Olympic Games (general thread)

Of course (duh moment).

I’m not sure if the ordering is a recent change to be honest - I know it wasn’t that way in 2000 but that may have been because Greece was the next host nation.

Starting with the last games, whoever hosts the next games comes out before the host nation.

Last time USA came out 3rd last, before France than Japan.

This time it will be Australia, USA, France, then in 2028 it will be whoever will host 2036, Australia, and USA.

Olympic venues left to rot

Yeah this is nothing new. Rolled out every two years.

Today, I was at Westfield Carousel in Cannington where I had the chance to see the live site for the 2024 Summer Olympics on Channel 9. Here, I watched the replay of the Matilda’s v Germany game on 9Now and sadly the Matilda’s were belted by Germany 3-0 this morning :frowning:
I hope that all Westfield shopping stores around Australia will watch all the sports live.

Here’s mine at Westfield Plenty Valley in Northeast Melbourne, before i went to the cinema. Obviously this was a few days ago before any events had started. Will definitely check it out during the games.

The security situation seems more volatile than Rio, which had a series of warnings, scares and incidents, though none major thank goodness.

Fingers crossed for all involved :crossed_fingers:

I woke up organically without an alarm to watch. Probably just ingrained in my thoughts to wake up for this momentous event,

Hearing from Paris lots of people staying away from the usual busy city during the games. Confirming Air France’s concern of low travel numbers at this time.

I’m not a big fan of opening ceremonies in general (just get on with the sport) but thought that one was worst than most.

Agreed, a bit disappointing. Beretta on Sunrise echoed this just before too. We all knew it was going to be very different and the bad weather was a let down, however they had to compensate somehow and not sure they really did. It certainly improved as the night went on and had some ‘boom’ moments, a nice finish, but yeah lacking the traditional stadium just didn’t really work. IMO.

As mentioned in the coverage thread, the concept was good, however, it wasn’t executed well - very poor weather didn’t help as well.

While we are here:

How do you rate the Opening Ceremony?
  • Best Ever!
  • Decent
  • Good, but nothing like Sydney 2000
  • Alright, but could’ve been executed better
  • Worse Ever

I thought the Celine Dion moment was special. I don’t understand though, and maybe someone can explain it to me, but why did Nadal carry the torch?
