NRL on Nine round 5: East meets West and some Munster-Mitchell magic on Friday Night Footy

OVER 140 GAMES AVAILABLE FREE IN 2023

In the closest start to an NRL season in years, the round begins on Thursday Night Footy with a classic East v West battle between the Roosters and the Eels.

Both teams are chasing back-to-back wins. James Tedesco’s Roosters want to stamp more authority on their new home ground, Allianz Stadium, while Mitch Moses, whose golden point field goal sunk the premiers last week, will be plotting to take down the Tricolours in tandem with Clint Gutherson.

Rugby league fans are in for a magic show on Friday Night Footy when two attacking wizards, the Storm’s Cameron Munster and Rabbitohs star Latrell Mitchell, produce their book of tricks.

The Storm have won seven of their last eight games against the Rabbitohs, but the Bunnies are on the hunt for back-to-back wins against the Storm for the first time in club history.

Sunday Arvo Footy shines this week with Dally M Medallist Nicho Hynes planning a feeding frenzy when his Sharks meet the Warriors.

The Warriors have started the season solidly with three wins, but face a tough task against the well-drilled Sharks at their home, a ground that has been dubbed the Bermuda Triangle for away teams by commentators.

Nine’s Wide World of Sports has exclusive access to the ground for its commentary team this week, one of more than 140 rugby league games it is bringing viewers for free in 2023.

Brenton Speed has joined the WWOS team, James Bracey gave a brief intro to him and said he’d be heard across WWOS quite a lot.

He’s a very versatile play by play caller so he’ll be more than handy for the Olympics and other sports on Nine.

Agree, and he’d be a great back up NRL caller to both Mat Thompson and Peter Psaltis too.

So confirmed he has left Fox or is he doing both Nine and Fox

Believe he left Fox Sports back in February

That would be false as he still was commentating AFL and NRL this season for Fox

When?

THIS WEEK IN NRL ON NINE: ROUND 7

WAYNE BENNETT V THE BUNNIES
THE BATTLE OF BROOKVALE
EELS V BULLDOGS

STREAM NRL FOR FREE ON 9NOW

The Phins are out for more wins when supercoach Wayne Bennett leads them into battle against the Bunnies on Thursday Night Footy, starting a big week of NRL on Nine, available to stream for free on 9Now and watch on Channel 9HD.

Bennett will be drawing on his knowledge of his former club to upset the Rabbitohs and keep the Dolphins’ amazing season going.

The Ferrari of fullbacks, Latrell Mitchell, will meet “The Hammer”, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, in an exhilarating match-up behind two packs of forwards primed for a ferocious battle.

Friday Night Footy reignites the deep-seated rivalry between the Manly Sea Eagles and Melbourne Storm. Vivid memories of the infamous 2011 Battle of Brookvale come to the fore every time these teams meet at Manly’s home ground, and Manly need a big scalp after being demolished by the Panthers last week.

Daly Cherry-Evans and Tom Trbojevic hold the keys to victory for the Sea Eagles, who will have their hands full containing the brilliance of Cameron Munster, Harry Grant and Jahrome Hughes.

The Eels and Bulldogs square off in a Sunday Arvo Footy clash between elite playmakers Mitch Moses and Matt Burton, with both sides yet to drop into their winning groove this season.

The Bulldogs are beefed up by the return of bruising forwards Viliame Kikau and Tevita Pangai Junior while the Eels get their Origin forward Junior Paulo back on deck.

Wide World of Sports has exclusive access to Commbank Stadium for its Sunday Arvo Footy commentary team this week, one of more than 140 rugby league games it is bringing viewers for free in 2023.

“We are coming to you live from Suncorp”…

Yeah but James wasn’t. It’s not a lie I know but it’s dodgy.

Sadly, it’s a common thing. Fair enough during COVID, now it’s cheap and tacky. They’re not the only ones to do it, but none of them should be doing it.

Hosting coverage from a studio isn’t exactly a new thing though, and it is fairly common for sports coverage around the world. The game itself was called from the ground, so there is no issue there.

Not all games are though, as Mat Thompson did the Newcastle v Canberra game from Sydney (as he said “up there in Newcastle” during the call).
