NRL on Nine

Nine now have a VERY large yellow sin bin flag with the offending players name in it.
Haven’t seen that before.

Who called the 4pm game on Nine today?

I notice that the on-screen clock failed to run when both of today’s matches kicked off. The clock was back to normal after around 20 seconds.

Ray Warren.

Too big but I like the idea with the player’s name. Usually it’s just a bit of yellow or red ie

ROUND 5

Nine’s Wide World of Sports lights up screens with three high-pressure NRL games in round five: Raiders vs Bulldogs tonight, Dragons vs Rabbitohs on Friday night, and Eels vs Panthers on Sunday, Live and Free on Nine and 9Now.

Tonight on Thursday Night Football, the Raiders host the Bulldogs at GIO Stadium in Canberra. Ricky Stuart’s Raiders have had a tough start to their 2018 campaign; they are winless and desperate to prove they can be competitive in front of their home crowd as they try to avoid their worst start to a season since 1982.

The Bulldogs are boosted by the inclusion of mercurial fullback Moses Mbye and will be wary of a fired-up Raiders team ready to wreak havoc. New coach Dean Pay has released the shackles on the Bulldogs attack, which continues to develop after two wins and two losses to start the year.

Friday Night Football is the clash between the two most successful clubs in the history of the game, the high-flying Dragons squaring off with the Rabbitohs at the traditional home of the famous Red V – Jubilee Oval, Kogarah.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Phil Gould, says: “It’s always great to be at the suburban grounds and there aren’t many better than when the Dragons play at Kogarah. I have enjoyed the simplicity in the style of play the Dragons have employed in the opening four weeks and I think that has gone a long way to their undefeated start to the season.

“The Rabbitohs will be up for a real arm wrestle. They will be without the suspended Sam Burgess but Adam Reynolds returns and he could inject their attack weapons into the game: Dane Gagai, Greg Inglis, Alex Johnston, and Reynolds’ instinctive halves partner, Cody Walker. In the hype of the first month of the season a lot of people will have forgotten that the Rabbitohs were victorious over the Dragons in the pre-season Charity Shield and will be confident they can upset them at home.”

On Sunday Football, the Parramatta Eels are out to pick themselves up off the canvas in the Western Sydney derby against the Panthers at ANZ Stadium.

After being tipped as one of the premiership favourites the Eels are yet to win this season and will need no extra motivation when they look to reverse their round one loss to the Panthers.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Brad Fittler, says: “The Eels just need to grind out a win but it will come down to desire. It looks like they’re not working together on the field and this must be turned around or their season will start to slip away. They’re missing the energy that injured stars Bevan French, Clint Gutherson and Jarryd Hayne bring but they still have players at their disposal that other teams would love.

“James Maloney was superb in the absence of Nathan Cleary for the Panthers last week and he will be their key man again. Up front in the forwards, the aggression that James Fisher-Harris has brought to the Panthers has been invaluable, and this week he shifts to lock with Trent Merrin starting at prop. I’m expecting a gritty contest with a lot of points to be scored.”

The Round 7 match between Brisbane and Melbourne next Friday week (April 20) will be the second Storm match to be shown live on main channel in Victoria. Good timing too because it is up against the AFL clash between Sydney and Adelaide. Nine will be hoping to lure viewers who are not interested in watching an AFL game involving two non-Victorian teams.

ROUND 6:

It’s a sizzling round of NRL on Nine’s Wide World of Sports this week with the bitter rivalry between the Roosters and Rabbitohs, the Sharks circling the unbeaten Dragons, and the surprise-packet Tigers playing the Sea Eagles – all Live and Free on Nine and 9Now.

The star-studded Roosters line up against the Rabbitohs on Thursday Night Football at Allianz Stadium to continue their legendary hostility. The Roosters are getting into their groove, with off-season signings Cooper Cronk and James Tedesco starting to find form alongside their new teammates Luke Keary and Boyd Cordner.

The Rabbitohs bring confidence into this fixture after almost pulling off an upset win against the Dragons last week without Sam Burgess, who will be absent again through suspension. The 2017 State of Origin player of the series, Dane Gagai, shifts closer to the action at centre with Richie Kennar returning from injury on the wing.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Peter Sterling, says: “The feud continues between these arch rivals and foundation clubs, the perfect local derby grudge match to kick off round six. The tricolours bounced back last week in a highly impressive victory over Cronulla, whilst Souths pushed the unbeaten Dragons to the brink.

“So confident is Russell Crowe of the Rabbitohs’ success this week that he auctioned off all his valuables to make room for the Ron Coote Cup.”

Friday Night Football is another famous local derby between the Dragons and Sharks, with the Sharks out to make amends for blowing a halftime lead in their round two meeting.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Brad Fittler, says: “The Dragons keep finding ways to win but just scraped home against the Rabbitohs. Euan Aitken has been impressive but he is still developing and will have a serious centre battle on his hands, with former Dragon and NSW Blues and Kangaroos incumbent Josh Dugan out to remind his old club and his young challenger of his representative status.

