NRL on Nine

Have they not suffered enough?

Iā€™d rather poke my eyes out with a sharp stick than listen to the Sydney-centric commentary team say itā€™s ā€œthe greatest grand final come back of all timeā€ one more timeā€¦

I think poking your eyes out is still arguably more pleasant than MKR :stuck_out_tongue:

Yep this (among other factors including influential mainstay CEOs in Demetriou and McLachlan depsite the mixed opinions on them), thereā€™s a good YT clip from a couple of years back with Nineā€™s TJ interviewing AD (via zoom COVID Sun Footy Show) about everything that went down getting Meatloaf back in 2011 including Gudinskiā€™s significant role, fascinating insight and some info that wasnā€™t known until this. Although in retrospect, that year a laughable fail, best remembered now for cracking jokes, AD joked he couldā€™ve gone out there and sounded better LOL.

[deleted, I thought this was referring to Patty Mills, but see post further below, it was Scottie Pippen - didnā€™t take a lot of notice of it live, apologies!]

I donā€™t know him well but I donā€™t think this was Patty Mills. Pretty sure this guy was American?

Oh! Looking back at the WWOS highlights online, it was Scottie Pippen, old Chicago Bulls player from the 90s. Not sure why he was on Nine (with an NBL shirt no less - he was here to launch their season), except it looked like he was talking about how it felt to three-peat something (as he indeed did with one M. Jordan - twice).

He did some hype package earlier in the coverage.

Yeah, I saw the hype thing just thenā€¦ for some reason I thought heā€™d picked up an accent from his time over there but he hasnā€™t, so it was confused identity - fair!

Did we miss rhe half time entertainment in Channel 9ā€™s broadcast? Donā€™t recall seeing Choirboys perform.

NBL promoting

It is interesting that the NRL would allow a rival sports league to promote its competition at half time during its Grand Final telecast. I know Pippen was on the AFL Grand Final broadcast too, but at least that was a few hours before the actual game. Nine could have used that half time slot for analysis of the actual game.

They would have been paid to.

I donā€™t think the NBL is really a rival as such, itā€™s got a much smaller profile in Australia than the NRL has.

Interesting he appeared on both Sevenā€™s AFL GF day coverage and Nineā€™s NRL GF, was it a publicity push from NBL/NBA rather than the other two codes coincidentally requesting him because he happened to be available?
