How many singles players does Australia have?
Only a handful went, which is usual, given the Grand Slams (US Open upcoming later in the year and Wimbledon closely following the French Open) with injuries or mitigating risk ‘managing’ oneself. But the taste of an Olympics is sometimes too good to refuse, everybody wants to win Gold, even Federer, Nadal, Serena, etc at their peak always loved the Games and often did well.
Rinky Hijikata, Matty Ebden, Ajla Tomljanovic (oh dear she was terrible) all lost, Alex de Minaur (also recovering from a niggling injury) and Daria Saville pulled out to concentrate on doubles.
Feels like there is a lot of apologising and offence taking in all directions this Olympics, it’s killing the vibe. Someone needs to break the cycle and release a statement of “it’s not that deep, lighten the fk up”.
(Choreographer Maud) Le Pladec, who worked closely with the Olympics’ ceremonies artistic director Thomas Jolly to orchestrate the four-hour showcase and create the choreography, revealed that Gaga’s performance had to be filmed hours before festivities started for safety reasons; nevertheless, she still sang live.
“Unfortunately, it was the only [performance] that, for safety reasons, we had to pre-record late in the afternoon, once we knew for sure that it was going to rain — we had minute-by-minute updates, we had never watched the weather forecast so closely in our lives… We assessed that it was going to be too dangerous for performers, even with a few drops of rain. [Gaga] wanted to do it absolutely so we preferred to pre-record it rather than cancel it,” Maud says.
Ah damn, bad luck Sam Short, again
I don’t think Australia in contention the teams eventing at th equestrian. We have had a good record over the years but alas not this year.
We may still qualify individuals into the show jumping finals.
