NRL Broadcast Rights (2028-?)

You are of course assuming the 20th team will be based in New Zealand. Whilst i personally agree it should be in New Zealand. Either Wellington or Christchurch, there is this rumbling about another Queensland side

Dropping any of these would also come at a cost, with early termination fees likely applying—not to mention the range of hypotheticals it would raise. For instance, if Seven were somehow to re-acquire the Australian Open, Melbourne Cup, and Olympics, would Nine then expect cricket or AFL rights in return? And would SCM even entertain such a move?

If NRL wants to reach the revenue they are seeking they need to look more broadly at what can be marketed.

We rarely see lower divisions on television of either the men’s or women’s games, then there’s the opportunity to expand the women’s competition. I think for the money they want they need to do multiple deals with different events in each. As an example NRL men’s and the women’s NRL comp could be in one, the women’s state of origin could be bundled with the NSW and QLD first grade comps, then the NRL men’s league could be separate again. I know what I have said most likely won’t happen, but V’Landys (NRL) and Dillon (AFL) are not bottomless pits of money and that chasing record deals could take it the leagues from the grassroots of these clubs and traditional fans.

Bring back Adelaide and try to make it a national game. AFL are ahead with moves towards team Tasmania

I’ve no idea if Nine would need to drop one of those if they pursued the NRL, but if they did, surely its the Melbourne Cup. The others seem far more strategically important for them.

A great idea to bundle the NRL with the NRLW together. The women’s game (regular comp and State of Origin) has been improving on FTA over the years. But with the next deal, could be even more.

Having a deal with the “reserve grades” (NSW Cup and the Qld Cup) in respective states is a good deal too. Even if just one week a game on air. Like how 9Gem airs one game a week of Rugby’s Shute Shied - Sydney’s competition.

did not think Nine was a ‘struggling company’. Another example of news corp anti - nine bias

I wonder if the shareholders will tolerate the fall in SP should nine lose out on the nrl rights altogether and have no major code for the next half decade at least? There’s a fair bit of entitlement in that statement and I don’t think it fully appreciates the animosity that has developed between the NRL & Nine over the last few years. The NRL are looking for a reason to dump them, a bid from Ten/paramount won’t just be merely treated as a stalking horse to bump up any offer from Nine, if the price is right I wouldn’t doubt them taking it.

The analysis was by investment research company Morningstar.

Even if the state games went to another bidder it could be good if it was on terrestrial TV. I think mist people here have a soft spot for terrestrial TV. If the state ganes were sold separately, it could be like in the mid 1980s where Nine had the QRL rights and 10 had the NSWRL rights and then Nine had State of Origin as well

Is there enough interest in Adelaide?

I think curiosity would be piqued after almost a 30 year absence and with the right players sourced from other clubs and a strong backer, it could have a similar opportunity to Perth

Below is some Adelaide Rams history

The Un-Australian is just trying to boost Dazn.

It’s missed the real story. They say Seven and Ten can’t afford NRL even more than Nine. So where does that leave the next AFL deal???

But then they say that Paramount global can afford. So the article and analysis is inaccurate.

Considering how well Women’s State of Origin performs and the continued growth in NRLW’s ratings, I would argue NRLW should be unbundled from the men’s comp and sold as its own package to capitalise.

But here’s the thing - they don’t need to be in the hunt to make Nine’s (or Ten’s for that matter) a little more difficult by pushing up the price.

Generating somewhat legitimate interest in FTA rights will have an impact on the price

The current AFL deal is going to be the zenith for TV rights in Australia at this rate.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that Ten can’t afford it, but they could if they were to tap their owner for additional funding - we saw this in the last round of sports rights.

Understandably… my comment was more about the article as a paragraph or two later was along the lines of ten’s cashed up parent paramount global will be making a large bid (paraphrased). Of course 10 can’t afford it on its own as free to air network but as part of global conglomerate whereby they can leverage their subscription service for the bid they can definitely bid highly.

Theres a lot of posturing going on here - the NRL wants a competitive rights market to try and drive the price up, its also possible that some are looking on whether Paramount intervenes as some kind of signal as to what their intention is with Ten as well (for instance if they don’t, perhaps they don’t figure in Paramount’s longer term plans)

I dont know if i’d bother paying to close attention to some of the stuff that gets published in the leadup to these deals - a lot of it is pretty blatant attempts at feathering ones nest while trying to shit in someone elses

And I think that unlike AFL and NRL, CA and TA can’t afford a lower reaching and rating network like 10, they really do need Seven and Nine, especially with the lead in/out and cross-promo assets that they have (breakfast, news, current affairs, reality shows, other major sports, game shows and things like papers and radio).

Australia Open and Nine has been especially successful, but I too fear NEC may have to consider not renewing, at least their exclusive negotiating window and allowing potential shock/knockout bids much like Nine stunned in 2018 from Seven or 10, if they truly go hard with this NRL deal.

In that case, I feel both bodies are too narrow minded in not dealing with 10. With Craig Tiley leaving for US Tennis Association in coming months, I hope the new CEO will have a different mindset and consider communication with 10.
