NRL on Nine

And Ten had the midweek cup games, and showed the schoolboy comp. At one stage Ten was showing that Saturday replay at 6:00pm til 7:30pm irrc, but can’t remember when that was.

Ten also had the Sunday 3pm game replayed from 6pm to 7.30pm in the late 1980s. Known as NEC Big Game or State Bank (of NSW) Big Game.

They did indeed.

Also known as the Rank Arena Big Game in the mid 80s (86-87?) and also the MMI Big Game around 1990-91.

It was shown from 6:30 to 8:30 as a full match replay at one point too.

I’ll take Rex Mossop or Darrell Eastlake and Ian Maurice as commentators over the current Nine mob.

I quite like Mat Thompson.

But yeah, not keen on either Ray H or W, or Sterlo or Gus or Freddie.

I quite liked the double barrel play by play callers from back then. Something I think would be good now to add some variety. The current crop of special analysts are terrible.

Was thinking Fox would do it with Warren Smith and Andrew Voss- or if Joel Caine called with Ray Waren on Nine.

Nine first covered Origin in 1983 (Seven had the calls for the initial 3 years), Darrell Eastlake and Ian Maurice called from 1983-1987 (Bear joined 10 the next year) with initially Arthur Summons (the same little bloke on the NRL premiership trophy) then Jack Gibson calling. Eastlake would call the 1988 series solo with Jack and Mick Cronin, then Rabs joined in 1989 alongside Warren Ryan. 10 had the rights in 1990 for Origin, before 9 regained the Origin rights in 1991 when all 3 networks had a share of the league rights (10 had the NSWRL, 9 had Origin, 7 did the Tests between Australia and NZ). Eastlake’s last origin call was the 3rd game of 1993, having missed the 2nd game of that series.

David Morrow didn’t start calling for ABC TV until 1987. Before then Alan Marks called the games with first Reg Gasnier then Gary Cook (former referee, did both 1977 GF’s) in the early 80’s, before Jim Maxwell (yes the same cricket commentator) called in 1985/86, the second year with Mike Stephenson who only recently retired from Sky Sports in England. Boland who in 1986 and early in 1987 called the Brisbane League for ABC in Queensland (succeeding Peter Meares who went to Channel 7) then replaced Stephenson as the special comments man midway through 1987, before gaining the main PbP role in 1990 when Morrow went to Channel 10 for one year, joined initially by Arthur Beetson, then in 1994/95 by Peter Jackson.

As for the TV schedule for the Queensland ISC, here’s the latest updates for a 5 week span heading into R14
R10: Redcliffe vs Nthn Pride (Dolphin Stadium)
R11: Ipswich vs Norths (North Ipswich)
R12: Redcliffe vs CQ Capras (Dolphin)
R13: CQ Capras vs Townsville (Browne Park, Rockhampton)
R14: Burleigh vs Nthn Pride (Pizzey Park)

Thanks for the corrections…

I’d go also with David Morrow or Alan Marks calling the Saturday afternoon matches for into regional NSW only. And Peter Meares or Warren Boland for Queensland matches.

ROUND 8

An epic rugby league blockbuster will be fought out between the Dragons and Roosters when they meet in their annual ANZAC Day clash tomorrow, Live and FREE on Nine and 9Now.

Kick-starting a huge week of footy with four NRL games Live and Free on Nine’s Wide World of Sports, the ladder-leading Dragons will be out to show they can do more than just start a season well against a soundly recruited Roosters side in an emotion-charged ANZAC Day fixture.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Phil Gould, says: “The ANZAC Day match between the Roosters and Dragons is my favourite rugby league day of the regular season. It’s become such a wonderful event on the rugby league calendar and a chance for all of us to come together, remember and celebrate the ANZAC spirit, with the added bonus of a great game of football between these tremendous rivals.

“The Dragons have been outstanding through the first seven rounds of the competition. Their attacking game, executed brilliantly through their halves Ben Hunt and Gareth Widdop, is the best in the NRL at the moment. They are lethal from all parts of the field.

“The Roosters showed tremendous resilience in defence last week in their narrow but vital 6-0 win over the Bulldogs. Inconsistent during the early rounds, this victory could be the performance that really gets the Roosters’ season going. However, they will need to be great in defence again if they are to contain the high-flying Dragons.”

Gould’s player to watch: “Gareth Widdop. He’s the man at the moment. If he is on his game the Dragons will be very hard to beat.”

On Thursday Night Football, the Rabbitohs and Broncos will duke it out at ANZ Stadium with a need for speed on display in a speed-man showdown, with Broncos backline stars Jimmy “The Jet” Roberts and Anthony Milford up against Alex Johnston, Dane Gagai and Greg Inglis.