“The Sharks have been inconsistent this year and haven’t been able to settle on players in key positions. This week Matt Moylan will line up at fullback with Trent Hodkinson keeping his spot in the halves. This will be a great game. The Sharks know how to get down in the trenches and get the opposition out of their comfort zone. They led the Dragons 14-4 and lost their round two clash so they’ll be keen for some retribution.”

On Sunday Football, the Manly Sea Eagles host the turnaround story of the season when the Wests Tigers travel to Lottoland.

The Tigers have proved the doubters wrong, with a new-found grit and determination under new coach Ivan Cleary that has seen them defeat the defending premiers, the Melbourne Storm, twice in the opening five rounds.

The Sea Eagles are yet to lose at home this season and looking to swoop when fullback sensation Tom Trbojevic returns from an ankle injury.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Paul Vautin, says: “The Tigers have been the surprise team of the season, winning four of five. Can someone tell Benji Marshall he is not still 25 years old? He has turned the clock back with his magnificent form which has been great to watch.

“The Tigers have only beaten Manly once in their nine visits to Lottoland. With Tom Trbojevic back I think the Sea Eagles can just win in a close one.”

ROUND 7

Three feisty fixtures in NRL Round 7 on Nine’s Wide World of Sports will have the Bulldogs barking at the Roosters, a Queensland-flavoured clash between the Broncos and Storm, and James Maloney’s Panthers plotting to defeat the Sharks.

On Thursday Night Football, the Bulldogs are out to make a statement against their more fancied opponents by honouring Josh Morris with a win in his 250th NRL game.

The Dogs face a frustrated Roosters side with a forward pack fired up after an upset loss to the Rabbitohs, eager to lay a platform for Cooper Cronk and James Tedesco to use their attacking abilities.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Phil Gould, says: “The Doggies were very good against the Cowboys last week, a rapid turnaround from their loss to the Raiders. They look to be adapting to the direct style of Kieran Foran, while their edge forwards Josh Jackson and Raymond Faitala-Mariner are proving very difficult for the opposition to handle.

“The Roosters were so bad last week that there must be a bounce-back factor. Latrell Mitchell is having a great season, and if Cooper Cronk and Luke Keary can adapt to a run-first approach they can turn it around. But with the unpredictable nature of this year’s competition I can only go off last week’s results, so I’m tipping the Bulldogs.”

On Friday Night Football, two powerhouses in the Broncos and Storm face off in a battle with a distinct Queensland flavour at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Darren Lockyer, says: “These two teams enjoy a healthy rivalry that stems from knowing each other very well. It starts in the coaching ranks with Craig Bellamy being a former assistant to Wayne Bennett, and spills onto the playing field with the bulk of these sides playing Origin for Queensland together, so it’s very similar to a local derby.

“The Broncos need Tevita Pangai Jr to generate good metres and quick play the balls for Anthony Milford and Jack Bird to expose their strength, which is running the football.”

Sunday Football will be a shootout between James Maloney and the Cronulla Sharks when the Penrith Panthers travel to Southern Cross Group Stadium in the Sutherland Shire.

The Sharks’ 2016 premiership-winning playmaker is in a purple patch of form at his new club and will be out to remind them of what they lost, alongside his Panthers teammates who have been defeated only once this season.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Brad Fittler, says: “The Panthers will enter the Bermuda Triangle of home grounds and have to expect the unexpected at a venue where the form of opposition players seems to go missing at times.

“The Sharkies have shifted Josh Dugan to fullback and Matt Moylan into five-eighth, but they’ve yet to find their groove in 2018 and need a big win to get their season going. I’m looking forward to Chad Townsend going up against his old halves partner Maloney and Penrith junior Matt Moylan planning to give his own message to his former club.”

Yes, let’s hope so… I liked his unique football commentary of the State Of Origin in the 1980s on Nine (Ray Warren was at TEN at the time).

It’s hard to believe that rugby league overage was split in the 1980s: regular season on Ten and ABC, and State of Origin on Nine.

There were FOUR stations were covering rugby league games in the same year (1981-82 I think.

  • ABC was live into regional NSW only with the 3pm Saturday game, early evening highlights only for Sydney viewers. Commentators were David Morrow and Warren Boland.
  • TEN had the same game, but was a late night replay only with Ray Warren as commentator.
  • Seven did a 3pm Sunday “match of the day” as a replay only at 6.30 with Rex Mossop as commentator. Known as “Sevens Big League” and used the “Theme from Shaft” music.
  • Nine covered State Of Origin ONLY. It was live with Darrell Eastlake and Ian Maurice as commentators.
