NRL on Nine

…they already play in NZ?

Presume he means Origin.

Already suggestions there will be a doubleheader next year in NZ, featuring the Warriors playing someone and another game featuring Australian teams.

I could see FOX airing that one; don’t think Nine would want to change the 6pm time for the news.

They’ll probably make it a 9pm kick off in NZ. But even if not, SoO would have priority over news. Easily.

I would be surprised if #Origin is played in Auckland with the kick-off time at 7:30PM. This would be a 5:30PM kickoff in Eastern states, 5PM in Adelaide/Darwin, 3:30pm in Perth.

Yeah, that will be a killer timeslot for those all important Darwin viewers.

If it was in Auckland, it’d be a 9:00 local kickoff I would guess.

ROUND 3

Bennett versus Bellamy, the return of Billy Slater and the famous Viking clap will feature in a huge weekend of rugby league on Nine when round three NRL action commences with the Storm-Broncos blockbuster on Thursday Night Football.

Nine’s Wide World of Sports will give viewers unmatched access at AAMI Park straight from the opening whistle when Wayne Bennett and Craig Bellamy, the two most successful coaches, and their star-studded rosters meet tomorrow night.

With the biggest names in the game on display this clash is a must-see as champion fullback Billy Slater rejoins Storm kingpins Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk. They are up against the Broncos’ lethal attack weapons Anthony Milford, Darius Boyd and James Roberts.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Andrew Johns, says: “This is a huge occasion for the Melbourne Storm with Billy Slater returning to the field but the Broncos will be up for the challenge.

“I think the Broncos will beat the Storm. Darius Boyd is in career-best form at the moment and the Broncos bench has been outstanding, so if they fire again the Broncos can get a win on arguably the toughest road trip in the competition – playing the Storm at home in Melbourne.”

Johns’ player to watch is Darius Boyd: “After taking over the Broncos captaincy this year Darius has really impressed me. He has taken more ownership of the team and his leadership will be crucial against the Storm with their clinical, no-nonsense approach.”

On Friday Night Football, the electrifying Eels are hoping to protect their spot at the top of the competition ladder against the Titans on the Gold Coast at CBUS Super Stadium.

The Titans will be on high alert for the Eels and their lightning fast backline that boasts Michael Jennings and Bevan French in combination with their brutal forward pack.

On Sunday Afternoon Football, Nine travels to Canberra, the home of the Viking clap, when the Raiders host the Tigers at GIO Stadium.

Both teams will be desperate to bounce back after heavy last-round losses. The Raiders were one game short of a Grand Final appearance in 2016 and are yet to show their best in 2017, while the Tigers possess the brightest young talents in the game but need them all to fire against the Green Machine.

The way it would work is if it was on a Stand alone weekend, either on a Saturday or even a Sunday. Certainly a midweek time slot wouldn’t be suitable for Australian audiences, but especially if the NRL ends up getting 3 stand alone weekends rather than one then it could be viable. It all comes down to money though rather than anything the TV executives think. Governments are stumping up massive dollars to host these games knowing the nation is captivated by the battle thinking that this game will kickstart their economies.

Ray Warren calling his first game of the weekend right now, even though its in Canberra (as we all thought he would only be calling the Sydney games this year). The fact that the Thursday and Friday night games were in Melbourne and the Gold Coast probably had something to do with him having to make the trek down the Hume.

Also, plenty of Nine signage at the ground, in place of the WIN signage that existed previously.

nb. Ray - its “put down the glasses”, not “throwaway the glasses”.

I thought he drove from his home all the way to Canberra?

He probably did… as we know he doesn’t like flying … hence my comment about making the trek down the Hume,

Nice touch from Ray Warren, just prior to the second half kick off… he extended his “best wishes” to “a colleague of mine, one of the greatest commentators the country has ever heard” being Bruce McAvaney “in Adelaide”.

##ROUND 4

The biggest local derby of all, a mean Green Machine and a team of hunted Tigers add up to an enthralling week of NRL action, with round four commencing on Thursday Night Football when the Rabbitohs meet the Roosters.