Adding extra incentive for the Bunnies will be Greg Inglis in his 250th NRL appearance after a welcome return to form last week against the Raiders.

The Panthers and Bulldogs will clash on Friday Night Football at Panthers Stadium in Penrith. The Bulldogs need a big performance to springboard back into contention and will have their work cut out against a classy Panthers outfit sitting third after seven rounds.

The Panthers, led well by James Maloney in the absence of Nathan Cleary, will be wary of an inconsistent Dogs side with Kieran Foran pulling the strings while Aaron Woods and David Klemmer show the way in their forward pack.

In Sunday Football, the Parramatta Eels – who are on a quest to keep winning after losing six straight to start the season – face off with Ivan Cleary’s Wests Tigers who are having a resurgent season.

A big-name battle in the halves pits the crafty Luke Brooks-Benji Marshall combo against the electric Eels duo of Mitchell Moses and Corey Norman.

These two sides met in Round 4, with the Tigers prevailing in the midst of the Eels’ horror start to the season. But after thumping Manly last week the Eels will be brimming with confidence to get two more precious competition points.

Ray Warren commentated on today’s Anzac game between the Dragons and Roosters… I think that’s the first game he’s called since Easter.

And he was appalling. He’s got no idea. Slow to call the plays. Rattled on with Gus about irrrlevant shit. Had the unfortunate experience of watching the game at a friends with no foxtel and it was infuriating.

ROUND 9

MITCHELL PEARCE LIVE ON THE FOOTY SHOW
JACKSON HASTINGS TV EXCLUSIVE

A dramatic Round 9 of NRL on Nine’s Wide World of Sports has the Broncos hosting the Bulldogs, a titanic Maloney versus Thurston duel when the Panthers meet the Cowboys in Bathurst, and the grounded Sea Eagles looking for takeoff against the Roosters.

On Thursday Night Football, Wayne Bennett’s Broncos will be planning to stamp their finals credentials on their home patch, Suncorp Stadium, against the Bulldogs.

The Broncos have faced their share of early season adversity and ground out some gritty wins, including last week against the Rabbitohs, but sit in tenth place on the ladder, well below their expectations. In a boost for the home side, hooker Andrew McCullough returns from injury.

The Bulldogs will be growling in the cauldron of Suncorp, with the proud club needing a win led by NSW Blues forwards David Klemmer and Aaron Woods.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Paul Vautin, says: “I’ll give you one reason to watch this game and that reason contains two words: Payne Haas. This 18-year-old monster from the Broncos bench came on with 20 minutes left last week and he carved it up. At 200 centimetres and around 120 kilograms he was in everything, and my word, what a player!

“The Bulldogs are averaging only 14 points per game and that won’t be enough to trouble the Broncos.”

On Friday Night Football, we “go bush” when the Panthers take their home match to Bathurst where they will face some big-name Cowboys with a point to prove.

This clash features the two premier playmakers in the competition, Panthers and Origin maestro James Maloney in a battle of wits with Cowboys superstar Johnathan Thurston.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Peter Sterling, says: “We’ve seen some wonderful NRL clashes taken to country areas this season and the trend continues this Friday night.

“Whilst the forward battle will be ferocious, I can’t wait to see two of the game’s truly influential playmakers in James Maloney and Johnathan Thurston plotting against each other. Just one of many attractions in a game that sees the injury-riddled Panthers looking to again defy the odds and a Cowboys outfit desperate to resurrect their season.”

Sunday Football sees the embattled Sea Eagles on the flight path back to the winners circle against the star-studded Roosters at their home ground, Allianz Stadium.

Sea Eagles coach Trent Barrett has stuck to his guns and left former Rooster Jackson Hastings out of his final 17 in favour of seasoned first-grader Dylan Walker, with Moses Suli taking his place in the centres.

The inconsistent Roosters and their big-name recruits Cooper Cronk and James Tedesco are yet to hit full stride, and they’ll be showing Manly no mercy.

Roosters centre and NSW Blues hopeful Latrell Mitchell has burst out of the blocks to start the season and poses a huge threat to the Sea Eagles who, despite a difficult few weeks, have a history of performing when the chips are down and are happy to be underdogs.

NRL INDIGENOUS ROUND

TIGERS VS COWBOYS AT LEICHHARDT TONIGHT
BILLY SLATER & WADE GRAHAM ON THE FOOTY SHOW

The Tigers and Benji Marshall are together again when they return to their spiritual den, Leichhardt Oval, to start NRL Indigenous round against Johnathan Thurston’s Cowboys on Nine’s Wide World of Sports tonight from 7.30pm AEST.

