ROUND 14:

A battle of wits between two super coaches headlines the Round 14 NRL action on Nine’s Wide World of Sports with the mouth-watering Sunday afternoon match-up between the Storm and Broncos, LIVE and FREE on Nine.

But first, viewers will hop into Friday Night Football tonight when the in-form Rabbitohs travel to the Gold Coast to take on the Titans. The Rabbitohs are now serious premiership contenders after a run of impressive victories with and without their star players in recent weeks.

Ryan Girdler from The Footy Show said: “An interesting match-up that is levelled out with the Rabbitohs having question marks over their four Origin representatives and whether they will play. They proved last week that they have supreme depth this season, with their younger and less experienced crop impressing many in a gutsy win against the Sharks.

“The Titans depend heavily on the creativity of Ash Taylor with his kicking, passing and running game. They have been patchy at best in 2018 with their defence coming under scrutiny at different stages. They go into this one as outsiders but will be up for a fight on home turf against the Bunnies.”

Sunday Football pits the Melbourne Storm with a fresh Cameron Smith lining up after unusually not having to back up from Origin against the Broncos. Injured Storm fullback Billy Slater joins the pre-game panel ahead of a big afternoon of footy on the Wide World of Sports.

Nine rugby league expert, Darren Lockyer, said: “For the Broncos, having Josh McGuire back is a huge bonus. The Broncos have some good young and dynamic forwards but it’s McGuire and his leadership that holds their forward pack together. I think the confidence Andrew McCullough will get off the back of Origin will help them as well, and he will be excited for a battle with the best dummy half in the game, Cameron Smith.

“Playing the Storm at home in Melbourne is a tough proposition for any team let alone one with a rested Cameron Smith. They were too good for the Broncos in round seven but coach Craig Bellamy won’t be allowing for any complacency in their disciplined culture when he takes on his former teacher, Wayne Bennett.”

PODCAST – SIX TACKLES WITH GUS

James Bracey discusses the biggest rugby league issues of the week with NRL legend and expert commentator Phil Gould on Six Tackles with Gus.

Looks like Nine have given up on their commitment of airing Storm games on the main channel in Melbourne… that didn’t last long.

Opportunity missed, given there is no AFL on FTA in Victoria this Sunday (the two matches during the day will be on Fox Footy).

Well I guess at least Nine has had a go, which is probably more than can be said for Seven and their coverage of the Sydney and QLD AFL teams on the main channel there.

It will be the first time a rugby league test featuring two Pacific nations is shown on Nine. Last year it was on Fox Sports.
This is the second part of Pacific test doubleheader at Sydney’s Campbelltown Stadium. Papua New Guinea plays Fiji at 4pm AEST, which will be shown exclusively live on Fox League.

I’m actually going to tip Nine will still air Melbourne Storm NRL games on main channel in Melbourne. It’s just that today’s game wasn’t in prime time perhaps? I could be wrong.

And just on today, Ch 9 in Melbourne were just running a 1960s movie.

Is that on the main channel, as opposed to 9GEM?

If so, good on Nine!

Also great to see that they are televising the women’s State Of Origin game at 7:30 on Friday 22nd as well.

its a part of the new NRL TV deal starting this year, where we see Pacific Nation Tests games.

The Sunday NRL footy show airs on 9Gem in Victoria as a lead in to the live NRL game. I guess they did not want to mess with that

I’m thinking Nine didn’t want to risk their 6pm News being delayed in Melbourne if the Storm game ran overtime. That would have been disasterous for ratings with regular viewers seeing Rugby League and switching straight to Seven.

Ah, yep, that’ll definitely be it. Although, Seven News is the bulletin that usually dominates Sundays with AFL lead-in (400k+, including last week)

Today’s Storm-Broncos clash did finish late at around 6.02pm AEST.

Re: Tonga v Samoa

Yes it will be on main channel in Sydney and Brisbane.

ROUND 15

The Bunnies have hopped from victory to victory in 2018 and are out to skip straight past the Eels in Thursday Night Football, the first of three big games in Round 15 NRL on Nine.

Rabbitohs Origin representatives Greg Inglis, Damien Cook, Dane Gagai and Angus Crichton will turn out in a big Thursday night of LIVE and FREE league action, followed by The Footy Show straight from ANZ Stadium.

Nine rugby league expert, Peter Sterling, said: “The Eels will look to go back-to-back for just the second time this season after a confidence-building win over the Cowboys last weekend. It shapes as a tough assignment against a Rabbitohs outfit that have won six in a row and welcome back their four Origin stars.

