Can non-rights holders such as Seven and 10 show these TikTok clips in their news bulletins?
Is there any basis for all the suspicion on Pan Zhanle’s world record. Otherwise… racist much?
Didn’t we learn any lessons on hubris after Mac Horton’s podium protest?
People have been suspicious of Chinese swimmers for a long time now to the point where it’s almost become an assumed position for many to adopt. It doesn’t help that they’ve got a fairly patchy record when it comes to testing positive for banned substances in the sport too (23 swimmers tested positive to something in Tokyo, that was put down (and accepted) to the food served at the event)
There seem to be a lot of people who think that in the post-super-suit era that WRs are incapable of being lowered by any decent margin too
Its interesting that Katie Ledecky has the top 10(?) fastest 1500m times, yet no one seems to question her ability or doping status…
People are stupid and buy into the stereotype that all Chinese people are dopers or spies or whatever . I find that people who are over certain age and of certain political tend to purpetrate this.
The coverage on this from most media has been absolutely atrocious.
Misleading headlines trying to give people the perception that Khelif is a trans athlete gaming the system or something - no - the problem was the boxing authorities putting an absolutely arbitrary and unscientific testosterone level test in place.
Overwhelmingly testosterone level tests have been disqualifying African athletes - as the benchmarks for “normal” are set in western nations where testing is more common. The Olympics aren’t about normal - you’re talking elite athletes - swimmers with feet that are borderline flippers aren’t being disqualified, but people who trained for years get disqualified over an arbitrary test?
This stuff is complex, far more than most media reporting - as much as people think that sex is absolutely no questions binary, or “they can tell” - chromosomes are not a perfect 1:1 determiner, there’s not an exact number of testosterone beyond which you are male, and sometimes genitalia are ambiguous - not helped by practices on those born intersex to have “corrective” surgery.
Sports have been making up rules as they go in recent years - it’s just not tested science, and random sports bodies each setting unique standards is not a way to come to fair outcomes for any athlete. The IOC rightly saw that there wasn’t due process in the IBA’s procedures.
I have been watching highlights on the Olympics’ official YouTube channel. I notice that the videos are curated for each country. So for Australia you get the highlights of medal performances as well as group matches of hockey, rugby sevens, women’s football and basketball involving Australia. Occasionally highlights from other sports are also included in the playlist if they involve big names, such as Novak Djokovic, Simone Biles, or the USA men’s basketball team.
I think there are dozens of video highlights clips that are hidden, and you have to see the rest on 9Now.
Out of curiosity I had a look at the streams available on 9Now; at last you can watch the more obscure sports such as judo, handball and 3x3 basketball.
Aussie up for doubles bronze and sailing gold now, women’s water polo, men’s basketball and men’s hockey and canoe cross later… All this before midnight yet after 9pm. Already had tons of swimming and especially first day of track and field heats and heaps overnight tonight including finals… A good day to be utilising 9Now or Stan Sport! Especially the left of field sports, as while Nine have been doing a good job of giving most at least a turn on-air somewhere, it’ll be hard tonight with the swimming>athletics>basketball>hockey>water polo>canoe for all of prime time on 9 and Gem.

Can we please rename this thread to Games of the XXXIII Olympiad? Rolls straight off the tongue.
Cheers, mate. Easy to search for it now.

I agree that tennis doesn’t belong in the Olympic Games
If you take out Tennis… then you could take out Golf, Basketball, Hockey , Soccer, Rugby and soon to be Cricket in 2028. Basically every team sport.
Tennis has been Olympic sport for well over 100 years. I say keep it in.
I guess it means a lot for most players to be actually playing for their country and a chance to win a medal
Also, it’s important to have a diverse selection of sports to accommodate the majority of countries competing.
