Nine games of footy for free on Nine

Wide World of Sports will up the ante for footy fans on the run to the finals with nine games on Nine live and free every week, beginning tonight on the 9Network and 9Now from 5.30pm.

  • NRL AND NRLW ALL IN HD FROM ROUND 23
  • MEN’S AND WOMEN’S THURSDAY NIGHT DOUBLE-HEADER
  • PANTHERS V STORM FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTY BLOCKBUSTER
  • SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTY FROM 7.00PM: LATRELL MITCHELL’S RABBITOHS V NICHO HYNES’ SHARKS

Plus, this week Saturday Night Footy joins the lineup for the rest of the regular NRL season, with superstars Latrell Mitchell and Nicho Hynes squaring off in Rabbitohs v Sharks for a place in the finals.

A Roosters women’s and men’s double-header kicks off the round with NRLW from 5.30pm tonight on 9GemHD, featuring Millie Boyle, Isabelle Kelly and Jess Sergis lining up for the Tricolours against the Dragons.

Straight after at 7.30pm on Channel 9HD, it’s the battle of the birds in Roosters v Sea Eagles where State of Origin captains James Tedesco and Daly Cherry-Evans will vie for a crucial win to hang onto any hopes of a finals appearance this season.

Friday Night Footy is the centrepiece of the round when the back-to-back Panthers premiers host the ever-ominous Melbourne Storm.

Hype of a premiership three-peat continues to build with the silky Panthers playmaker Nathan Cleary pulling the strings in attack behind the best defence in the league. However, the Storm know how to win big games – and never write off the talents of Cameron Munster and Harry Grant.

Nine’s Saturday NRLW double-header from 12.30pm features a Queensland derby between the Cowboys and Broncos, with two of the greatest halfbacks to play the game, Johnathan Thurston and Andrew Johns, in commentary, followed by Sharks v Titans.

Former Wide World of Sports host, Ken Sutcliffe, made a special appearance tonight - during the half time break. It was a very brief chat with Brad Fittler.

Saw that and noted the introduction and caption “Channel 9 Royalty”!

I think this must be his first appearance on television in any capacity for over two years - which was when he gave his tributes to Brian Henderson when he passed away in August 2021.

Good to see he’s still going well, with his 76th birthday looming in November.

Just realised he’s younger than Peter Hitchener! Oh well, everyone has different priorities in life.

Both are also older than Bruce Paige (former Nine News Queensland and Nine Gold Coast News presenter), who was born in November 1948.

Also, for what it’s worth, Brian Naylor was eight months older than Brian Henderson (their birthdays were in January and September 1931, respectively).

Finals fate on the line: Thursday night on Nine

  • COWBOYS V SHARKS TONIGHT
  • NINE GAMES OF FOOTY FOR FREE

  • ON MAIN CHANNEL IN MELBOURNE

The closest season in memory will culminate in a frenzy for a ticket to the top eight and a place in the finals across an epic weekend of NRL and NRLW on Channel 9HD and 9Now.

In Thursday Night Footy, Nicho Hynes and the fifth-placed Sharks swim into the warm waters of North Queensland to meet the ninth-placed Cowboys, who cannot afford a loss on their uphill ride to a finals berth.

Five-star Cowboy Jason Taumalolo will play his 250th NRL game and he’ll back-up from gunslinging backline weapons Tom Dearden and Scott Drinkwater to get the job done.

It’s all or nothing on Friday Night Footy when the Eels and Roosters meet. Both sides are level on the ladder, just one win outside the top eight, and can end each other’s season.

Start your Saturday right with an NRLW triple-header from 11.00am before battening down the hatches for a storm from the south as Craig Bellamy’s Melbourne outfit look to gather more momentum ahead of the finals against the Dragons at 7.30pm in Saturday Night Footy.

Sunday is a rest day, but not for NRL on Nine with Andrew Johns, Billy Slater, Brad Fittler and Danika Mason dissecting the week of footy at 11.00am on the Sunday Footy Show. Straight after comes an NRLW double-header, before Sunday Arvo Footy pits the Raiders against the Bulldogs.

Knights and Sharks in steel city showdown

Knights and Sharks in steel city showdown

NRL on Nine begins with the battle of the west tonight, and ends with the match of the round when Prince Ponga and his proud Knights defend their kingdom on Sunday, on Channel 9HD and 9Now.

  • PANTHERS V EELS: BATTLE OF THE WEST TONIGHT
  • GAME OF THE ROUND: KNIGHTS V SHARKS MEN’S AND WOMEN’S FROM 1.45PM

Kalyn Ponga has taken the Knights to new heights as he dances his side into the finals in a Knights Old Boys day joust for the ages. But Nicho Hynes will be out to dethrone him when he parks the Sharks in Steel City for a sensational serving of Sunday Arvo Footy.

The girls will start the Sunday battle royale in Knights v Sharks NRLW from 1.45pm live and free, leading into the NRL coverage from 3.30pm.

Tonight, on Thursday Night Footy, the Panthers’ premiership march rolls into a bitter local derby against the Eels.

The Eels, who are out of finals contention, have won three of their last five games against the Panthers. With the bye next week, they want to go out all guns blazing in their final game of the season, while a win will take the Panthers closer to securing the 2023 minor premiership.

The Cowboys take on the supercoach Sheriff when Wayne Bennett and his Dolphins feature in an all-Queensland clash on Friday Night Footy.

Then an NRLW triple-header begins a big day of Saturday games on Nine from 11.00am, before “Reece Lightning” Walsh and the bucking Brisbane Broncos descend on Canberra for Saturday Night Footy at 7.00pm against Ricky Stuart’s Raiders.

Don’t Nine announce the commentary teams for each game anymore? It’s been a little while since I’ve seen that level of detail in these releases.

Much more restrained Brisbane promo - unlike their news promos!

Brisbane don’t need as much encouragement to watch I suppose. Sydney and Brisbane actually get the same vision in their promos but different v/o.

Brisbane isn’t also a one-team town anymore either (I mean Gold Coast exists of course but now we have the Dolphins too).

Going purely by the screencaps, the Melbourne one feels like something you’d see on a regional sports network in the US or something. Plus the return of Ryan Papenhuyzen is very marketable down there; it’s been more than a year after all.
