will not be the case (based on todayâs release) for the Olympics - or at least hosts who would reference HD for only half the states on a specific channel
Question is, where will the main âhost positionâ (studio) be?
Rio? Melbourne? Sydney?
I know 7 Sport studio (7 Racing, AFL shows & many other events) is at HSV-7. Then you have the national News & Current Affairs stutios at ATN-7. Then thereâs the main set-up in Rio (e.g.) Joh Griggs in Beijing, 2008.
Hamish McLachlan will need to be in Melbourne for the AFL wonât he?
Seeing as Bruce McAvaney & Basil Zempilas (both are callers), are already taken out⌠@TV.Cynic
Really? Seems like a bit of a waste of money given that literally everything is being anchored from Australia.
What will it be used for? The big interviews will all be via satellite on Sunrise, other interviews can be done on location (ie pool/trackside, in the athletes village) and the news team will have access to all the facilities they need at the IBC.
