ROUND 11

BRAD FITTLER TO ANNOUNCE NSW ORIGIN SQUAD THIS SUNDAY EXCLUSIVELY LIVE ON NINE NEWS

The NSW State of Origin squad will be announced by coach Brad Fittler exclusively live on Nine News at 6.00pm AEST on Sunday evening, with the Queensland team to be named the following morning.

Ahead of this, candidates in the mix will be out to make a final push for selection in Round 11 of the NRL, beginning tonight with Macca’s Thursday Night Footy as the Parramatta Eels defend their perfect record at their new home ground, Bankwest Stadium, against the struggling Penrith Panthers.

Eels winger Blake Ferguson will be hoping for another impressive showing after a great start to the year, and their recent re-signing, Clinton Gutherson, will look to show the doubters why he is worth the big dollars.

The Panthers are in damage control and embattled halfback Nathan Cleary is under intense scrutiny with his spot in the Blues in danger. Penrith have made sweeping changes, with Josh Mansour and Reagan Campbell-Gillard slated to return.

In a can’t-miss duel on VB Friday Night Footy , the Knights will try to extend their winning streak to five against the Sydney Roosters. Newcastle have looked a different team in recent weeks, thanks to halfback Mitchell Pearce lifting his intensity and star fullback Kalyn Ponga at his scintillating best.

After leading the competition for several weeks, the Roosters were brought down to Earth against a fired-up Broncos last week, and must play at a high level to beat the in-form Knights at home. Captain Boyd Cordner returns from concussion, along with winger Daniel Tupou, following a neck injury scare.

Chemist Warehouse Sunday Footy is a battle between the Dragons and Sharks, with both sides desperate for a win to creep back into the top eight. Origin incumbents Tyson Frizell and Ben Hunt will lead the Dragons in a final push to cement spots for NSW and Queensland respectively.

For the Sharks, Josh Dugan may again prove to be an X factor, and they’ll need him to produce the goods to grind out a win. Halfback Chad Townsend had a relatively quiet game against Manly in Round 10, following a strong start to the season, and will want to make amends in this local derby.

Mat Thompson is calling Origin in Perth.

Oh wow. That is going to be uncomfortable. I have never heard an Origin match called by someone other than Ray Warren.

It will be Mat Thompson’s first ever Origin call. It’s bound to happen sooner or later.

Mat Thompson has called a Rugby League game in Perth (Trans tasman test in October 2016.) I think he will do better with Origin call at Optus stadium.
When was last time ray warren called a Rugby League match in Perth,

A long long time ago if ever, as any Perth NRL games are usually covered by FOX.

I think it will be great to hear Mat call Origin, and a well deserved one too.

How do you know this? it is going to be a big shock to everybody.

Not to me. And to be honest, I don’t think too many people will be shocked.

Looking forward to someone else calling it (if it’s true).

It’ll probably be the first time since 1990 (when of course, Ten had the rights to State of Origin) that Ray Warren hasn’t called a State of Origin match?

Even though we should start getting used to State of Origin matches which aren’t commentated by Ray Warren, I think that will still be a massive shock for many…

Well I guess (as usual) will have to suffer the Nine coverage with their endless commercials and Harvey Norman replay nonsense. It is a pity Fox don’t have the rights.

3 out of the 4 games this round are on Nine (shared with Fox Sports).

When there are so few games due to the Origin game, the Thursday game isnt necessary. Should have been 2 games on Saturday.

Nonetheless, 9 would be happy with the deal (duh! Lol).

ROUND 12

TEAMS BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY AS ORIGIN LOOMS

With the squads all set, State of Origin Game I is now less than a week away, LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on Nine next Wednesday, June 5, at 7.00pm.

A freshened NSW side with newfound confidence is out to make it two series in a row, while the tough Queenslanders will look to make a winning statement in Game I at the hostile and intimidating Suncorp Stadium.

In a shortened NRL Round 12, a number of rookies will be keen to impress with so many key players missing for Origin duty.

The action starts in Macca’s Thursday Night Footy: the Penrith Panthers defending home turf against an unpredictable Manly side. Following a rare win last week, James Maloney returns as the senior man in the Panthers halves, with Nathan Cleary preparing for Origin. Penrith are also without their injured centres, with Isaah Yeo and Brent Naden filling the gaps.

The Sea Eagles have made several adjustments to their squad. Joel Thompson takes over captaincy for the week and Corey Waddell starts at lock. Coach Des Hasler has won 13 of 19 clashes against Ivan Cleary -coached sides, giving Manly a measure of confidence heading into this one.

VB Friday Night Footy sees the Eels return to Bankwest Stadium to play Souths after losing there to the Panthers last round. After dropping four of their past five games, Eels coach Brad Arthur has made some bold changes to take on the table-topping Rabbitohs. The rangy Kane Evans will start at prop and the returning Tepi Moeroa at lock to inject some energy into their engine room.

While South Sydney are without four stars, coach Wayne Bennett will bank on his talent across the park to get the job done. Sam, George and Tom Burgess will be leading the way alongside halfback Adam Reynolds, who has been named despite a question mark after a leg injury.

On Chemist Warehouse Sunday Footy, the unpredictable Gold Coast are at home to the Cowboys, with the unchanged side who dismantled Manly last week.

In-form five-eighth Tyrone Roberts has been a sensation for the Titans, playing a part in four of their seven tries against the Sea Eagles, and he is the key again. With Jai Arrow selected for the Maroons, their pack led by Kevin Proctor will have a big job slowing down the rampaging Cowboys forwards.

The boys from Townsville will miss rep stars Michael Morgan and Josh McGuire, with John Asiata and Jake Clifford directing traffic in the halves – and no doubt told to give the fearsome Jason Taumalolo as much ball as possible if they are to prevail in what appeals as a tight contest.

He said it on his show on Macquarie Sports, he’s going over there to call the game.

Any idea what’s happened to Paul Vautin. Haven’t seen Fatty commentating on a Thursday for a few weeks now…

Is Nine’s NRL cross-promoting the CWC tonight in any way? If so any caps?

Apparently not according to 2GB. Ray Warren flying to Perth.
