Yes, for most of the 80s both the ABC and a commercial station broadcasted the Sydney rugby league Grand Final live. In most NSW regionals whereby there were only 2 TV stations, your choice was usually the Grand Final…. or the Grand Final!

Why was BTQ7 covering the league in 1987? I thought TEN10 had the rights or was BTQ7 using TEN10 vision with their own commentators? Wally Lewis listed. I didn’t know he working in TV (if only for this telecast) until TVQ0 the following year?

Brisbane hadn’t entered the competition at this stage - I do not know what sort of coverage the NSW competition got in Queensland outside of the ABC

I don’t think there was a “national” rights arrangement in place at the time.
As I know in the early 80s TV-0 had the QLD Origin rights, and Nine had the NSW rights. Both stations had their own commentators. I think that style of arrangement filtered through to the NSWRL comp as well.

The NRL never fail to embarrass themselves with cringeworthy prematch entertainment. Just ridiculous.

I think it’s fine, appropriate this year given Tina’s passing and the impact she had on how sport gets promoted in Australia.

I get why they did it but it just looks like a cheap cover band. They need something world class. Even KISS were better yeserday during the day.
The night time setting lends itself to something big but only Peter V’landys hubris gets in the way of excellence. As a chairman he has too much say. He’s not the CEO ffs. Sub par as usual from the NRL.

I’ve not seen the Tina Turner musical, but this woman singing at the NRL sounds nothing like her and has none of her mannerisms.
Would’ve been better to play Tina’s performance from years ago on the big screen.

Why is Patty Mills doing a prematch hype package. He’s an Australian NBA star. Not really known for an affiliation with the Rugby League.

The NRL hasnt really had decent prematch entertainment since Tina in 1993, it’s either been an absolute flop or suffered some kind of failure. Hard to pin it on V’landys
The success of the AFLs prematch has been in no small part down to Michael Gudinski