Nine’s Wide World of Sports is live and free from ANZ Stadium where a spiteful encounter promises to play out between two in-form teams whose rivalry dates back to 1908.

The Roosters are unbeaten in 2017 and playing with a lethal lineup led by halfback Mitchell Pearce, exciting youngster Latrell Mitchell and former premiership-winning Rabbitoh, Luke Keary.

The Rabbitohs will be ready for a bruising match-up to earn bragging rights in this famous local derby. Their creative halves, Adam Reynolds and Cody Walker, will keep the Roosters on high alert.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Phil Gould, says: “The city derby between the Roosters and Rabbitohs is one of the genuine local derby confrontations on the NRL calendar every year.

“Forget about which team might be favourite when these two clash. The rivalry is always intense and the players genuinely feel this in the build-up to the match. Anything could happen.”

Gould’s player to watch is Luke Keary: “All eyes will be on new Roosters five-eighth Luke Keary. He has been outstanding in the first three rounds and now takes on his former club. Expect the Rabbitohs to be testing him out at every opportunity.”

On Friday Night Football, the Broncos will enjoy the home ground advantage at Suncorp Stadium when they host a Raiders team brimming with confidence after belting the Tigers last week.

The Broncos have a big job containing gigantic Canberra forwards Junior Paulo, Shannon Boyd, Josh Papalii and former Bronco Dave Taylor. The Raiders have been touted as one of the premiership favourites and Friday Night Football will provide a good indication of where their 2017 chances lie.

On Sunday Afternoon Football, Nine travels to Leichhardt Oval, traditional home of the Tigers who are out to turn around a week of turmoil in front of their Balmain faithful.

The Tigers will be looking to welcome their interim head coach, Andrew Webster, with a win, but face a tough test against the Melbourne Storm, who now have their three most influential players – Billy Slater, Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk – on the park after a long injury lay-off for Slater.

###PHIL GOULD SIGNS EXCLUSIVE DEAL WITH NINE

Nine today announced the signing of a new deal with Phil “Gus” Gould to provide exclusive content across all Wide World of Sports media platforms.

Nine’s Director of Sport, Tom Malone, said: “Gus holds a unique position in rugby league, having played, coached, administered and commentated – all at the highest levels. He is one of the most respected voices in the game and he sits at the heart of what we strive for every day – giving our audience the best seat in the house, through the eyes of legends.

“This new deal represents the future for Nine and Wide World of Sports, making great content and distributing it across all platforms. That’s what Gus will be doing through TV, digital, social media, podcasts and vodcasts.”

Nine’s Head of Sport Digital, Patrick Effeney, hailed the new deal, saying: “Rugby league fans will now have a one-stop shop for Gus. The WWOS website will carry Gus’s columns exclusively at least three times a week, along with his podcasts and vodcasts. Our audience wants to see, read and hear from authentic experts. They don’t get any more authentic or expert than Gus Gould.”

Nine’s Head of NRL, Ben Clark, said: “It’s business as usual for TV, with Gus central to our broadcasts across the NRL season, and of course the big ones – State of Origin and the Grand Final, which viewers can only see exclusively live and free on Nine.”

Phil Gould said: “I am absolutely thrilled with this new opportunity to expand my role with Channel Nine and interact with the real fans of rugby league through our various media platforms.

“The extended service Channel Nine will be providing to lovers of rugby league is very exciting indeed. I feel honoured and grateful to be part of such a wonderful team here at Channel Nine.”

Gould’s first exclusive column will appear this Sunday on wwos.nine.com.au.

Rugby league fans can also find Gould’s views on the six biggest rugby league issues of the week throughout the entire 2017 NRL season on Six Tackles with Gus.

Will this mean the end of Phil’s column in The Sun-Herald in NSW every Sunday during the NRL season?

Yes , he has quit Fairfax.

Ever since Nine has done all of their games live, how many times they’ve had to delay the news for golden point?

Not many.

Also, Ray Warren isn’t commentating today, and it’s being played in Sydney.

Whos in the commentary?

Today Mat Thiompson was the main caller.

Phil Gould did “expert” comments.

I only saw the last 5 mins or so, so not sure who else was involved.