“The return of Manu Ma’u for the Eels helps their cause, but if the blue and gold are to prevail they’ll need to close down Souths’ huge forward pack led by Sam Burgess and their slick backline with Adam Reynolds and Cody Walker steering the ship. Don’t rule out an upset by the Eels.”

A galaxy of rep stars will feature in Friday Night Football when the Roosters plan an aggressive welcoming party for the joint table-topping Panthers at their home chook pen, Allianz Stadium.

Eagerly casting his expert eye over both sides will be Nine rugby league expert and NSW Origin coach, Brad Fittler, who said: “What a game this will be, two teams chock-full of superstars and sitting in the top eight.

“The Panthers halves combination of James Maloney and Nathan Cleary has really impressed me this season with their yin and yang chemistry and they’ll be crucial once again when they go up against the very capable Roosters halves, Cooper Cronk and Luke Keary.

“While there’s no lack of firepower in both backlines with players such as James Tedesco, Latrell Mitchell and Tyrone Peachey, it’ll be in the forwards where this one is decided. The front-row battle between Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Dylan Napa will create fireworks and whoever can capitalise quickest once it calms down will win. With my heart in both camps I’m sitting on the fence for this one.”

On Sunday Football, the Tigers host the Raiders at Campbelltown Stadium. Sharks co-captain Paul Gallen joins the pre-game panel ahead of a big afternoon of footy on Wide World of Sports.

Speaking on Six Tackles with Gus, Nine rugby league expert, Phil Gould, said: “Josh Hodgson is a huge ‘in’ for the Raiders. Traditionally at this time of year the top eight never ends up the top eight come September. Someone always makes a run from outside and gets into the finals. It’s a big game for both sides. It may be the Tigers or it may be the Raiders that make their run for the top eight and this game will be crucial in that.

“It’s a game that the Raiders have to win, and with Josh Hodgson back I think it might just give the Raiders the edge. I think with the Tigers, win, lose or draw, they’ve been terrific every time they’ve played and they deserve to win. I just think with Josh Hodgson the Raiders will have too many points in them if they click.”

WOMEN’S STATE OF ORIGIN ON NINE
NEW SOUTH WALES VS QUEENSLAND

LIVE FROM 7.30PM FRIDAY

A blockbuster weekend of rugby league on Nine’s Wide World of Sports will be kick-started with the first ever Holden Women’s State of Origin LIVE on Nine from North Sydney Oval on Friday at 7.30pm.

Host James Bracey will be joined by injured NSW captain Ruan Sims and former Jillaroo Allana Ferguson at this historic venue for unparalleled pre and post-game analysis, with Sims and Ferguson also keeping a close eye on the action from the sideline.

In the commentary box Mat Thompson will call all the action alongside former Jillaroo Jo Barrett and the NSW Blues’ most successful coach, Phil Gould.

This match promises to dish up every bit of intensity that the NSW versus Queensland rivalry has produced over more than 30 years, a fast, physical and skilful game on what is a historic night for women’s rugby league.

New South Wales will have Maddie Studdon navigating a path to victory for the home team, along with seasoned stars Sam Bremner and Kezie Apps. The Queenslanders will draw on the experience of Steph Hancock and the playmaking skills of Zahara Temara.

Nine’s expert commentator, Ruan Sims, said: “There are a number of great match-ups across the park, but keep an eye on the halves pairings of Ali Brigginshaw and Zahara Temara for Queensland, and Maddie Studdon and Lavina O’Mealey for NSW. The Blues will rely on current Dally M winner Simaima Taufa and former winner Kezie Apps to show the way in the forwards.

“The Queenslanders will relish the opportunity to wrestle back the title, with Brittany Breayley and Karina Brown completing a lethal spine for the Maroons.”

Nine’s Director of Sport, Tom Malone, said: “We are incredibly excited to be broadcasting the first ever Women’s State of Origin on Nine. Wide World of Sports has led the way in women’s sport through our association with the Southern Stars and the Jillaroos, and of course Super Netball.

“Along with our broadcast partners Holden and Harvey Norman, we are so proud to be part of this great initiative from the NRL – the first ever, stand-alone Women’s State of Origin. How good is that!”

I think it will rate an * in Adelaide.

Surely it will get 1,000

Is the Women’s State of Origin match a Nine exclusive or will Fox League also be showing live coverage?

Either way, it’ll be quite interesting to see what the ratings are like in Sydney & Brisbane!
