Abbey Gelmi breaks silence on TV axing: āDonāt worry about coming backā
At the time the split (Gelmi departing Seven in 2025) seemed amicable, but Gelmi is now setting the record straight.
āMy son, Ollie, was born in November [2024], and in February [2025] I was sat down by Seven and told my contract wasnāt being renewed and ādonāt worry about coming backā.
āThat narrative isnāt something Iāve necessarily spoken about before,ā she reveals.
āNot to say anything Seven did wasnāt above board, and Iām sure they had their reasoning, but the timing of it, given my son wasnāt yet three months old, was really difficult [Gelmi shares two children ā Louis, three, and Oliver, now one ā with former AFL star Kane Lambert].
āI was still on maternity leave, and it was just a really turbulent time.
āNot long afterwards was when the harassment started. When [the departure from Seven] happened, instead of owning that narrative, I gave the impression that the time had come for a new chapter. That was me protecting myself, but also processing a level of hurt and embarrassment I felt. In retrospect, I realise it had no reflection on my attributes and what I bring to the table professionally.ā
Isnāt it illegal to sack someone if they are on maternity leave?
Only if the termination is directly related to them taking maternity leave. If the role is redundant or they are terminated for other reasons, then it is fair game.
Plus, itās a contract not being renewed.