Under new coach Ivan Cleary, the Tigers opened the season with a roar before dropping their last three games. But with tough prop Russell Packer returning and Elijah Taylor shifted to hooker they’ll be a more formidable outfit for the Cowboys on Thursday Night Football.

Lining up for his last ever match at Leichhardt Oval, Johnathan Thurston will get a final shot at winning here after five losing attempts.

Speaking on Six Tackles with Gus, Nine rugby league expert Phil Goud said: “I like the Tigers (to win), back at home after three losses, getting a couple of troops back now. Leichhardt Oval is important. As the game wears on I think the Tigers will finish over the top of the Cowboys.

“As good as the Cowboys were last week I don’t believe they are completely back. The Cowboys got 13 penalties last week. I don’t think they will get 13 penalties at Leichhardt Oval.”

On Friday Night Football, a bitter rugby league rivalry that was born in the 1980s when both teams dominated the competition will reignite when the Bulldogs and Eels cross warpaths.

This fixture still brings out the best in both clubs, who treat it like their personal Grand Final. Both teams are desperate for a win following a slow start to the season. Rhyse Martin, who scored a try on debut last week, has been promoted to the Bulldogs starting side led by Origin forward Josh Jackson, while the Eels will bank on the energy and enthusiasm of their captain, Clint Gutherson.

Nine rugby league expert, Brad Fittler, says: “The Bulldogs were unlucky in their close loss to the Broncos last week and showed that they’re not lacking effort. I’m expecting to see the Dogs of War once again on Friday night and desperation for victory in every position.

“The Eels started very slowly last week and before they could come back it was too late, so they’ll be out to make amends. Will Smith has been named at hooker, and he poses a threat with his speed around the ruck to any tired Bulldogs forward. Expect a fiery start.”

Sunday Football takes viewers to Canberra where the Raiders face the Sharks.

The Sharks enjoy a good record at the Raiders home ground, GIO Stadium, winning their last five matches there. They will line up with Valentine Holmes at fullback and Paul Gallen returning at lock after injury, while Wade Graham and Josh Dugan remain on the sidelines.

The Sharks will rely again on Matt Moylan and Andrew Fifita who have stepped up in recent weeks in the absence of key players.

The Raiders have flown under the radar in winning four of their last five. Halves Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer have found form and will be instrumental in breaking the Sharks’ Canberra streak. Winger Jordan Rapana will take some stopping – he has scored eight tries in his last seven games against the Sharks.

Panthers prodigy Nathan Cleary returns to plot the downfall of his father, Tigers coach Ivan Cleary, on Thursday Night Football, LIVE and FREE on Nine and 9Now from 7.30pm AEST tomorrow.

Cleary will partner James Maloney in the halves for the Panthers after recovering from a knee injury when they take on another NSW Origin candidate, Luke Brooks, in front of Blues coach and Nine sideline commentator, Brad Fittler.

With Maloney taking the reins in Cleary’s absence, the Panthers have held strong despite a spate of injuries to sit second on the premiership ladder, and will draw on home crowd support at Panthers Stadium against a tough Tigers outfit.

The Tigers have been revived in 2018 under Ivan Cleary and will be up for the fight between the big cats on Thursday night. Mahe Fonua will not play after his man-of-the-match performance last week.

Nine rugby league expert, Peter Sterling, said: “Sometimes the footy gods smile upon us and that is certainly the case with the timely return of Nathan Cleary on Thursday night.

“The return of the Panthers whiz kid carries a couple of significant questions. Firstly, will his combination with James Maloney be a seamless transition? Secondly, will two games be enough to convince Blues coach Brad Fittler that he is ready to step into an Origin jersey? Luke Brooks won’t want to move out of the spotlight, with another dominant showing certain to push his own representative credentials.

“This is just one of a number of great battles across the park, with the Russell Packer versus Reagan Campbell-Gillard confrontation another headline act.”

On Friday Night Football, two NRL powerhouses in the Brisbane Broncos and Sydney Roosters will push each other to the limit at Suncorp Stadium.

Behind Queensland Origin hero Cooper Cronk, the Roosters put in their best performance of the season last week, smashing the Warriors 32-0, and are eager to keep the ball rolling after a stuttering start to the season.

The inconsistent Broncos have shown they can bounce back and grind out a close win after coming off a loss, which they have managed to do three times this season in their five wins.

Nine rugby league expert, Darren Lockyer, says: “A healthy rivalry exists between the Broncos and Roosters, born out of a Grand Final and numerous finals games played against each other in the modern era of NRL.

