NRL Free To Air TV Rights 2023-2027 (Nine)

This is another highly speculative article probably leaked by NRL HQ to scare Nine into renewing or upping its offer.

Interesting Seven only want Origin and Friday Nights. Surely we won’t have a broken up rights deal where Thursdays and Sundays on another network. I really would think that would be a disaster. The NRL already has a dud deal that hardly rates on FTA, it would be even worse if the rights are split.

Yeah you would think it would be one package unless 10 gets 2 games a week, like those old AFL deals when 7 and 10 and 9 and 10 shared the rights.

Why? It might just be the window to demonstrate to the NRL that another broadcaster could do more for the code.

Whether they will is another story and can only been seen in time.

There’s a bit more ‘meat to the bones’ to the report compared to others though. This portion sticks out (quoting from the article BigVic linked to):

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys and NRL CEO Andrew Abdo aim to have a new free-to-air broadcast deal clinched by Christmas and would want the value of the free-to-air component to at least return to pre-Covid levels.

At that level, the NRL would be looking at a deal worth at least a combined $600m through to 2027, the same year Foxtel’s pay-television rights deal was extended to last year.

Why would it be a disaster? Plenty of sports leagues split up their rights packages in order to get more exposure and coverage.

If it’s split plus with the simulcast. If it was split and they were exclusive games it wouldn’t impact.

Having the fox simulcast dilutes the audience, impacts the networks revenue and is just plain woeful.

I wonder if Seven would be going for digital rights too? Getting to broadcast their sporting matches, whether it’s AFL or NRL, on 7plus, would be a big step in the way of the future - streaming.

9 have the BVOD for their existing package. SVOD is with fox and Kayo

I think this has come from the NRL… to kick up the bidding war. I’m sure Seven would love to have them, but not at an increased price offer.

Don’t know how B&T reached the conclusion that Seven denied the NRL rights rumours based on the statement they provided to them.

A ‘no comment’ (which is what the Seven spokesperson did) is very different to a flat out denial

Nine warning: Split the rights at your own peril

Nine Network boss Mike Sneesby says the NRL will be committing financial suicide if they split the broadcasting rights
https://www.theaustralian.com.au/subscribe/news/1/?sourceCode=TAWEB_WRE170_a_TWT&dest=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theaustralian.com.au%2Fsport%2Fnrl%2Fnine-network-boss-warns-of-the-nrl-of-perils-of-splitting-the-broadcasting-rights%2Fnews-story%2F7d97641fecef194e889c3446446d7839&memtype=anonymous&mode=premium

It has been reported previously that the commission had a clause built into their deal with Foxtel that catered for fresh talks should the game move to 17 teams.

Sneesby’s point is invalid considering the rights are already split between Nine and Foxtel

Sneesby comes across as still being a touch out of his depth and still in the Stan realm, he mentioned relying heavily on 20+ year Nine programmer Michael Healy and sales boss Michael Stephenson in regards to their TV business (Nine). Just IMO and from all his interviews/ quotes in Nine’s results the past 48 hours.

How good would it be.
7 gets Thursday night NRL and Origin. 9 gets Friday and Sunday and finals.
It’d be a great mix. And great for the game.

After three decades of poor coverage I’d personally like to see Nine lose the rights to all rugby league: Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Origin, Finals…the lot.

I love how the NFL is split across so many networks. The more networks a sport is on the more competitive it is and therefore the better coverage is for the viewer.

What would you say is poor about it? Genuine question, not a dig.

NRL has been on 9 for as long as I can remember and I don’t have Foxtel. I’d say the hosting staff could do with a refresh but otherwise I’ve found 9’s coverage to be pretty adequate?

There is still too much of an “old boys” club feel about it, with Warren, Sterling, Lewis, Vautin and Gould still around. It’s just gotten a bit stale,