“The start will be crucial for the Broncos, who need to play up-tempo footy on the back of forwards Tevita Pangai Junior and Matt Lodge. Then it will be over to the instinctive and creative halves pairing of Anthony Milford and Kodi Nikorima to bring it home in front of the Broncos faithful.

“The Roosters were very good against the Warriors and brought a physicality to the fore that they were able to capitalise on with the finesse of their halves. They’ve been criticised but I feel that James Tedesco, Cooper Cronk and Luke Keary are getting to know each other and their combination is starting to bear fruit. Last week they had to wait 30 minutes to score, which shows they’re prepared to get into the grind. They’ll be up to the task and I can’t wait to see how the Broncos pack responds.”

Sunday Football takes viewers to Sydney’s Sutherland Shire where the Cronulla Sharks host the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

The Sharks have proven difficult to beat at home in 2018 with four wins from five games.

Speaking on Six Tackles with Gus, Nine rugby league expert, Phil Goud, said: “A very interesting game. Last week the Sharks weren’t outstanding by any stretch but they had an 80-minute effort in them and in the end that’s what won them the game, just sticking at it a little bit longer than the Raiders. They are just in your face the whole time.

“They are down at the Bermuda Triangle (Southern Cross Group Stadium) so you would have to think that the Sharks will rise again and have too many points in them for the Bulldogs. It will be a tough, grinding type of affair – it won’t be a game for the people that like a lot of points, it’ll be more for the rugby league purists that like to see big men belting each other and giving nothing away.

“I think that the Sharks will be a bit too quick for them out wide. If Ricky Leutele, Sosaia Feki and Valentine Holmes get a bit of ball, they’ll be too good for them.”

Beanie for Brain Cancer Round

BUY AN MHF BEANIE AT NRL MATCHES IN ROUND 12 TO SUPPORT BRAIN CANCER

Beanie for Brain Cancer Round is back for 2018 in Round 12 of the NRL from May 24 to 27, aiming to raise the bar against a disease that still has no cure and no survivors.

Beanie for Brain Cancer Round, the brainchild of the late Nine NRL Executive Producer, Matt Callander, produced an incredible display of generosity in 2017, raising $1.75 million and launching the Matt Callander Fellowship in association with the Mark Hughes Foundation.

Brain cancer kills more children in Australia than any other disease. It also kills more people under 40 than any other cancer. Statistics have not changed for the last 30 years. This needs to improve, for the sake of the many Australians diagnosed daily with this terrible disease.

In 2018, Beanie for Brain Cancer Round will be held in Matt Callander’s honour, with a fundraising target to crack the $2 million dollar mark and take the fight against brain cancer to the next level in a cause that is close to the hearts of the rugby league community.

MHF ambassador and Newcastle Knights champion, Mark Hughes, will be rallying the rugby league community to get behind the cause this week.

“It is with real sadness that we take on this Beanie for Brain Cancer campaign without my great mate and inspiration behind the whole round, Matt Callander,” Hughes said. “Unfortunately this is the reality of brain cancer. All I can do now is work side by side with his family and make sure this Beanie for Brain Cancer round is bigger and better every year in memory of Matt. I’m sure Matt would be very proud looking down on his family who are ensuring his legacy lives on.”

This year’s Beanie for Brain Cancer Round urges fans to buy an MHF Beanie at selected NRL matches, online at all NSW and Queensland Ritchie’s IGA stores, and bid on five auction items.

"There are five amazing prizes to have a look at, including two spots on our next trek in October. Our first adventure was Kokoda Coast to Coast, then we scaled Everest Base Camp last year, and this year it’s on again,” Hughes said. “Paul ‘The Chief’ Harragon and myself are excited to announce the MHF Borneo Coast to Coast for 2018.

“We’ll be riding our bikes, whitewater rafting and trekking whilst tracing our Australian soldiers’ history. Check out the auction link for the full description plus the other great prizes up for grabs.”

Supporting Beanie for Brain Cancer Round, NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said: “Losing Matt last year to this horrible disease was devastating, but his legacy in the fight to find a cure for brain cancer well and truly lives on through the brilliant work of all those involved with the Mark Hughes Foundation. I encourage all rugby league fans to grab a beanie, get to a game and show your support for all those who have been affected by brain cancer.”

All money raised during the Beanie for Brain Cancer Round goes directly to brain cancer research and patient support. MHF will strategically fund research projects jointly and in alignment with the National Brain Cancer Mission, with the aim of doubling the survival rates and improving the quality of life for patients with brain cancer in the next 10 years.

Sportsbet will donate $1000 for every try and $2000 for every try scored by a captain in Round 12 of the NRL this weekend in support of the Beanie for Brain Cancer Round.
